...Who?

More credits on his Wikipedia page, including session drummer on some pretty fun TV theme songs: Flintstones, I Dream of Jeannie, MASH, Green Acres, Partridge Family, Odd Couple, Brady Bunch, among others.

Wow. Never heard of him, but I've certainly heard him. Who knew?

Just going about his day, he probably heard his own work two or three times on TV, radio, and Muzak.

Damn. There goes any hope of an EL&P reunion.

He was devastated by the loss of his son, Robert.

Dear Jerk: Damn. There goes any hope of an EL&P reunion.

It would never have happened anyway, at least not with the way Leith and Dreg think of each other now.

That was actually Hal Blaine on the Brady Bunch theme, he also did Three's Company too. Go read about him sometime, his resume makes Earl look like a dillitant!
Earl pretty much invented the back beat and was THE rock n roll drummer. I saw this on Wiki and LOL'd:
Late in his career, Palmer appeared in a music video with Cracker on the song "I hate my generation". As Addicted to Noise tells the story:"According to Cracker leader David Lowery, when Palmer was asked if he would be able to play along with the songs, he gave Lowery a look and said, 'I invented this shiat.'"

Sad.

That a great talent is lost.

AND, that so few people even know who he is/was.

Earl Palmer is sadly one of the forgotten gods...what a badass he was. RIP, rum-tum.

I met him in New Orleans in '99 and he signed a copy of his book for me. He was quite a pleasant fellow and seemed to be at peace with the music business and his place in it. A true pioneer in early days of Rock-N-Roll.

The most memorable part of the book was him discussing the difficulty of playing cartoon soundtracks. I had never thought about it before, but if you really listen to the music for a Tom & Jerry cartoon it's ridiculously difficult. Those guys were so farkin' good they could just read it off the paper and nail it right with the animation. My memories a bit vague, but it seems like he said it was so difficult that he would get physically ill at the end of some sessions.

What a loss. It makes it even sadder when you think that two days ago, a talentless d-bag like Travis Barker almost dying made headline news. Now a true master of the craft passes and all you get is "OMG WTF iz that f@g?".

From those about to rock,

we salute you.

Backbeat
is indeed a great read. Anyone going "who?" should be embarrassed for themselves; if not, I'll be embarrassed for you. Google the man's name (that's not too complicated for you, is it?) and behold a great rock-and-roll pioneer. One of the finest music talents to come out of New Orleans...

RIP session god
