If he didn't tell anyone, why is there an article at all, with their freaking names in it and everything?

The situation of the 11 year old really intrigues me. Life a constant state of fear, completely out of your control, ripped from friends...but still how exciting. I'd like to read the memoirs of someone with a similar experience. Which I'm sure has been written already.

dbaggins: what is a family in witness protection doing in an international newspaper (with pictures) in the first place ?

Some really astute "chap" recognized him from one of those court drawings.

Australian and British police quickly moved the family out of their rented home and flew them back to Britain, where they have assumed a new identity.

Several members of the gang that hit the Securitas depot in February 2006, are still at large.

BRILLIANT!

Frank Booth: gurgler?

Aussie slang for the hole thingy in the bottom of the sink where the water goes.

/Not sure of the American colloquialism for it even lol
//"Plughole" I think I've heard in movies?

But there can't be any book signings. Just in case the bad guys... or Borat... show up.

Actually if they flew them to say Canada but said they flew them to the UK, that is brilliant. Or even just moved them around in Oz.

LOL, yeah of course, drain. I was too focused on thinking of the colloquialism/slang term to even think of the normal word. ;)

What an arse of a neighbor.

If you think you know someone is in the witness protection program, just keep your fat mouth shut and your thoughts to yourself.

Better that someone pointed out how easy it was to find them, right? Personally I would request a new face, and to move to somewhere like the Caribbean.

Man, I would hate to be sent to Australia for witness protection. "Hey, we're going to make sure you're safe from some people by sending you to a place where the spiders are a foot across and all the snakes will kill you in seconds."

It's not about life in the witness protection program, but this is along the same vein: Link (pops)

Pretty much what I came here to say. It would be remarkably dumb to tell the world just where you were sending this family.... Probably what they did.

Or maybe they never left the UK to begin with, and the incident mentioned in this article was made up as a distraction.

It's worth it for the irony buff. "We're going to save you from English criminals by sending you to an English penal colony..."

Relevance of 'Australian'?

OK - so they were in Australia, but would it have been fine and dandy if it was, say, a Belgian?

Australian dollars, US dollars will soon be handy for wallpapering and toilet paper dispensers.

I work for a major yearbook publishing company, and we have schools request that we remove certain children's photos from yearbooks because they are in the program. It's really sad. These kids have no "regular" life, just always in the shadows.

His cover was actually blown in a prior incident at the same supermarket, when he was observed explaining to a grocery clerk that ar-u-gu-la is a veg-e-ta-ble.
