That's OK. I'm sure the members of Judas Priest were hospitalized for Living After Midnight...

Very nice headline. +1.

This is a bad week for drummers. First, Travis Barker burns off all of his expensive inkwork, and now this?

Let's hope some careless nurse forgets and gives him a sponge bath. Once he's wet, I'm sure he'll blister up and give birth to a half-dozen more drummers to replace the injured ones.

If we're lucky, maybe the meanest one will come out pre-mohawk'ed.

Grandfather: I warned you. With mogwai comes much responsibility. But you didn't listen.
[gestures at television]
Grandfather: And you see what happens.
Randall Peltzer: I'm sorry. I didn't mean it...
Grandfather: You do with mogwai what your society... has done with all of nature's gifts. You do not understand.
Grandfather: You are not ready.

I didn't think a Mogwai thread would ever get greenlighted. Proves that with a +25 headline anything is possible.

/loves me some Mogwai

this. they're one of the few bands i never get tired of seeing. i think i'm up to nine or ten times already, and it's been well worth it every time.

Nice to see the Mogwai love in the room here. I'm a big fan. Bummer to hear about the pacemaker issues; hopefully he'll make a full recovery. They are indeed fantastic live. (Well, provided you have nice earplugs: them farkers play LOUD!)

Add me to the list of Mogwai fans...anyone grab "the Hawk Is Howling" yet? How is it?

/My Father, My King=best Mogwai track ever recorded.

I'm not surprised, after their show at ATP I almost had to go to the hospital from the awesomeness.

sad they had to cancel their tour!

Sophistimucated 2008-09-23 04:27:55 PM
I used to play 'Christmas Steps' in an old band of mine. Mogwai roars!
Anyone else think being on a pacemaker as a drummer would be, um, problematic? Not being too familiar with them (pacemakers that is), do they have a dial that you can up the bpm when you're are exerting yourself?

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-09-23 05:08:49 PM
i'm thinking about getting into Mogwai...

can a fellow farker perchance point me in the direction of a good/great album or two of theirs, as a starting point?

hazeinmyeyes 2008-09-23 05:26:22 PM
new album is awesome, have tix to (not) see them tomorrow night in Toronto...

Come On Die Young? No way - that's their most divisive album. 'Happy Songs For Happy People' was my introduction, and it's brilliant. 'Young Team' or 'Rock Action' would be a good 2nd choice.

This is indeed a bad week for drummers. lucky that no musicians were involved.

the first i heard of theirs was CODY. it took me a while to get into, but nigh on a decade later,i probably listen to it the most out of all of them. i never really got into HSFHP. i liked that they were looking to do something a little different but most of it fell pretty flat for me. ah well.

Third_Uncle_Eno
i'd suggest either YT or CODY. the BBC Government Commissions compilation is pretty great too. that might actually be a pretty good starting point, as is covers most of their career, even if it is alternate versions. plus the twenty-minute version of Like Herod on that gives me all kinds of boners.

also, this thread appears to have attracted a lot of torontonians. no wonder mogwai play here so damn often.

It's my humble opinion that 'Young Team' has the brightest moments, but also drags mightily in parts. I'm probably alone on this, but I think 'EP+6' is a GREAT starting point for someone new to Mogwai. I'd argue it's much more consistent than any of their other records (even other comppilations/live bits), and it's probably a little more accessible (relatively speaking) in terms of song length and noise.

thesloppy: EP+6

it's been far too long since i've listened to that. this must be rectified.

HEre's my review of the new album...it is MUCH more pacient than MR. Beast. Songs take much longer to develop and there is a lot more intricacy to them (which is a good thing!). The negative points I have is that they never recapture the sheer sonic blast/musical catharsis that they had in their earlier albums. Although, it does have more pluck than the Zidane soundtrack (which is well worth it as well, but in a different way). All in all though, it is well worth it. Besides, if you are a fan, you know you have to have it.

As for my take on introductions to their music. I started off with Come On Die Young (mainly because it was available the day I decided to purchase an album, and this is back when the dinosaurs walked around communicating with Jesus so I couldnt just download the one(s) I needed). Personally, I LOVE Young Team and think that 90% of it is an awesome introduction. If you are just looking for individual songs, download Mogwai Fear Satan and My Father/My Kingdom and you will be in a good place. The 4Satin EP is often overlooked, but Superheros of BMX is one of their most brilliant songs. If you have the chance to see 'em live, dont ever hesitate...just go (and bring earphones)...the smaller the venue the better.

/best of luck Drummer man...maybe you'll be able to sell this pacemaker on ebay as well!
//shlashies for the pure sake of it.
///oh ya, off topic question... why is it whenever anyone hotlinks a pic they have to announce the fact that it is hotlinked (usually shamelessly?)
