(Contact Music) Spiffy The Kinks' Ray Davies says they're "three quarters of the way" towards a reunion, waiting for his brother Dave to recover, so they can work on some new material and resume beating the crap out of each other   (contactmusic.com) divider line 22

Gorsh I love the Kinks.

The first record I ever made mommy buy me was a 45 rpm of "All Day and All of the Night." To this day that song makes me want to run around in circles, going beserk with joy.

If they pick the wrong setlist this could be a travesty..I'd be bummed to have to sit thru 'Come Dancing' and most of the later shiate..

Judging from the quantity and quality of Ray's material, I'd love to see the original Kinks performing some new Ray songs, can hardly wait! They shouldn't do it if Dave can't participate though.

Possibly the most underrated and under appreciated band of all time.
Save for Ace of Base.
/Village Green on the pod today. F*cking genius.

Love the Kinks---would kill to see them together again. Ray Davies is one of the greatest songwriters ever.

I think the only place the Kinks are so underrated is the US. And its a shame, because they were up on that mountain with other gods like The Who, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles.

/british invasion FTW

It will be the original band, not the one during the "Come Dancing", so Let's hope they play just songs up to "Muswell Hillbillies".

I ran into Ray when I was about 10 years old. I was at a swim meet at East Carolina University. They were playing in the university gym. The pool and the gym were connected by a long hallway. My friends and I walked down towards the gym and saw a big spread of food laid out for everyone. We wanted to steal some small boxes of cereal because no one was out there watching. Before we could get to the table, Ray walked out and said in the craziest British accent, "What can I do for you gentlemen, take you on a trip around the world?" and then one of the university police saw us and whisked us away. I sat up at night singing "Come Dancin" for the next 3 or 4 months thinking about how cool that was.

For the Uninitiated in the Kinks, outside of their early hits and, or late 70's early 80's hits, here are three excellent starting points:

"Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire" is a nice late 60's rocker, amazing because it manages to be a sort of Rock Opera, but without relying so much on story that the songs themselves suffer.

"Muswell Hillbillys" is a great starter for fellow Americans, as it is a clever combination of American roots music, (Blues, Country, Folk) and British Music Hall. (The Title is even a hint at this, since Muswell Hill is the Suburb of London that Ray Davies grew up)

"The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society" is probably the closest thing they came to Psychedelia. But song for song, one of their best.

"Lola Vs Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One" Has elements of the US Meets UK genre blending of "Muswell Hillbillys", but packaged as a concept album attacking the rabid business like nature of the music industry, and with a dim view of humanity. That it manages to be so cynical and not depress the listener is all due to the band's presentation of the music. Probably the most instantly accessible Kink's album of their late 60's, early 70's winning streak.

/took too much time writing this. Hope somebody finds this useful.

I always thought of the Beatles as "Kinks Lite". I was just a dumb annoying kid though. :/

OK, if you are 10 years old and an adult says this to you at a gym, you might want to be a little afraid. Even if it is Ray Davies.

Maybe "the dude" WANTS to do it as soon as he is healthy, ever think of that? Maybe this is his motivation to get better.

True. True. But there were university police walking right beside him so I didn't feel scared at the time. I just thought "This is the guy who sings "Come Dancin" which at the time was the only Kinks song I knew. I am probably also cloudy about the details too. It was a long time ago. The above was how I remember the story and I like to remember it in a strange, funny way. And in addition, the early 80's was a little less child molester minded times. Maybe not less dangerous times, but people trusted people a little more back then.
