Then we have to have the "the only good metal is from Sweden with names in fonts that you can't read because it's nothing but squiggly lines" discussion.

Yeah its quite hilarious, if only those kids knew that stuff is what tops the charts in Sweden. Its like someone from Europe saying pop is dead and only Britney Spears does it right anymore.

A lot of good metal does come out of Sweden, but nto all of it as some farktards may claim. Most good new metal comes from the US actually. With a few Exceptions. I just hate the elitists who claim that there is no good american metal anymore, and all they listen to is "TRUE KVLT black-metal" and bands that have indecipherable band logos.

TFA: Metallica frontman James Hetfield has reportedly promised to shave off his beard in tribute to a fan who refused to shave until the rockers released a new album.

Los Angeles-based Mick Cassidy finally shaved off his beard this month, after Metallica released their 12th album, Death Magnetic - their first in five years.

shiate I apologize I guess I'm way behind the times now. When I went through my metal phase in high school that was the case for Swedish, Norwegian, and Finnish charts. I haven't been out of school for very long so I just assumed that was still the case. Whenever I hear people talk about metal I think of Children of Bodom and Edguy and how all the kids thought they were hardcore, even though they were just mainstream European bands that hadn't been played out here very much.

anyways thanks for correcting me. I'm far too lazy to check out when stuff like that changes, especially now that I try and do everything I can to keep mainstream commercial music out of my ears. Not because its the "cool" thing to do, but because its lame music that bothers my ears.

Preface: I'm not out to say such and such metal is bad, and that my favorite band is better...

I'm not a fan of a lot of 'new wave American Heavy Metal', it hasn't done it for me. Either I find I don't like the guitar work (which I've found a large number of Swedes/Euros do well), or I don't like the singers voice/style, lyrical composition, etc.

Then again, I think the Swedish brand is getting filled with the same things, folks trying out a bunch of different combinations trying to find 'the next big thing'.

I dunno, I've just been gravitating towards the Europeans more frequently nowadays, probably as a result of the massive upswing of American Metal acts that get shoved down everyones throat...

"THE NEXT GREAT SOUTHERN DEATH METAL BAND!"
"THE MOST COMPLEX EAST COAST METAL"
"THE FASTEST BAY AREA THRASH"
"THE MOST HARDCORE METALCORE!"

etc.

It becomes too formulaic for my tastes, which is why I like to enjoy Volbeat every now and then.

its not that its cool to hate everything, its that as you get older, most people don't like louder, screaming music. Or their tastes change and so what was awesome when they liked that genre is what they will only ever accept as good.

I'm not a fan of formula either, but then again, people need labels to easily identify what might appeal to their tastes.

A few "NWOAHM" bands that you may not have heard of that may suprise you. (If you havent already heard of them)

Unearth
A Life Once Lost
Through The Eyes Of The Dead (Debut album [Bloodlust] was better than their new CD Malice)
Most Precious Blood
Chimaira (for the most part their earlier stuff wasn't as overproduced as it is now)
and Black Tide isn't bad, if you can get past the fact that they're all under 21.

Not to say Euro metal is bad either, what is probably my favorite band overall is from Sweden (Meshuggah, and not for the faint of heart, or rhythym impaired)

I'm more of an open book when it comes to music and where it comes from. It just sucks that there are people who think the music they like is better than everyone elses. They are what's bringing metal down again.

Not to say that good metal isn't hard to find these days, because it definitely is.

Errr no. Metallica changed their sound to some kind of modern rock/metal when mainstream interest in thrash started to wain. Whether this was a creative choice or for money/album sales (more likely) it's easy to see why a thrash fan would make such comments. And there have been plenty of bands from the same era who have continued to be successful and keep their integrity intact (slayer etc).

The difficult about thrash in the current market is making it sound fresh. Metal has just progressed past the thrash era.

Thats why I moved on to tech, death, grind, post-metal, etc etc.

Metallica always releases the most radio-freindly tracks as singles.
I'd rank The Day That Never Comes in 6th or 7th place on that album.

The released singles suck balls in comparison to the other songs on the album, given that they're being streamed everywhere, it doesn't take much effort to check things out.

Magics5RIP: The difficult about thrash in the current market is making it sound fresh. Metal has just progressed past the thrash era.

ummm ... while i can appreciate what your sayin' ... you may wanna chat with the following bands ...

fastkill
fueled by fire
warbringer
avenger of blood
dekapitator
violator
toxic holocaust
municipal waste
merciless death

does some of it sound the same? sure. but the notion of a "genre" means there's similarities between artists. (yeah i woulda named bands like Exodus, Kreator, etc but most of us metalheads already know about them)

The problem with most metal is that most guys in metal bands only listen to other metal bands, so it just becomes an endless parade of derivative wankery.

In other news, there's a new Iced Earth album, and Matt Barlow is back in the band. Am I the only one excited about that?

/"Death Magnetic" is pretty awesome
