So they want everyone to buy 10 songs that sound the same instead of just 2 or 3?... How interesting.

clifton [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 07:03:16 PM
Then we'll just have to pirate the album, I guess.

AntiNorm [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 07:04:30 PM
This is why Garth Brooks has been boycotting iTunes. He made a statement to the effect of "[album name] isn't [album name] without [song]", doing this for all the songs in the album.

whidbey [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 07:07:14 PM
AC/DC's an exception. Ya GOTTA hear the whole album.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 07:18:46 PM
You hear one song, you pretty much get the gist.

It's their music - they can sell it any way they want to sell it.

No itunes and Walmart only (in the US) - their management must be awesome

/just bring a few albums to RockBand dammit!

Everyone should buy their new album. The 2008 version of Back in Black is WAY better than the 2004, 2000, 1995, 1992, 1988, 1984, 1977, 1946 or 1912 version. I mean, all their songs sound totally unique, but this one, this one is really special.

impaler [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 07:43:58 PM
Hilarious.

AC/DC complaining that people only buy a few songs, instead of the album, just adds to the "AC/DC only plays one song" meme.

brap [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 07:55:25 PM
To be fair, like any rock-opera you can't truly appreciate "Balls of Thunder" without hearing "Nutz-o-Plenty", "Ride The Testicular Hippity-Hop", "Whole Lot O' Chowda", "Scroticular Inflation", AND "I'm The Saucier (In The Kitchen of Mansauce)".

ToxicMunkee [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 07:58:25 PM
Then instead of my monies I shall give them my meh.

MEH

Can't you sell "album only" things on iTunes? I'm pretty sure I've seen some classical stuff that's not available as individual songs, only as an album.

I also like that AC/DC is quoted as saying "We don't make singles, we make albums" -- and then at the end of the article, there is a link labeled "Listen to AC/DC's new single on demand!"

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 09:27:13 PM

In general, I'm an Album oriented music fan. I feel that a strong album of music is a hell of a lot better showing of talent than a strong song or two on an album of filler.

That said, AC/DC hasn't had a strong album in a long time. Their albums since "For those About to Rock" have usually had 2 to 3 good songs, and the rest decent-to-filler.

lajimi [TotalFark] 2008-09-25 11:13:36 PM
The band wants fans to purchase their music as a whole package, because the songs "belong together."

So now BOTH of their fans will have no choice but to download the song they want for free. Oh well, that's life(Sinatra, 1966).

Is what I thought about $90 tickets. that were sold out. after several presales and a postsale!

As for the album... viva la torrents

These nutfarkers won't release their catalogue a la carte cause then no one would buy their shiatty albums. That's why they won't release a studio greatest hits. fark em.

Ironic; I'm listening to "Riff Raff" (off of Powerage circa 1977?) as I click on this thread. IMO, their best album; not a bad song in the lot.

Fark U:
People who only buy singles are boring, uninteresting bufoons. I'm not saying you have to buy every song from every artist, but If you truly like a band you should respect them enough to at least listen to things that they work on that don't get radio play.

Shouldn't they leave it up to their fans to decide? I know when I was a kid I had to beg my parents to let me buy the $9 cassette album from Wal-Mart from anybody. And man I was hot when I found out the album only had one or two good tracks. Once upon a time when kids had 45-players were singles big business, AOR killed that off. Online music sales have brought singles back and for good reason, kids (and I keep saying kids because AC/DC is at its core teenager music) are the ones buying their songs $1 a pop and have to be choosy.

Illidan 2008-09-26 03:33:02 AM
Fark U: Besides, what is the worst that could happen? You could possibly find yourself liking something that wasn't the most popular radio track on the album? (it can happen)

At $10+ an album, I'm going to be picking and choosing mighty carefully if I need to pay out for the whole bunch every time I want a song.

(or just go somewhere I can pick up a reasonable dose of tunes for my cash - emusic comes to mind..)

AgentOrangeDrink 2008-09-26 05:03:47 AM
Fark U: Sometimes, other co-producers/artist/songwriters are in on a few songs here and there on albums. Maybe they (the band) have to pay some royalties or recover licensing fees in order to use someone else's lyrics on a track they really wanted to do, or cover songs, etc. Artists are funny that way. If no one buys the whole album and just wants a downloaded copy of a radio single hit, I guess maybe this could somehow be trying to protect the other people's rights of the pie on album work as well.

