Doubt it. While the Republicans may be able to put forth a better, even an excellent candidate, it would only represent one more layer on the wedding cake of chaos that the party has become.

Can you do that? Can you change who is on the ticket at this point, legally?

Pssst -- it's a joke. According to some of the less anchored-in-reality types around here (and in the right-wing circle jerk media) everything bodes ill for Obama.

You have to be able to. Death or severe illness. There's rules in place, I just have no earthly idea what they are.

If Palin were a man, we'd all be guffawing, just as we do every time Joe Biden tickles the back of his throat with his toes. But because she's a woman - and the first ever on a Republican presidential ticket - we are reluctant to say what is painfully true.

Ummm, no.
Joe Biden says dumb things occasionally.
Sarah Palin says incoherent things constantly.

yes you can. the candidates do not have any sort of legal status as such, they are simply the people nominated for the election by the parties. the parties can do anything they want with their nomination so long as the nominee fits the requirements laid out in the constitution.

burndtdan 2008-09-26 10:22:40 AM
i'll add though, it might cause trouble getting them on the ballot, but as texas showed, that doesn't matter unless you're a third party.

NikolaiFarkoff [TotalFark] 2008-09-26 10:23:20 AM
If you can't change the VP at the last minute, well, that serves you right for running in the National League.

Thanks for clearing that up. I couldn't find a concise explanation on the web and I thought you had to register the names of candidates, so barring death or severe illness (as mentioned earlier) they HAD to be the ticket.

Scratch my last post. THAT's what I meant initially. So they would have a problem, legally, getting on the ballot (which means you can't vote for them, therefor a party really can't change their ticket this late).

/except, as you mentioned, in Texas.

HalfAsleep [TotalFark] 2008-09-26 10:28:40 AM
But there is the one small problem of most states having their ballots printed already. Even if the states have touch screen voting the absentee ballots are ready to go. You can change your VP candidate in the next few weeks, but when it comes time to vote, people may still see Palin's name.

thatvoiceguy 2008-09-26 10:30:11 AM
The VP nominee can be replaced. It's happened before.

It's also a recipe for political suicide, especially if you're already behind in the polls. McCain didn't learn from McGovern's mistake in not vetting Eagleton thoroughly, but it's too late for him to drop Palin.

Way to Mavrick yourself right into a trainwreck, Mac.

She's not stupid. She just jumped into the deep end, thinking it was six feet or so. It wasn't. It was six fathoms deep. And she's wearing lead boots.

/I seriously have boggled at the GOP sacrificing her this early.

Can't fix stupid.

I'm not a governor. I'm not a politician. I'm an office drone who spends too much time arguing about politics on the internet, and I'm fairly certain I could do a better job answering questions- ESPECIALLY if I had a month of prep from political operatives.

thatvoiceguy: McCain didn't learn from McGovern's mistake in not vetting Eagleton thoroughly, but it's too late for him to drop Palin.

In McGovern's defense, he was nominated at a very contentious convention and didn't have a lot of time for vetting VP candidates.

McCain however...

I agree that she's stupid and you could probably do better. But here's the rub: You can't answer the questions how you wish. You have to somehow answer everything positively for McCain. While keeping a straight face. And sounding intelligent.

Don't forget skilfully derailing the conversation so that you no longer have to answer the question you don't want while simultaneously answering the question you wanted them to ask.

Sarah Palin just really, really sucks at this.

Reporter: Gov. Palin: Do you really think being able to see Russia from Alaska is foreign policy experience?

Palin: Of course not, Reporter. I think that's pretty funny, actually. To be honest, I'm not the most well versed in foreign policy, so I'm honored to be learning from one of the most experienced leaders in the country, John McCain. I'm a quick study, reporter, and John McCain's lifetime of service to this country and experience with world leaders will more than make up for any experience that I lack.

Now- wouldn't that sound better?

jerry2a 2008-09-26 11:28:08 AM
Yeah...here's how she responded to a question about the bail-out:

"That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in. Where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh, it's got to be about job creation, too. Shoring up our economy, and getting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reigning in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade -- we have got to see trade as opportunity, not as, uh, competitive, um, scary thing, but one in five jobs created in the trade sector today. We've got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation."

She can't even get the talking points right. What an incoherent jumble of thoughts - and to make it worse she was reading from cue cards and STILL botched it. Any somewhat intelligent person could have answered that question even without the weeks and weeks of preparation she's had on economic issues. She's not bright - she's clever and cunning...there's a difference.

That's probably true. Her responses to questions suggest it and if you want to go way back, her educational record suggests she's maybe not the brightest bulb. She's just been a clever politician in Alaska.

The question was: "Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? Allow them to spend more, and put more money into the economy, instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?"

Watch the Couric interview...it's even more painful to see and hear. It's really astonishing that somebody that's been in politics for more than a few years can't even effectively BS their way through an interview like this. You see the panic as she's desperately trying to remember what she's supposed to say.

am guilty of charging her early critics, supporting only a certain kind of woman.

Some of the passionately feminist critics of Palin who attacked her personally deserved some of the backlash they received.
