Well there's no reason NOT to vote for Palin-McCain now, right?

The daughter of an Irgun thug.

Tzipi Livni, who is a member of Kadima and a former cabinet member of Sharon's. She's thought to be more moderate, which would be helpful for the region.

Those connections will be hard to avoid in Israeli politics for a while.

Yeah, that and the whole head negotiator thing might help with the Palestine issue.

Yes, she's shown a willingness to open lines of communication. My comment about her father aside, she may well be a great Prime Minister.

Tzipi Livni's installation is a key step for a greenlight to bomb Iran. Olmert was discredited by the Lebannon fiasco but Livni can step in and work with the Bush/Cheney administration to get us stuck in before our elections.

Then the republicans can spin it so that Israel is on the brink of destruction as Iran retaliates, and voting democrat would leave our staunchest ally defenseless.

I can just see the photo-op of Sarah Palin and Tzipi Livni surveying the Holy Land, as f-16s fly overhead, McCain somberly reflecting in the background, Lieberman whispering in his ear.

If she can't form a government in 42 days, hardliners are widely favored to retake government. It's kind of like the inverse of the beginning of the Ford administration after Nixon!

That said, we didn't need this right now. Nobody needed this right now. Not even Iran or the Palestinians who could make use of the instability, even they're in the awkward position of 2nd fiddle to the world economic crisis.

Anarchofascist 2008-09-21 04:56:17 AM
Tzipi is inviting Meretz into the coalition. This is a very good sign, in my view.

I wouldn't be surprised if ultimately there's a wholesale party realignment (again) to prevent Netanyahu from getting a plurality in the next elections.

Paving the way for an attack on Iran, eh?

Palin's church might get the end-times it so desperately wants.

Seriously, can we just fence off the whole "cradle of civilization" before it becomes the grave of civilization?

Yeah, that would be fun. Then we'd get hardliners on both sides and the place really would turn into a parking lot, completely without us or Iran getting involved.

If he comes back, he'll come to the U.S. and be Zombie Reagan's veep candidate. Terry Schiavo can be the campaign manager.

She was often criticized under the Sharon administration for being too dovish.

Palin's church is NOT Christian Zionist. They don't believe that a reconstructed Jewish Temple will bring about the Armageddon, their goal is to convert Jews in Israel to Christianity.

Nevermind Palin's church--John Hagee's megachurch hears every day how good Christians are under divine command to protect and defend Israel. I hope I live to see the day that foreign policy isn't so driven by Judeo-Christian eschatology in America.

HowlingFrog - I'm not an expert on internal Israeli politics, but I did follow Livni's comments closely during the Lebanon war (she reminded me of Dee Dee Myers) and there was plenty of hawkish language and towing the party line with respect to that war. I would be interested to hear some sensible policy from her.

But the facts in both Israel and America are that the hardcore conservatives are inexorably linked, by religion, by each political system which needs the other to a certain extent, and by the realpolitik on the ground.

Our own interests as Americans who want to avoid any more foreign wars should dictate that we watch what happens in our 'only ally' in the middle east very closely, when we are at such a critical point in our own election process.

Maybe they won't need a well-co-ordinated strike against Iran, as I had previously thought would be necessary. Maybe a skirmish, a little wag the dog, a lot of hyperbole and a frightened America will give them what they want.

Another American administration that will let Israel do what it wants, without question, and a pissed off beligerent Iran to continue making threats to justify our presence in the middle east.

I doubt it. I think Likud will get a narrow win, and they'll have to work with either Labour or Kadima to form a government. It will be funny when in the end it's Bibi who ends up dividing Jerusalem.

Tzipi(diminutive of Tziporah which means bird thus the nickname the bird-brain) AKA Zippy the Pinhead is a lackey of Mammy Condoleezza and can't lift her hand unless her mammy pulls the strings.
Number one she has 6 weeks to form a coalition, to succeed she needs the cooperation of the current parties Labor led by Peewee Herman look alike Ehud Barak, and Shas led by Eli my scruples can be bought Yishai as well as the Old Fart Pensioners party led by Mr. Magoo look alike former spy Rafi Eitan.
Ehud I am not a crook Olmert was not discredited by the Lebanon War, he was discredited by 6 police investigations of fraud, bribery, and other charges.
So by the time she even attamps to assemble a coalition and be the next PM American Elections will have taken place, so do not think that any thing will happen with Iran unless Dubya has a premature ejaculation and pushes a button by mistake.
