(Rolling Stone) Interesting Metallica, The Stooges, Run-DMC lead Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees. Still no Tom Waits but rest assured: Chic, Wanda Jackson and Little Anthony and the Imperials made the list   (rollingstone.com) divider line 98

For Metallica to make it in before Tom Waits is a sin.

I'm also proposing Captain Beefheart - listen to Tom Waits prior to 'Swordfishtrombomes', which was released after he was introduced to Beefheart, and you'll see what a massive influence the Captain was on him.

Tom Waits & Beefheart are great- but are by no means Hall of Famers. They'll give it to Tom waits when he dies I'm sure.

Metallica? Without a doubt.

Does anyone outside of Cleveland actually care about this? Maybe if it was limited to actual Rock n Roll it would mean something but even then it's just a big circle jerk.

Every year Rush isn't inducted makes it more and more of a joke.

The RnR HoF is bunk until Rush and Iron Maiden are in.

Well, if Madonna can get in there, then I suppose dudes in makeup playing cock rock and dancing around in flashy pyrotechnics should too. Talent is obviously not a pre-req ...

Nobody should want to be in the rock n roll hall of fame. Rock music is meant to subvert the establishment - such an organization is creating the establishment.

If I were one of these bands, I'd tell the folks at Cleveland to piss off. Tom Waits should be proud.

thatvoiceguy: Every year Rush isn't inducted makes it more and more of a joke.

It's called the "Rock n Roll" hall of fame, not the "Shrill Feline Death Rattle" hall of fame.

I don't care for this list, but I never really cared about RnRHOF inductees. There are hundreds of acts that deserve to have at least a mention in the RnRHOF that don't and probably won't get the recognition.
I visited the HOF a few years ago. It's neat to look at notebooks with scribbled out lyrics, and see some guitars I recognized from so and so and such and such.

Some stuff should be really preserved for future generations, but I prefer to do that by playing my CDs at my kids.

Fix action:

Rename it to the Music Hall of Fame
have wings that represent each major genre of music

Heavy Metal
Rock
Pop
R&B
Rap
Country
Jazz
Blues
Electronica -maybe (could fall under Pop)
Punk -maybe (could fall under Rock)

There.. everyone is happy

thatvoiceguy: Every year Rush isn't inducted makes it more and more of a joke.

Exactly. And for Tom Waits to not be in is ridiculous as well. The guy is a genius.

Rock and Roll was once a music of the people, but these scumwads who run the R&RHOF are just rich elitists out of touch with the masses that have made them rich. By injecting their insane and irrelevant industry politics into the equation, they've ruined the entire point of the R&RHOF, and are aiding in the assassination of the genre.

Run DMC?? Get the fark out of here.

They aren't rock, and their last hit album was over 22 years ago.

Hell, the Beastie Boys should be next if they're just going to let anyone with a turntable and an ability to steal sample other people's music.

No offense, but since when is Tom Waits "rock and roll"? Don't take that the wrong way. I think Tom Waits as my own personal hell. Mumbling, gravely nonsense with someone else playing an unrelated tune. Another good way to know it's terrible? The hippy idiot I used to work with LOVED it. Couldn't stop telling me how fantastic it was.

maxx2112 2008-09-22 02:01:25 PM
Chic? I can see Niles Rogers because of his production work, but not Chic as an act.

Run DMC definitely belongs.

And put me in the "it's a joke at least until Rush gets in" camp.

/ it'll probably be a joke afterward, too.

He was right.
Really, take another listen to 'Rain Dogs'. Something doesn't have to be upbeat, guitar-driven, verse/chorus/verse to be rock and roll.

I know this is a foreign concept for the internet and it is much more fun to argue, but the fact of the matter is that it's music and it has always been and will always be subjective.

Go Stooges!!

Gonz037: I know this is a foreign concept for the internet and it is much more fun to argue, but the fact of the matter is that it's music and it has always been and will always be subjective.

That's the fun of it.

Take a look through any 'Top albums' list. Not the ones that necessarily sold the most, but the ones that are considered the best. Take an album like The Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin", or My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless". They constantly rank in the top 5 albums of the 1990s, yet comparatively few people have ever heard them, next to an album like The Backstreet Boys "Black and Blue". If music is subjective, then why isn't the latter placed above the two aforementioned albums on every list? It sold hundreds of times as many copies, and there are millions more people who bought it, and loved it. Yet, when it comes to ranking "greatness", you'd be pressed to find it mentioned anywhere. Subjective taste explains most, but not all of what makes some music great, and other music average. Otherwise 'Thriller' and 'Back in Black' would be at the top of every 'Best of' list in existance for the last 25 years.

If you're not a pal of Rolling Stone mag and Jann Wenner, not a participant of the NY wing of the music industry social circle, never recorded for Sire Records, you have little chance of being in the R&R HoF. They're currently trying to figure out a way to induct Eric Clapton for something else. Maybe a jam session in 1975.

But, you knew already what a crock of shiat it is. I'm just sayin'.

Anyone that says Billy Joel and James Taylor are more important to the history of Rock and Roll than Black Sabbath and KISS are deserves a beatdown.

Gawd, I can't stand Kiss. Not a big fan of Rush either (don't worry, I'm sure you hate the bands I like too. It's okay.)
However, they should still be in the Hall of Fame. Sabbath and Tom Waits too.

I do agree with the nominations of Metallica, Run-DMC, and especially the muthafarking STOOGES! Fun House is one of my favorite albums.

/please don't let Eddie Vedder do any inductions ever again.

Seriously. You are a Rush fan and you are laughing at KISS? You must be Canadian or "special".

Talk about influence. Most recent bands list KISS as an influence. And how could they not?

Bari 2008-09-22 04:53:02 PM
Mustaine and Newsted (sp?) definitely deserve it.

I still believe Mustaine wrote the vast majority of the riffs for Kill 'em all and the SONG Ride the Lightning (not the entire second album though).
