She won $20,000 from the airline too (probably just to cover her medical bills from the squashing)

Good for her. The airline should have made that woman pay for two seats.

The last plane I was on was to Salt Lake City. I was about 80 pounds overweight. I felt like a total douchebag for overflowing into the next seat.

That was part of my motivation for getting my fat ass to the gym and losing weight.

I've lost 60 pounds (just have 20 more to go) and feel much better. If you're obese, you need to do yourself and society a favor by getting off your ass!

Speaking as an obese person, I have to say that the way the airline SHOULD have fixed this is to squeeze two fat people right next to each other.

This way, there's no telling who's damaging whom, because they're both going to be spilling over onto each other. It is inexcuseable that the flight attendants wouldn't help that woman.

Congrats. I am finally seriously tracking my food intake and energy output and my pants are already less snug after one week, so I'm pretty psyched.

If my alcohol tolerance gets any lower I'll get loopy just kissing someone who's had a drink, so I'll have that going for me too.

It's not so much from the fat woman, it's from trying to fight for room to breathe.

But does being fat weaken all of the following?
* Lungs,
* Eyes,
* Throat,
* Urinary tract,
* Sex organs,
* Women's fertility zone,
* Men's sperm production,
* Digestive organs,
* Bones and joints,
* Skin

I haven't noticed people being fat having charred lungs, a dozen kinds of cancer, and dead immune systems. Nor have I noticed them affecting those around them.

I wonder which one is harder to quit...

That's awesome, man.

I'm a big fat guy who's recently decided to do something about my weight too. I keep putting off going to the gym (I'll start next week, I promise!) but I've been eating healthier for the last two months and have lost 7 lbs already. Once I start excercising (seriously, I'll start tomorrow), I think it should just really start to come off.

I started at about 308, down to 301 now. I hope to be around 240 by next May when I go on a trip to Europe. Do you think that's pretty reasonable? End goal is probably 170ish, but that's likely a ways off.

As a guy, you've got a head start: Because men have higher muscle mass on average than chicks, you WILL lose weight easier. Plus most guys don't have as much of a weakness for chocolate, so that's gotta help.

My husband cut out non-diet soda, occasional trips to mcdonalds and he started taking a half-hour walk about five times per week, and he dropped 30 lbs. If he could do it, anyone can.

GO MAN, GO. GET OUT THERE AND WALK. You don't need a fancy gym. GO!

Lungs-check, Eyes-check (diabetic retinopathy...linked to DM2, linked to being a fat ass), Throat-check (obstructive sleep apnea...look it up), urinary tract-check, GI-check, bones/joints-check, endocrine-check....and this is just the tip of the iceberg...

I've long felt that obesity was a more serious health risk than smoking, and one that's far harder for someone to kick.

How many 80-year-old smokers have you ever seen?

How many 80-year-old 300-pounders have you ever seen?

I rest my case.

Okay, worked health care 30 years. Last 10 in a CCU. Obesity is a problem, no doubt, but in my experience the people I've seen with MI's are usually smokers with a family history of coronary artery disease.
Also according to the BMI most people are at least "overweight" and many "obese" or "morbidly obese".

As a few above have said, I too have lost 80 lbs this year. I am 5'7.5" and now 182 lbs. According to the BMI I should be 160. My wife (and others, including family Dr.) are saying I shouldn't lose anymore. I have a goal of 175.

Have to say I feel much better, and, it was getting a little embarrassing talking to my MI patients about lifestyle changes when I was 265 lbs.
Yo yo dieting over my entire life. Never again.

/Interestingly my johnson seems to be much bigger now too!

Hey most girls do like some guys with a little pudge. I know my girlfriend does since I am not way too skinny to the point where she can easily break me lol.

Hell the past month or so, I've cut back on my eating habits, cut out the fast food joints and so far have lost about 5 to 6 lbs. Hopefully, one day soon I can hit 200 (I'm 235 right now).

Quantumbunny: But does being fat weaken all of the following?

Actually, obesity affects, or compounds diseases that affect, a lot of the things on your list.

* Lungs: pickwickian syndrome

* Eyes: cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration

* Throat: esophageal cancer

* Urinary tract: urinary tract infections, incontinence

* Sex organs: (not going there, ewww)

* Women's fertility zone: amenorrhea, gestational diabetes, birth defects

* Men's sperm production:

* Digestive organs: Gallbladder disease

* Bones and joints: Osteoarthritis.

* Skin: Striae (although it's not exactly life threatning ;)

* Cancer : Colon cancer, rectal cancer, esophageal cancer, kidney cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer. Yep, we've got cancer covered.

----------------------

/A family member (younger than I am) passed away recently due to deep vein thrombosis causing a pulmonary embolism.

/My boss died a few years ago due to lung cancer (he smoked a lot when he was in the navy, he had quit, but it caught up to him in his later years).

Good thing you qualified your statements with the first statement lord.
With the exception of pickwickian (love that name) everything else just about anyone can get, obese or not.

Also, sorry to hear about the family member with DVT and PE. Seen that a few times over my career. I am assuming you said that because he/she was obese. Interestingly, most of the DVT/PE patients (serious ones) were not obese, and distinctly young and female.
Just my experience anyway.

Yeah, but what you'll generally see is statements like "obesity doubles the risk of $x" or "obesity increases the severity of $y".

most of the DVT/PE patients (serious ones) were not obese, and distinctly young and female.

Young, female, and overweight (the rest of the family is fairly skinny).

Actually, there is a fat pad on the front of a guy's pelvic bone that does affect perceived -- or, um, functional -- length. From the longitudinal sample I've studied of one, I'd say the gain/loss is most noticeable when BMI is around 33ish.
