Well, if it hurts, maybe you could try a cure for pain.

Just thankful I got to see them before he died. Oh, and I celebrated 9/9/99 with friends sitting on the porch and drinking red wine in his honor, since he was no longer around to do it himself.

It's my curse, had tix to see them the night after he died. Have Mogwai tix for tonight...

I listen to them every Thursday in the afternoon.

Never heard of him. I'm not into indie rock so watching this was a pleasant surprise. I like the song, I'd just never heard of this guy.

mdbuff12 2008-09-24 01:47:39 PM
Man, they had a great, unique sound. Dying on stage though; I'm not sure if that's awesome or tragic.

I don't even have to watch the video to know it's awesome.
thank you for locking in my musical choice for the rest of the day.

I miss that guy like I miss Phil Hartman and John Candy. Hands down Morphine put on the best shows I've ever seen.

unchellmatt 2008-09-24 02:02:45 PM
Only 46 since he went down... Heart attack. True, true pity. "Cure for Pain" is probably my favorite song by them, so thank you EatHam.

This guy still lives, and coonts like New Kids On The Block are still around.

GREATEST. SANDMAN/MORPHINE SONG. EVAR.

Sandman was an icon. One of the greatest designers of sonic drugs.

Wow...I didn't know today was Sandman's b-day.

I've had "Like Swimming" for a while, now - I just bought the rest of their albums two days ago.

Weird timing.

Well you've got to go some way... there are far worse alternatives. The bass player from Chic (Think 90% of hip-hop bass lines evar) died the same way.

Great band, that Morphine.

Rope on Fire. Such a biatching song from such a biatching band.

And I didn't know Phil Hartman and Sandman shared birthdays. Sad. Two great men taken before their time.

The saddest thing about that song for me? He never made it to 9/9/99.

One of my favorite shows ever was Morphine back on the "Yes" tour. Five encores, including "The Virgin Bride." (Anyone know where I can get a decent copy of that song?) Met the guys after the show, and all three signed my CD booklet.

I remember hearing about his death a few days after it happened.
They were (and still are) one of my favorite bands of all time and Mark was an incredible and creative talent.

Also it's really inspiring that he never gave up trying to make it in music. He was in his forties, I believe, before he had any commercial success, but I could be wrong.

R.I.P. Sandman

Goonie_Goo_Goo 2008-09-24 07:15:40 PM
I'm friends with Chris Ballew, lead singer of the Pres. of the USA. Chris used to be roomates with Sandman back in the early 90s (which explains his use of 2 and 3-stringed instruments like Mark). I always gotta watch myself when I talk to Chris because I always want to ask more about Mark's musicianship than the stuff going on with the Presidents. Sandman was the sh*t. To me, he's right up there with the Beatles, Hendrix and Mozart.

I did the exact same thing.

I don't even think I would have even known he had died if I didn't browse through a used copy of USA Today at some Denny's. I was quite sad. Thought that "Like Swimming" was their last album until I heard "The Night" was being released, ended up being maybe my favorite Morphine album.

Anyway, I got a couple bottles of wine and decided to go to fancy route and make my own French Fries (with pepper...). I cut the potatoes up and put too much butter on them (ain't no chef), too much wine with the buttery potatoes made the morning of 9/10/99 really rough on the stomach. I threw up at work like 3 times.

Anyone hear Twinemen, which is the 2 living members with the female singer? Not nearly as great, but still good. Same saxy sound... but I sure miss that voice and that bass and that voice.

polf pilf 2008-09-24 08:36:00 PM
oh, you wrotevonster: Martstar: Just thankful I got to see them before he died. Martstar: Just thankful I got to see them before he died.

When I wrote "I did the exact same thing," I meant the part where you drank wine on 9/9/99, not the part where I actually got to see them perform. Lucky fella.

I once made a breakup mixtape for a girl.

Pretty sure the track list was something like:

I'm Free Now
A Good Woman is Hard to Find
Baby biatch (Ween)
Under My Thumb (Rolling Stones)
Whisper
Take Me With You

And some other passive-aggressive stuff. Damn, think of all the good breakup songs that have gone unwritten.

RIP

Still remember him from his Treat Her Right days. Got to see them a few times back there in the Iron Horse Cafe in Northampton, MA.
Good times. Thanks, Mark!

I've just started collecting and reading the pulp fiction books by Jim Thompson simply because Sandman said he was a huge influence. Goddamn, I can see it. Killer stuff.

Try AKACOD-Monique Ortiz as Sandman and Dana from Morphine. Very Morphine esq. Check it out.

Missing Sandman still tho...

I went to school with Sandman's brother, who died. Then another one of his brothers died. Then he died. Google "Four Minus Three: A Mother's Story.

Pretty freakin sad.

Hey, my pleasure. And I had never seen that video until today, what an awesome solo towards the end of the song, there

GibbyTheMole 2008-09-25 10:07:42 AM
Morphine was all kinds of awesome. Tragic that Mark died. He was a one-of-a-kind talent.

By the way - if you're a Morphine fan, you should check out Twinemen, as polf pilf suggested. Excellent stuff.

Also - the band Bourbon Princess is very Morphine-esque. In fact, Morphine drummer Jerome Deupree is in the band. Monique Ortiz is absolutely smoldering. And I mean the music. Dark and sexy as Hell. As a bonus, she's pretty hot, too. (by the way - isn't it about friggin' time for another Princess album?) Supposedly, they filmed a concert for DVD release, several years ago, but it's still on the shelf.

The solo "Sandbox" Mark Sandman set is another must-have. Some real gems in there.

Cheers,
Gib :-)

This is really sad. I was at the New Orleans Jazz fest one year and a couple of guys I knew said, "Hey, we're gonna go over to some local bar and watch Morphine." At the time I had never heard of them and I was more concerned with seeing Ani DiFranco play. One of the stupidest moves of my life. Mark died about a year and a half later.

I was lost, but now I'm found. Glad I saw this thread, too. I needed to listen to them again.

Isn't there any Claypool fans out there? Let's get some 'Hey-oh's' for the Sandman! Hey-oh, hey-oh, heyoh heyoh heyaah, hey-yah hey-yah, haah haah haah haah haah!

(Claypool gave him props at a lot of his concerts as one of the most innovative bassists he'd ever met, now THAT'S a compliment.)

One of the best shows I ever saw. Didn't leave the stage for any encores, just told us that this was the 1st encore, 2nd encore, and to hold on for the big finish, the unprecedented 3rd encore.

...Never looked at the bass guitar the same way after hearing them for the first time.
