I thought the question about whether Phelps brought the boxes of Kellogg's into the nightclubs was great.

His image f*cking sucks. It's boring as hell. If I was him I'd be talking about the hookers, the special VIP treatment from the dancers, the long rails of blow I did off their asses. Who's gonna remember 4 years from now?

OK, well I'd tone it down a little, but I hate when douches won't stray just a little bit from whatever they're promoting.

That's why I listen to the shows I listen to on the radio. Because they don't pander to these assholes.

When you're listening to the radio and they say, "We'll have [flavor of the month] on after these messages you get interested. You want to hear from them, about them. You aren't listening for the sake of whatever they're looking to promote. So when the ONLY redeeming quality of the segment is the [flavor of the month]'s voice is present it gets really irritating.

/Apparently this has touched a nerve with me

That's why, despite the Ignorants' opinions, Howard Stern is still the greatest. When he has someone on, you know it's going to be a good interview.

That's not to say I haven't heard him kiss a bit of ass now and then - but when a man who insists on calling Ernest Borgnine "Mr. Borgnine" out of respect and then later follows that with a question about whether or not Mr. Borgnine delves into in his wife's third input, that's rare and entertaining.

At the end of Howard's day, his guests have traded valuable plugs and exposure for humiliation (or humanization) and entertainment for both Howard and his audience. Each, in their own way, are better served for the experience.

I don't think Michael Phelps would ever end up on Howard. The sad thing is, I think it's the show on which he'd actually prefer to appear. But, when an athlete is in the midst of image-building in America, it pays to be wholesome more than it pays to be human.

I've never understood why people do stupid crap like this.

If you don't enjoy interviews...why do them? Phelps isn't plugging some book or movie. Just wave 8 gold medals around and you really don't need to be "getting your name out there" for endorsements, it's already out there. If anything...giving advertisers and potential consumers a chance to see what a stiff he is is only going to HURT his endorsement deals.

Hasn't anyone learned from Tom Cruise's meltdown on Oprah? That old adage that there's no such thing as bad publicity? Eh, not so much. Cruise is a pariah now.

Why is he doing this? If anyone should be running a Palin strategy, it's Phelps.

I believe that. Wikipedia in general is fairly reliable and I personally look things up on there frequently. I just take some entries that I read with a grain of salt.

It's a good place to start your research or to find that choice piece of anecdotal evidence to support your case against a troll you must feed.

The citations are the next step if you are actually researching something... but that should just give you the keywords to make more accurate google searches. Or more accurate library excursions if you're stuck in the previous century.

what kind of personality do you expect from a guy that swims like a fish and eats like a horse. No time for fun, just swimmin and eatin.

Now, he can cut lose and have fun. Sheesh, let him live!

It is beyond me why people disrespect olympic athletes for cashing in on their 15 minutes in the months following their olympic wins. These people are almost exclusively amateur athletes, they're not paid for their efforts. Elite athletes put more effort into a single workout than jackhole radio hosts put into a month of broadcasts. God forbid they actually reap some sort of tangible benefit from their toils beyond the brief spotlight that being an olympic champion offers them.

He also is your typical frat guy both in looks, personality, and the way he acts.

Jeez, quit being such a douche. The radio guy was actually taking it pretty easy on him. He was just trying to get him to lighten up somewhat. He didn't ask anything that I thought was particularly harsh. As for Phelps, get the stick out of your ass Michael. If you don't want to do interviews and don't have the personality to pull it off (he doesn't), then don't do them.

By they way, I do know some radio guys that put a lot of effort into what they do. It isn't easy to come up with that stuff every day, but you wouldn't know this as your job is probably on an assembly line.

Dipshat DJ was fishing for dirt and Phelps didn't bite. Then he insulted the DJ behind the scenes (even better, makes it look like he can hold his composer when he should), and now the dick DJ wants to make an issue on Phelps calling his bullshat?

People who try to equate "i put a lot a time into my job" with "i put productive time into my job" are idiots.

Effort Merit

If i spend 20 hours on my homework, and it is shiite, I should not compare myself to the person who spent 20 mins and got it all correct. "but I worked so hard on it".

BFD, what did you benefit from doing it? if you wasted your time, and you are an idiot. If a radio host cannot do interviews, it might be their problem, and not the inteviewee. After all, MP has gotten 14 gold medals in the last 4 years.

Good point. Phelps has more gold medals than anyone, and Dan Le Batard can't even bait a frat boy during an interview. Shat, even Couric can nail a so-ho on Greek week.

Yea, but who's the professional here?

Is it really so surprising the Phelps comes across as a "stiff"? He's a 23 year old kid who happens to be a real good swimmer. LeBetard could have used this to help him relax a bit and even help him promote his charity, but instead he decided to fish for dirt, too bad really. If LeBatard was any good, he could have found a way to be entertaining without being a dick.

Incidentally, besides my "day job", I'm a public speaking coach and a stand-up comic, so I do have a little experience in this area.

That is not getting ambushed in an interview. I was expecting PED questions, but this being a SbB link, I should have known better than to expect anything of substance.

He basically asked if Phelps was using his fame to get laid (which he is doing), but in a more roundabout, somewhat nicer way.

Phelps froze up and didn't know how to respond. Having heard a couple interviews with Phelps before, I'm fairly certain this is due to the fact that Phelps isn't exactly the brightest bulb in the pack, as evidenced by his inability to handle the complicated procedure of hanging up a phone.

Yes, but if you are dealing with an interviewee who is a bit "stiff" or has trouble "going off script", then you don't just jump right into it. Give him an opportunity to get his "pat" material out of the way first, that will help him loosen up. Let him talk about his charity for a while then segway into more personal questions as if you are having a conversation that just happens to be on the radio.

I'll say it again, a GOOD interviewer should know how to work with an inexperienced interviewee.

NashMcNash 2008-09-26 10:58:58 AM
Sounds like this radio guy was just bothered by the fact that Phelps didn't take his bait. He knew well ahead that the purpose of the interview was for Phelps to promote a product. He wanted to play games and Phelps didn't go for it. That being said, you can't really knock Phelps for having no sense of humor about it. He's an athlete, not a professional pitch-man.

Funbags 2008-09-26 01:46:34 PM
The interviewer chose an awkwardly-phrased opening question, which Phelps didn't "get", and it seemed like he was put off the rest of the way. He's 23 years old, and probably has had dozens of cooler personal experiences than the creation of his tax shelter charitable foundation, but he clearly isn't the most cunning linguist, and had enough of trying to play along.

And you are obviously a moran who's never done this kind of work. A good morning show host puts a lot of time and effort into the job. In fact, a good morning show host pretty much puts his/her whole life into the job. And before you tell me what an expert you are, I will let you know that I did this for a living for a few years. Believe me, it isn't as easy as it looks. In fact, it was the hardest (and most fun) job I've ever had. Unfortunately, I wasn't very good at it. Truly talented people who do this are very hard workers, in fact many are total workaholics.

As far as Phelps is concerned...the guy has very little personality. He's a great swimmer, a good athlete and I'm sure works extremely hard, but he shouldn't be doing radio interviews if he can't handle what happened here.

I don't know anything about the guy who was doing the interview. He might be a total douche, but he didn't do anything that was too awful to Phelps.

It may be retarded, but it certainly isn't harsh. Phelps should have been able to easily handle that and have some fun with it. He didn't, instead he struggled with hanging up the phone and said some stuff they laughed about on the radio. He can swim, but that doesn't mean he isn't an idiot.

Just curious, do you have a job?
