(SeattlePI) Spiffy There's a 1/4 mile of textured road in Lancaster, CA that plays the William Tell Overture when driven over at 55mph. But, the city is repaving it due to noise complaints from neighbors (LGT article; video/audio in first post)   (seattlepi.nwsource.com) divider line 122

Ya messed up that headline a bit.. it doesn't HAVE to be a civic. I live right around there so i've gotten to go over it several times now and it's pretty spiffy indeed. I'm sure our whole community is pretty pissed at those whiney neighbors. Kill joys. It's one of only 3 in the entire world.

Pink4Flower [TotalFark] 2008-09-21 01:47:38 AM
feedle: Agreed. A video would be even better.

There are a few videos of it on youtube. Just search for musical road lancaster, ca

I've never heard of that ... and have determined that we need more of these. Many more.

That was pretty cool. I wonder if it sounds different depending on the make & model of your vehicle.

Cool concept however.

nashBridges: And I'll admit to being a killjoy. I helped our county write an ordinance for the maximum decibel level a car could emit after 11 pm because someone (I live way out on a farm in the country) who lives 15 miles up the road was prone to driving a truck with a loud muffler and his radio blaring on his way back from the bar.

Couldn't you just give him a ticket for the muffler?

Sun God [TotalFark] 2008-09-21 03:35:53 AM
I think I would prefer that to leaf blowers, lawn mowers, and those really noisy garbage trucks which squeak and squeal and hoot and hiss.

daychilde [TotalFark] 2008-09-21 03:38:40 AM
uh... no, it does NOT play the William Tell Overture. It plays some sort of weird wrong-note melody that's moderately similar... (Either that, or the driver sucks)

Regardless, it's farking SWEET.... just not the advertised tune. :/

Neurochemist 2008-09-21 03:50:35 AM
Damn -- that is spiffy, I'm surprized it isn't more well-known.

nashBridges: He drives slow because he's drunk and his truck and his radio are so farking loud he still wakes us up every weekend at 4 am. He will be coming by in a few minutes. I'll try to tape it.

Well then get him on DUI. As much as I hate the DUI laws in this country, this guy seems to deserve it.

Either that or let the air out of his tires and let him trash his rims.

Megain [TotalFark] 2008-09-21 05:57:20 AM
nashBridges: All we want is a lower radio volume. No one cares about him driving home from the bar drunk at 4am. Why he has to blare the stereo is beyond me.

the cognizant dissonance is strong in this one. so let me make sure i get this... nobody cares that's he's driving drunk, nobody is even there to enforce that law, and your solution is to push for another, more trivial law

call to 911: yeah, i'd like to report a drunk driver
911 dispatcher: meh, we're understaffed

call to 911: hey! a truck just drove by with a loud stereo!
911 dispatcher: oh shiat! someone will be right there!

Funny, isn't it? It's not like your monitor is any brighter than it usually is, but I felt blinded by it as well.

Sad that the project failed, but couldn't they have picked a stretch of highway outside of Death Valley or somewhere with no nearby residents? Isn't like 90% of California a desolate f*cking wasteland? Next time groove your grooves out in the desert.

As much as I love this idea, isn't there a slight chance that more accidents will occur as drivers focus intently on their speedometer so as to keep 'in tune?'

Now it will play the William Tell Overture, but more quietly. When the Massachusetts Turnpike was under construction traffic was diverted onto the shoulder. The paved-over rumble strip still rumbled.

Dicky B 2008-09-21 07:20:10 AM
They should digitize a voice, and have it so you could only start to understand it at about 85mph (too slow, too low pitched, or something). At 100mph, it'd say "SLOW DOWN ASSCLOWN" or something.

/I dunno, it's 6am, and I haven't slept yet

Mr. Right 2008-09-21 07:22:58 AM
Which part of the overture did the road play? A quarter mile at 55 is less than 20 seconds, the overture is about 10 minutes or so, if memory serves.

Nightjars 2008-09-21 07:25:38 AM
They should put it on a highway near a commerical/industrial part of town so there's no neighbors to complain. The idea is awesome, though I have to say that if it actually is loud enough to keep people up at night, then its not so spiffy.

dweezil101: have the neighbors ever heard of turning on a fan? Pretty much blocks most noise.

It most likely won't block that. I live 5 miles from the east end of the Ohio turnpike. I can hear semis crossing the rumble strips as they come into the toll booths every day. It's not loud, but if the only thing going is the window fans, you still hear it.

By the way, How you doin

Also would be very cool.

Shouldn't Honda be paying to repave the road and not the county?

This. If that's supposed to be the William Tell Overture, then Honda needs to get their road tuned.

phalaeo: Not that I love speed limits, but that would be an awesome way to get drivers to slow down. Whoever thought of that is a farking genius.

There was a road in Washington DC that did this in the 1950s. It went "wuh-wuh-wuh" like a rumble strip if you were at the speed limit, but went "Slow Down" if you were going too fast.

There's stretches of the Trans Canada highway through the prairies that make you want to jam a screwdriver in your brain from boredom. This would be an excellent addition to prevent said screwdriver thoughts.

nashBridges: Pink4Flower: I'm sure our whole community is pretty pissed at those whiney neighbors. Kill joys. It's one of only 3 in the entire world.

It's cool, I'll give you that. If someone lives next to it? Probably sucks ass.

And I'll admit to being a killjoy. I helped our county write an ordinance for the maximum decibel level a car could emit after 11 pm because someone (I live way out on a farm in the country) who lives 15 miles up the road was prone to driving a truck with a loud muffler and his radio blaring on his way back from the bar.

The ordinance limited the noise level to 115 decibels at 300 feet. Unfortunately, that guy didn't exceed that. It makes me wonder what would, since he was loud as shiat.

115 decibels risks damaging your hearing within 15 minutes, so if that was the sound level at 300 feet that would suggest the driver would have to be in significant pain from the loudness of the noise before that would triggered.
