It only costs that much because it was originally McCain's. He bought it while in Siam for over 5 years.

80k for a stick in the ground?

That's a sound financial investment we can believe in!

Can a mod come along and explain why there have been three Vermont threads in a row. Are you from Vermont of something? Is anyone on the east coast even still awake? Inquiring minds want to know.

Well the last one got destroyed by lightning in 1955, and they can't raise the funds to save it!

Personally, the cost on this seems to suggest very shady business practices. I think they are getting burned.

The sucky part is where it takes a 5-man crew and a front-end loader to rearrange it for daylight savings time twice a year.

From the article:

wcax.images.worldnow.com

It cost $80,000 for that? Holy crap. Someone is getting fleeced here.

That figure better include the cost of land, bribes to the local mayor and construction company, full catered meals for everybody on the project, replanting the forest in the background of the picture, etc.

From the looks of it the big chunks of rock are the hour markers, the thing in the middle is where the needle will go... it'll probably be pretty big for the shadow to cast that far to hit the bigger rocks.

Still a waste of money... what's next? a $50,000 abacus made out of gold & platinum?

Destined for a successful career in politics...building roads to nowhere, bailing out dying savings&loans, fighting wars in obscure lands that nobody's ever heard of...with big chunks of rock.

Wait till he hears the Russians have a rock so big it could crush a neighborhood. Then he'll go and design one bigger and get hired to be the Gub'mint Boss of Big Rocks.

FTA YOU are the stick, the sundial in the plywood you stand on.

atlas spanked 2008-09-21 05:18:48 PM
It's not just a sundial;
it's a 'public art display.'

aka overpriced, oversized schlock that the self-styled 'creative class' foists upon taxpayers through arts council pork and, in this case, child labor.
