You know what they say about guys with big hands, right?

That's right. Big gloves.

Kome [TotalFark] 2008-09-21 06:42:38 PM
The genes that influence the growth of fingers also influence a lot of other things, including behavioral predispositions. There is some support that the length of your fingers is connected to sexual orientation.

On the one hand, it seems all so silly. On the other, evolution doesn't like to create brand new when it can just incorporate new stuff into the existing framework.

What Rain-Monkey said so succinctly. Also, I did not know mice had fingers, a desire to work out at the gym, and prenatal stress. I did not know that.

Nonsense. Every time there are less sunspots, the economy tanks. Right now there are less sunspots.

I have a long-fingered pet mouse who's headed for the gym in 26 minutes and he's really getting a kick out of these replies.

I have very long fingers. One day in college I had just met a woman like 10 second prior when she grabbed my hand and started stroking my fingers and told me never to become a gynecologist because women hate having such long, firm, fingers deep inside them. But she said it in a breathy, porn star sort of way.

And yes, I do like to exercise.

I've heard (don't remember where, nor can I vouch for the credibility for that matter) that finger length/ratio is partially determined by exposure to prenatal testosterone. I can sort of see the connection between testosterone exposure and enthusiasm for physical activity.

WTF?

Is it just me or did the article never say whether short fingers or long fingers tend to correlate with more voluntary exercise?

That was the worst farking article about a research report that I've ever read, and I have read LOTS of them and written more than a few.

swahnhennessy 2008-09-21 07:53:45 PM
It would have helped if the article specified if short or long fingers were indicative of this exercise gene.

Yes, that is obvious, duh.

But wake me up when humans evolve mice. then we can measure the human's mouse to figure out if the human likes to exercise or not.

/where would the mouse grow?

I have freakishly small hands. They are well proportioned... just absolutely tiny. They make boys giggle.

I am trying to be better about exercising. If I want to keep my physique, it'll either be running or giving up bacon. And I don't want to give up bacon :(

I came here to ask the same thing. Long or short? Mine are long, but I'm not highly motivated to exercise. I love exercise once I get going, however.

I have big hands and short, strong fingers. But, I used to love to play soccer, and basketball, for hours on end, until the pain in my joints and back got to being too much. So, essentially, I have nothing. But, I can do this (p)with my stubby fingers.

Doesn't seem to merit a img1.fark.net tag to me.

We are in the middle of an nationwide (and, increasingly, worldwide) obesity epidemic which I suspect (disclaimer: I don't have facts at my fingertips without looking for them) is going to be as big a killer as cancer, if it isn't already.

No one is really sure what the cause of the epidemic is. Yes, on an individual level, it's consuming more calories than are expended. But on a macroscopic level, there must be other social or physiological factors involved. Most likely it's a variety of factors all interacting in a complex way. This is not going to be solved without a mass of primary research.

The point is not to say, "Mice with digits (the article did not say 'fingers') of a certain length exercise less, isn't that fascinating." The point is that you've uncovered evidence that levels of voluntary exercise in mammals are influenced by genetic predisposition. No, correlation is not causation, but correlation does represent strong evidence of the genetic component. Based on this, researchers can start to investigate whether these same mechanisms are present in humans. If a genetic component for exercise avoidance can be identified in a subpopulation of humans, that can be taken into account in tailoring a wellness regimen for those people. If this study cost $100,000 and saves one costly bypass or heart attack, it's paid for itself.

I don't see what's controversial about this.

WFern 2008-09-21 08:14:22 PM
It doesn't say in what way they're connected, so I can only assume that a longer finger length means a higher desire to excercise.

Regardless, I have long fingers of my own and the concept of excercise to me is... well, it's just awful.

I can't imagine the grant for this type of research was particularly large. And the implications of the results (prenatal factors affect something like voluntary exercise rates) is not inconsequential. Most research like this is more valuable for the directions for further research it generates, than the specific results themselves.

But please, by all means, go back to pissing on science.

I once had my palm read... they told me that I am not one to do large amounts of physical labor in my work.. and I have an extremely short fuse...

Both of these turned out to be correct...

I don't believe in "supernatural" palm-readers.. but I wouldn't give this a "stupid" tag

It could be that the same combination of hormones that cause someone to be high strung .. cause them to have thin metacarpel bones compared to joint size
