Well, it's not a "reunion" per se. If it's the same lineup as was on that last record, it's more just Billy Corgan, plus fired/rehired drummer, and then an Asian dude and a chick who are not the same Asian dude and chick as either the previous Asian dude or EITHER of the former chicks.

So, it could pretty much be Zwan, for all that's worth.

Homer Simpson, smiling politely.

Whiney or not they still rock.

from the other articles I read, the tour should be renamed: Billy Corgan plays the Music of Smashing Pumpkins, with special guest Chamberlan on drums

Now, I was a big Smashing Pumpkins fan back in the day, but I've gotta say that any decent 90s-big-riff guitarist with a NASA-esque pedal board and any farking professional bass player more than make up for the missing parties. Chamberlain and Corgan are the only really irreplaceable original members.

True to an extent, except they play the Pumpkins catalog, the band gets along and they enjoy what they are doing. Anytime Billy and Jimmy play, its going to be a good show.

Here is Billy's statement on it.

Those of you that may have seen either the press release or any info out there about the tour may find yourself scratching your head a bit about the shows format. We tried to keep it simple but as is our custom, its just not always that simple!! SO I thought I would post up some additional info to make sure that there was absolute clarity about what shows would be going on where-when.

First off, the 2 night format is about playing the most songs over 2 nights that would hopefully create very distinct shows from one another. No song will be repeated means exactly as it sounds, if you go to show #1 of a 2 night stand (black sunshine!), you wouldn't hear anything on night # 2 (white crosses) that you heard song-wise on the first night. The cities where we are playing only 1 show will feature an amalgamated show that will most likely have some songs we won't be playing in the 2 night format shows, but take from both the sunshine and the crosses show. Get it? I hope so...cause its a lot for us to digest as well.

Below is a list of shows, where I'll highlight just for overkill what show will be taking place:

Sunshine, Cross, or SS (special show for the one offs)

Sat 11/1 Cleveland, OH Palace Theatre (SS)
Mon 11/3 Toronto, ONT Massey Hall (sunshine)
Tue 11/4 Toronto, ONT Massey Hall (crosses)
Thu 11/6 New York, NY United Palace Theatre (sunshine)
Fri 11/7 New York, NY United Palace Theatre (crosses)
Sat 11/8 Atlantic City, NJ (SS) Borgata
Tue 11/11 Washington, DC DAR Constitution Hall (sunshine)
Wed 11/12 Washington, DC DAR Constitution Hall (crosses)
Fri 11/14 Boston, MA Wang Center (sunshine)
Sat 11/15 Boston, MA Wang Center (crosses)
Sun 11/16 Uncasville, CT Mohegan Sun Arena (SS)
Tue 11/18 Chicago, IL Chicago Theatre (sunshine)
Wed 11/19 Chicago, IL Chicago Theatre (crosses)
Fri 11/21 Chicago, IL Auditorium Theatre (sunshine)
Sat 11/22 Chicago, IL Auditorium Theatre (crosses)
Mon 11/24 Kansas City, MO Midland Theatre (sunshine)
Tue 11/25 Kansas City, MO Midland Theatre (crosses)
Wed 11/26 St. Louis, MO Fox Theatre (SS)
Sun 11/30 San Diego, CA RIMAC Arena (SS)
Tue 12/2 Los Angeles, CA Gibson Amphitheatre (sunshine)
Wed 12/3 Los Angeles, CA Gibson Amphitheatre (crosses)

Gunny Highway: Whiney or not they still rock.

Disarm does not in any way shape or form rock.

Now SP is great when they do rock out, but when Billy tries to go all pretentious Brian Wilson on us, it almost always sucks.

fruitloop 2008-09-25 04:24:54 PM
this is possible, of course, because corgan has written about 85,000 songs

Saw them twice during their 2007 tour, rocked my face off both times. Hopefully going to both DC shows. Any word yet on the difference between sunshine/crosses?

I saw them a couple times back in the '90s, and if you're planning to see them live, you're in for a...what's the opposite of treat? If you enjoy tuneless shrieking and self-indulgent guitar solos that go on for 20+ minutes, you'll have a great time.

The first time I saw them, Garbage, who opened for them, was FAR SUPERIOR. The second time they were opening for KISS, so no contest there.

If you like em, listen to their albums. Billy Corgan shines in the studio, but sounds terrible live and is incapable of connecting with an audience.

Southern Atheist 2008-09-25 07:51:25 PM
Saw them in Clearwater back in August. Interesting show, but when I pay like $60 to see a band who hasn't toured in this state in 8 years, I'd like to hear Zero. Is it really that painful to play some hits? They are what got you hear in the first place. Trent Reznor owns Billy in every way possible, including live shows. NIN knows how to do new songs, hits, and deep cuts all in one set. Still, at least I can say "I saw Smashing Pumpkins." Let's see, who's left from the 90s I need to see? RATM, Primus...

Can you enlighten the class as to what James did that Jeff can't do? If you mention anything other than "telling jokes" then you FAIL.

I saw them live. They flippin' rocked. Three encores.

I was at the Kansas City show two dates after the whole keyboardist death-drummer fired incident. Grant Lee Buffalo opened instead of Garbage, and they SUCKED. We missed out on Garbage thanks to the midtour pause I just mentioned. Oh yeah, and the Pumpkins had the drummer from Filter filling in for Chamberlain and he did great.

Call James Iha and D'arcy replaceable all you want, but it's no coincidence that Smashing Pumpkins went downhill after Adore. Adore is a great album, but it's the last of the Pumpkins. Zwan? Whatever. Future Embrace? Please. Zeitgeist? Uh, no. This article made no mention of Iha or D'arcy returning so it isn't a reunion. Which means I won't be going to the two KC shows otherwise.

^ would have killed to be at the I.S tour

I think ill end up going to one, if not two shows. Maybe ill check out some live vids first... when they broke up I had a moment of "Damn, I never got to see them live" so I guess I best take my chance.

thoughtwired 2008-09-26 06:12:17 AM
I agree with shenanigans.

& i can one up you... i saw them in a tiny club (The M-Shop) way, way, way back.

Fantastic on album, a mixed bag live.

Garbage played a better set during the 96 show, and after the endless wonky encore of "the Aeroplane flies high" (or whatever the hell it was) they turned the house lights on and 90% of the audience had left.

I don't know how it could be. I was about to agree completely with it. Corgan has always sucked live, even in the Gish days. I love Siamese Dream, but they peaked there, and should have just packed it in then.

Agreed. I had that exact shirt :). Garbage opened and was good. It was the first time I realized Shirley Manson has a strong Scottish accent... "This ones for yew!" (you). My buddy got D'arcy's signature on his shirt. I was jealous.

Second this!

I went to the rescheduled show in seattle where that overdose happened. Some 6 months later on January 6th I think it was. D'arcy never even opened her eyes the whole show, just seemed she didnt want to be there.

Bought tickets for Endfest 2006 believeing that it was gonna be the whole lineup, it wasnt. I walked out before they started
They are not the same band w/o those 2.

On a side note from Sarah Mclaughlin Wiki: Her song "Angel"-- which was inspired by the fatal overdose of Smashing Pumpkins touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin-- made sales skyrocket.
