Bikini-clad tourists may have to cover up if a law is passed across Indonesia.

Before reading article: Yaaaaaay.
After reading article: Awwwwwww.

One time I was in Central Java wearing a tank top with tattoo's & nipple ring showing. I was "asked" to return to my hotel and cover up. My wife (an Indonesian) was back at the hotel with her childhood pals said "I told you, this isn't Bali you have to wear a shirt"

apparently tank top = underwear there.
was escorted back to the hotel

I am confused and distressed about how nipple rings show when you're wearing a tank top.

I spent a week in Bali. My roomate was there with me. When we would go to breakfast, he would try to leave our hotel room without a shirt. I'd tell him it was culture.

"Dude" he would say. "We're in the islands!"

I would then explain that it wasn't 'the island's' that he was thinking of.

Bali. Very conservative. But an awesome place to spend a week.

This would be just the shot in the arm that Thailand's tourism sector needs right now.

I'm fine with this as long as the island of Bikini bans all Balis.

This is a surprise to me. I spent a month there earlier this year and I didn't detect too much flak from the locals over bodily exposure. Many girls go topless.
The Balinese would be silly to pass a restriction like that. Tourism is how many people there make a living. Anger the tourists and they'll eventually find another hotspot where they are free to wear bathing suits of a dental floss-like design.

/I recommend Brazil, baby

Well, it's their country, it's their right to tell us westerners to GTFO. It's also our right to not give them any of our money.

You have to look at the big picture here, folks. With provocative clothing, people might end up getting aroused and HAVING SEX!

Monophtalmos: This smells of Muslim shennanigans.

This. If it's an Indonesia-wide thing, I'm sure Islamists have a hand in it. I haven't been to Bali, but my friend lived there and they do feel an encroachment by Islamists onto their Hindu-Buddhist culture.

Hindu-Buddhist cultures rock. They get public holidays like every other week since they celebrate both religions.

Frankly, I wouldn't exactly complain if I saw fewer bikini-clad Aussies and more Balinese in Bali.

DepecheSpork 2008-09-21 05:42:08 AM
According to TFA, it's not up to the Balinese. The gov't of Indonesia wants people to stop being sexy. Bali is just one island in Indonesia. An island that welcomes scantily clad tourists.

The law also includes poetry and music... it might be the booze but this brings to mind a soulless person in a snowsuit.

Religious extremists don't care about economies. They believe that by being moral, their gods will shower them with wealth. Any economic downturn is indicative of the gods' wrath.

Which is really convenient for avoiding responsibility and maintaining control.

Different cultures, different laws.

It's not like they're advocating 50 year old men marrying 11 year old girls. They're apparently gay friendly, if that matters. I mean, if you think about it, most people look better dressed. Even if not attractively.

Let them be different. It makes the world an interesting place.

Still, I don't understand how wearing a shirt on the beach of a country near the equator could be at all enjoyable. I gots Irish skin and sweat at 60F. To me, you might as well be wearing:

Huh? It's not about "letting them be different".

If you had RTFA, then you'd know that the government of Bali is against this move, however they are forced to comply because Bali is part of Indonesia, and that government is run by Islamic farktards.

Well its not their country. The Balinese have lost control over their island to the Indonesians. Maybe its for Australia time to liberate them the way they liberated East Timor.

Honestly, the Indonesian people are pretty flexible with tourists as it is now...

They pretty much have 2 sets of laws, one for tourists and one for non-muslim locals.

They are really pretty easy going; if I wasn't allowed to drink, but the tourists were, I'd be pissed.

When I was in Djakarta many years ago I found that the magazines at the local stand looked a bit odd. On closer examination I found that the bikini girls on the cover had all had their tops and bottoms drawn over with a heavy black marker. Apparently, that was somebody's job there: drawing over naughty bits.

I'd like to make a huge penis-shaped Zeppelin and fly it back and forth over Djakarta all day.

This goes against the far more ancient religion of Bali.

Been to Bali before they killed 200 people, 3rd world dump. They don't want westerners there so why would you go? Do they have to blow up another 200 before we get the message. You want to relax and wear a bikini - go to Hawaii or the Aussie beaches!

This. It'll happen soon enough. After the little world war gets sorted out. I spect Muslims will lose real estate for their belligerencies.

Re-read the article. You're right, Bali is a part of Indonesia. So they can follow Indonesian laws and Muslim rule. They are probably against the law in part because it will scare money away. And probably because they are influenced by their bevy of Westerners. Why are the Indonesian government farktards exactly? Because they are strict about the dress code? Yeah, Muslim countries can be like that. So what. There are plenty of other beaches. Doesn't Australia have one giant beautiful coastline? Aren't there a hundred other islands in Micronesia? Why does the entire world have to share American values? Leave 'em alone.

Anyways, what phrawgh and mavrikgoose said.

The Balinese are some of the nicest and most freindly people on the planet, but, if you never stepped foot out of that shiathole Kuta you would only have met Javanese.

The Balinese themselves are an island of really nice Hindus stuck in an ocean of unfriendly Muslims which is the rest of Indonesia.

This is why the the rest of Indonesia loves to hate them. They love them for money they generate, but hate them because they know full well the reason why everyone thinks Bali is a paradise is because it is like Indonesia without the Indonesians.

The vast majority of trouble makers, prostitutes, dealers and general unpleasant people in the tourist hotspots are Javanese. The bombers were also Javanese.

If you read the article the Balinese are actually protesting AGAINST this law being passed. The quote used in the headline is misleading. The person was saying that they DON'T think that this law is right because Balinese have a different view on this than the rest of Indonesia.

The Bill, which could be passed in weeks, criminalises all public acts and material capable of raising sexual desires or violating "community morality", including poetry and music.

That is a very vague law here...

Funny thing is, in some parts of tropical Australia, we have these deadly jellyfish which kill you when they sting you, so there is beachwear out there which is basically the same as the "burquini" while being purely for practical purposes.

What's my point? Meh, don't know lol. Just that the burquinis reminded me of the box jellyfish outfits. Pretty much exactly the same except without the "skirt bit" around the waist. Although I guess then it probably fails the burquini test - can't have the shape of the inner thigh, butt, and genital area being so clearly defined I'd imagine. Since it's all meant to be about modesty, the clearly defined female hips and arse is probably too much.

/ummmmmm, female hips and arse....
