Ok, if the Bad Guys are building farkING SUBMARINES, then we need to seriously rethink our war on drugs strategy.

F*cking subs. Jesus H. Christ. And we're spending how many billions of dollars to stop them and they can STILL build a f*cking FLEET of subs to move drugs around!

yesss....OR, the interdiction part of the strategy this refers to is working so well, the BAD GUYS have to come up with new ways to transport

not really a submarine, it seems the top of the boat is above water.

That's sub crazy shiat right there.

FTA: The Coast Guard and the drug czar support legislation to impose stiff penalties for operating a semi-sub on the open seas.

Yay thought crime. So if I was just a crazy rich guy who wanted to build something goofy like a sub or a semi sub, I'd automatically be a drug dealer and I'd go to prison even though I had zero connection to drugs.

Um. No offense there, friendly neighbours to the south , but you should be happy they weren't full of something more dangerous than drugs. Something like Colombians.

Mr Logo 2008-09-21 03:21:18 AM
FTFA: The vessels' low profile makes them extraordinarily hard to detect, either visually or by radar. Intelligence played a role in the two most recent busts, officials said.

I would hope that there aren't any terrorists using these subs to attack America or anything.

You would think they'd spring for actual submarines...I can imagine at least some traffickers could afford one.

Tsar_Bomba1 2008-09-21 03:42:37 AM
I'm surprised they just don't buy some surplus Russian subs...

Then again those have a tendency to sink/torpedo cookoff...

10-4 good buddy. I've got a 10-2 on ya. Could you give me a 10-93? 10-50, 10-23. 10-34, 10-34, Coast Guard approaching. Sorry 'bout the 10-11 there. We shoulda done a 10-3. Catch ya on the flip side. Out.

Our boys better be careful messing with these guys... I understand the smugglers are working on new weapons, too. Just one of their designs...

Let's just hope they don't (or hope that they do) buy one of those swedish subs the U.S navy has been unable to find over month and month of war games. Then the cocaine will be flowing like honey!

'Several sophisticated smugglers' semi-submersible submarines seized at sea and sunk.' said Rear Admiral Biggus Dickus.

I don't think using semi subs to transport drugs is anything new. I remember reading about some guy who builds these things to order for drug traffickers. We spend billions fighting TWOD, and the drug guys spend chump change on inventive methods of transport. We will never win this war. Never.

GaidinBDJ [TotalFark] 2008-09-21 07:26:57 AM
Actually they got caught using a sub to smuggle across the Canadian border in New York. That was over 10 years ago.

With your name that is an awesome observation!
It would be kinda funny if drug runners did actually start buying old attack subs. The Coast Guard and Police would have a tough time with that! At least until a proper warship showed up.

i would buy an old german sub if i could. i also like drugs....hmmm

Why is the U.S. Coast guard busting boats 370 nautical miles southwest of Guatemala?

If they build a wooden boat, wouldn't that be invisible to radar?

Dumbass Neighbors to the north.

Colombians(speaking as one) are not dangerous, and in generally some of the friendliest people walking around this planet. I suggest you visit Colombia, as many Canadians often do and make asses of themselves trying to by weed and coke in public.

Also add Bolivia and Peru to your list.

One of these semi-submersible's is on display at the Naval Station in Key West which is the headquarters of the JIATF-South. The "sub" is basically a wooden frame covered in fine wire mesh onto which concrete is sprayed. The entire boat rides underwater except for a control house which is about 4 feet square and two feet high. Exhaust & air intake nozzles are on top of the control house. The entire boat presents a very low / or no radar signature and they tend to travel at night so they won't be spotted by anybody. Other than visual, about the only way it can be detected is with HFSWR.

Satanic_Hamster 2008-09-21 10:46:51 AM
Should just let the Navy use these guys for target practice.

Trained, yes. The Navy declassified that a long time ago.

Hooked on smack? That's from 'Johnny Mnemonic', dude.

A true submarine has tanks that are flooded with water to fully submerge, and the water is blown out to surface. It looks like these don't have that, are just very heavy boats, so heavy that most of it, except for air intakes etc are below water. Like the Monitor.
