(CNN) Obvious Sarah Palin will meet with Hamid Karzai in New York next week to help bolster her foreign policy credentials. Plus they're both in charge of drug and gun-filled third world countries, so they should be able to hit it right off   (politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com) divider line 180

Meeting with one foreign leader after you've already been called out as having no credentials won't cut it

How does Karzai feel about being used as a cheap political prop?

Sarah, all the meetings in the world won't convince us that you're ready for primetime.

FTA:
"But as for foreign policy, you know, I think that I am prepared, and I know that on January 20th, if we are so blessed as to be sworn into office as your president and vice president, certainly we'll be ready," she told a questioner. "I'll be ready."

I would really like to see how she delivered that line. Is she trying to convince other people of her readiness? Or is she trying to convince herself?

A little from column A, A little from column B...

The best part was how right after that, she basically said, "Quiz me," and McCain immediately jumped on a mic and changed the subject.

I don't care as long as I don't hear about her butchering his name. Lest I throw stones from a glass house I'll ask: is it officially Karz-eye or Karz-ay and is it Hah-meed or Hah-mid? BBC World seems to prefer Hah-mid Karz-eye, but that's far from definitive.

It's Karz-eye. I took a class from his old English teacher, who actually brought him to the university to receive an honorary degree, and he pronounced it that way. I think it's Hah-meed, but the first name I am not as sure of.

What a neat question. If he says no, then you sure showed him. If he says yes, then he's lying because he just looked Karzai up on the internet. There's no answer that can't be spun to make you correct.

The meeting is part of a larger effort by the McCain campaign to bolster Palin's foreign policy credentials in the face of criticism from Democrats questioning her preparedness for the Vice Presidency.

Do they really think the American people are that dense? Sitting down and talking to Karzai doesn't give her foreign policy credentials, any more than my having a conversation with Ken Burns makes me a documentary filmmaker.

I would be surprised that anyone bothering to post in a Fark politics forum at this ungodly hour on a weekend would NOT know who Karzai was. Its not like he's a obscure or historical political figure, since they U.S. is still fighting an entire war to keep and put him there.

saintstryfe 2008-09-21 03:26:24 AM
From wiki.org:

"From 1979 to 1983, Karzai took a postgraduate course in political science at Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. He then returned to work as a fund-raiser by supporting anti-Soviet Mujahideen in Afghanistan during the Soviet intervention for the rest of the 1980s. After the fall of Najibullah's Soviet-backed government in 1992, he served as Deputy Foreign Minister in the government of Burhanuddin Rabbani."

So... what exactly are they going to talk about? "In 1983 I was prepairing for a career in public service going to a university in India, what were you doing Governor Palin?"

"Getting ready for my Beauty Pagent, enjoying Mooseburgers, you know, the usual."

"Right, you're an idiot, aren't you?"

"OH yeah you betcha der."

If we had an informed and educated electorate, then rushing her into a photo-op meeting with Karzai would immediately invalidate all the McCain campaign's claims that she's more than ready to tackle international affairs.

Since we don't, she'll be anointed by Fox News as the second coming of Margaret Thatcher.

Karzai sometime speaks his mind. I wonder if he'll use this to try and make a statement. It would be really funny if he walked out of the meeting or something.

I'll bet 5 bucks he'd much rather deal with Obama and his group than McCain's group for the next 4 years.

Yes, really.

When speaking farsi and saying his name, it would be pronounced:

If you're pronouncing it slowly, and fully enunciating: Ha-meade Car-zah-ee

If you're talking fast, it would be: Haa-meade Carz-eye.
