A little oversight would be nice, thank you. You know, a panel of individuals to watch over all that cash? Thanks.

Nah, the're just following their MO of taking whatever GWB says, saying it's wrong and we should do the opposite. That they appear to have spines is merely coincidental in this case.

It's not socialism. They only want to socialize losses. The profits , on the other hand, are still very, very privatized.

not for fannie or freddie, or 80% of AIG. those are pretty much fully socialized at this point.

The majority of the world, as well as the U.S., currently shares the opinion that anything George Bush thinks is a good idea should be scrutinized.

This is a good call by the Democrats no matter how you look at it.

It absolutely should be scrutinized and overseen. On the other hand, it seems like a big, expensive government bailout of some kind is necessary. When Greenspan is saying this situation is a "once in a century" event and Bernanke is telling Congress that if they don't act, we're looking at a 1931 scale bank crash, something has to be done.

Dear lord, this country is in deep shiat if the DEMOCRATS are the ones urging fiscal restraint.

fark it, if even GREENSPAN is saying its time to act,t hen obviously some action si necessary.

That said, I'm with Pelosi on this (how rare is THAT?).
You just can't give Bush and Wall St. a blank check and expect things to turn out well. Not when it was them who got us into the mess in the first place.

Thing is, they keep caving every time they do it.
So in the end, they have no side at all and the Republicans always win.

The things they want:

1.) Independent oversight.
2.) Some sort of protection for the homeowners that were misled into this crisis.
3.) The money not to go to Executive "Golden Parachute" packages.

Seems fair to me.

Where have you been? We started doing military operations in Iran a couple of weeks ago expressly without the permission of the Iranian government, and it retaliated by saying that it considered this an act of war. Google news it, man.

Yes, the same Democrats who under Clinton delivered balanced budgets for the first time in thirty years.

As compared to the Republicans, under Reagan and Bush I & Bush II, consistently delivered deficit spending year after year.

Fiscal restraint ain't a Rep or Dem thing. Both overspend, but in different ways.

Better idea.
1. Give the execs a parachute.
2. Put them into a plane.
3. Drop them over that garbage pile in the middle of the Pacific.
4. Let them swim back, they make it back they get their money, they don't then we are better off.

NewportBarGuy: They damn well better nix this plan. Let the markets bleed out their poison. We all take a hit, but it's the only way.

Look, I agree with you in practice. Ok? Most of us do.

The thing is we're WAAAAAY past that. If someone in your family borrows $10,000 from a bank and can't pay it back, yeah I agree, the right thing to do might be to let them live with the consequences of their actions... declare bankruptcy, have their possessions repossessed, etc.

We're so far past that, now, that more drastic measures are the only thing that's going to save the country as a whole. Think about it that way - your neighbor borrowed $500,000 from a loan shark, and if he doesn't pay back, the loan shark is going to kill his family and then all his neighbors. Wallow in the mess that's been made? Or pay the guy off for the greater good?

We can NOT let this crisis go on unattended. Even if "you" aren't going to be hurt - even if you can pay your reasonable mortgage, and there's no financial hardship on your end, if this is allowed to continue after the collapse of AIG, we are headed for some MAJOR bad times. I'm talking 30%+ unemployment, starvation, no jobs, massive layoffs, homelessness, grapes of wrath kind of shiat. And it will affect everyone, make no mistake, this is a worldwide crisis. "You made the bed, you lie in it" only works if the bed is only for one. We all made this bed, and we're all going to lie in it unless drastic measures are taken.

I don't like it any more than you do, but we have to do something.

Isotope 2008-09-21 09:05:02 PM
NewportBarGuy: They damn well better nix this plan. Let the markets bleed out their poison. We all take a hit, but it's the only way.

We all take a hit either way--it's a matter of how we end up afterwards. Perhaps they're betting on us taking our hit and having a more-or-less intact financial system when the dust settles rather than having to build something new from scratch...of course, at this point starting over from scratch looks somewhat appealing.
