i would just add that the grateful dead and, of all bands, def leppard, deserve credit for the "baking the master tapes" manuever.

the grateful dead did this for the Dick's Picks Vol. 2 release, which came out in 1995 (Cleveland, OH, 10/31/71).

They should have used Chinese Radiation.

"Reissue...repackage...repackage."

I thoight I bought the "definitive" version in the box set. This is at least the second re-issue since then. And the "artists" and record companies wonder why consumers openly rip and burn CDs.

Allen Ravenstine used to be my neighbor!

Anyroads, the fact that this thread has fewer comments in it than the "one-man ac/dc" nonsense below it pretty well proves my suspicion about the terrible, terrible set of opinions about music round these here parts.

Wendy Carlos baked the masters to the Tron Soundtrack. She was tickled pink to get her music back.

Almost ALL old masters redone for CD are baked. I haven't got the time to explain why, but this is like saying a car was fueled with petrol.

It's so common that it should be Lindsey Lohan.

/ex mastering engineer.

I'm under the impression it's to "fix" the metallic bits on the tape, so it doesn't crumble when it's ran through the pinch rollers in the tape machine.

Glad they remastered them with such nice bit rates. Shame they're not releasing them in a format to take advantage of it.

/i too have the box set

My favorite Ubu record. I'll put it on my Christmas list, but I won't buy it; I'm content with whatever version I currently own on CD. I used to be an audiophile (half-speed mastered, anyone?), but nowadays Dolby-B cassette hiss is fine with me.

/Cassette? What's that?

Saw them on that tour, too. Saw them again in New York doing a 25th anniversary show at the Knitting Factory. David Thomas was passing out copies of the original CD release of The Art Of Walking (still in their long boxes). They had found them in one of their basements, and since a remastered version of that one had been put out, they decided to just give away the old ones. Pretty cool.

Being a veteran of the Eraserhead-like Flats of Cleveland, I can say that this band had the impact of a Hadron super-collider on the minds of those who were forward-thinking, and sent the rest fleeing for their safety. It was like a band from 2032 had been sent back in time to annoy the Zeppelin crowd, and enlighten the few non-zombies around.

The first three albums, made when they were still a democracy, were portals to another dimension.

Love the Ubu. One of my favorite bands, ever. That being said, my vinyl copy of "Dub Housing" sounds great as-is, so I'll pass on the remaster. I have all their albums, in fact. Groundbreaking stuff that's like nothing else before, or since.

Now what I really want, is a good DVD set of all their live stuff. I know it's out there, just waiting to be released. What's the friggin' holdup?!?! Gimme!

because since 'round the early 80s, the magnetic storage medium sucked. (new window)

Wait, there is a Pere Ubu Thread and I am just now finding it.

Well shait, since I'm late to the party allow me to say I love Modern Dance, but I always kinda liked Dub Housing more.

David Thomas said they gathered up what they had and gave it to a videographer who promptly disappeared. Damn it all to hell.

The reason for baking tapes is that back in the 80s the tape manufacturers changed the binder (which is the glue that holds the magnetic oxide [the stuff that holds the sound] to the plastic baking on tapes) to something that was supposed to better, but was actually worse. After a few months, the binder got soft and sticky, and if you tried to play the tapes the oxide would start rubbing off onto the tape heads, endangering the tapes and dirtying up the heads and rollers and other bits on the tape machine.

Eventually, some wise guy figured out that you can bake those tapes at low heat over a coupla hours and fix those tapes. Well, the fix would last only for about a day or so, but that was enough to transfer the audio onto another medium, such as digital files.

Analog tape is a lot like photographic film; it's a major pain in the ass compared to digital media, but it sounds/looks much better than digital.

I managed to get on their guest list for a show in by this band Newport KY in the 1980s, but ended up missing the show. I heard it was a good one.