Besides, what is the worst that could happen? You could possibly find yourself liking something that wasn't the most popular radio track on the album? (it can happen)

People who only buy singles are boring, uninteresting bufoons. I'm not saying you have to buy every song from every artist, but If you truly like a band you should respect them enough to at least listen to things that they work on that don't get radio play. Lots of stuff that I hate at first ends up growing on me, because when you "don't like something" 9 times out of 10 its you, not the something. Maybe you're not musically matured enough to enjoy it yet. And so what if it "sounds the same" maybe all your ipod music sounds the same to me as well. All the same CRAP.

I'm not musically mature enough to enjoy AC/DC. Instead, I make recordings of my own farts and paint the album art with my own poop. I call myself AC/DC Jr.

Good for them.

iTunes SCREWS bands financially. Sure, a big band like AC/DC can probably strike a better deal than the average baby band can. But here's the average deal...

99 cents if broken up like this:

Apple gets 89 cents
The record company gets 10 cents
The artist gets one, thin cent

No joke. I was told this by a major label artist and that's the deal his band has.

jason103 2008-09-26 08:49:52 AM
er... 99 cents is broken up like that (not if)

jason103 2008-09-26 08:50:48 AM
uh... yeah. it's early. Apple gets 88 cents, not 89. I didn't get enough sleep last night to do simple math.

But you get the point.

Gordie_Howe_Hat_Trick 2008-09-26 09:29:42 AM
Oh, no ... if this album's not on iTunes, how ever will I find it online?

You might have outsmarted me this time, AC/DC. But this battle is far from over.

Backdraft32 2008-09-26 09:56:28 AM
Well then. I shall add them to the list of music I pirate annually as a ritual. Metallica founded that ritual for me. I delete their entire discography and grab a new version of it off of bit torrent each year. I like to keep it fresh.

I can understand musical integrity, but they should realize that people are only going to listen to what they want, and they will find a way to get it either way. May as well make some cash on it.

Rev. Skarekroe [TotalFark] 2008-09-26 10:00:31 AM
They've been doing this for years.
I don't particularly WANT any AC/DC, but if I ever decide to get some I'll be acquiring it through less than legal means, just out of principle. Hell, even Metallica lets you just buy "Enter Sandman" if you want to.

tallguywithglasseson: Can't you sell "album only" things on iTunes? I'm pretty sure I've seen some classical stuff that's not available as individual songs, only as an album.

Most soundtracks are like that, too. So if you want that exclusive song by (say) U2, you've also got to get whatever crappy new band the record label is trying to foist on the general public as well.

bethica 2008-09-26 11:01:12 AM
I've heard that when artists sign exclusive agreements with Wal-Mart, they're able to put a clause in that states Wal-Mart can only sell the album for $12.98 or less, or whatever the hell Wal-Mart is selling CDs for these days, so fans can't get gouged on the sticker price. Anyone else heard this?

As for not selling it on iTunes......meh. I'll buy the album because I'm a purist like that, and download from Limewire cuz I'm too lazy to rip it myself.

And so what if all AC/DC soungs sound the same? You know it. I know it. Hell, even THEY know it. They REVEL in it. Who cares? Listening to AC/DC is fun as hell, and when I saw them in 2000 I was deaf for a week. That makes them okay in my books.

I love the fact that they are also releasing the album as a vinyl release in addition to the CD. Now, Wal*Mart doesn't currently have a vinyl section. They will now? How many farking morons will be in Wal*Mart getting motor oil and diapers and then have a conniption fit trying to figure out how/why CD's got bigger?

Hate to break it to you (and said artist), but Apple takes $.35 of every dollar, not $.89. How the rest is divided is up to your contract with the label. Why would the artist say this to you? Because his label probably told them so. Think about it, if the label only takes $.10 they don't look so bad. But if they're taking $.64, insta-dicks (as if we didn't know that already).

Lots of reference here (including friends who are indies on iTunes), but here's a result from the Googlez

happens a lot on soundtracks. The one song you want isn't available and you have to buy the 17 track of instrumental crap to get the one pop song.

barneyfifesbullet 2008-09-26 12:10:51 PM
I already know exactly what the new AC/DC album sounds like. I have been listening to them since 1977. The new one will go right on the shelf beside the rest of their catalog.

Getting this song and that song through iTunes is for amateurs. The pros want albums and they also want their own hard copy.
