Which gives me a good excuse to dust these off again.

Holy shiat, that was really neat!

Raiden333 [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 09:18:33 PM
I've seen a lot of optical illusions in my time and that is definitely one of the most entertaining.

PseudoNic 2008-09-20 09:19:16 PM
Very cool.

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 09:23:50 PM
That's cool. I'd thought I'd already seen just about every optical illusion imaginable, but that's a new one to me.

Kome [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 09:38:06 PM
If anyone is interested in learning about this, it's called the opponent-process theory of vision. A more familiar term might be negative afterimage. Been studied quite extensively, but damn it's always cool to experience.

Nicely done!

And-1 2008-09-20 10:56:10 PM
Really? I mean, sure, it is cool and all, but did you people not see this - and learn the biological theory of it - in 4th grade?

And-1: Really? I mean, sure, it is cool and all, but did you people not see this - and learn the biological theory of it - in 4th grade?

Well yeah, but it was always something simple like the American flag. I'd not seen one so...extensive(?)

dletter [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 11:09:10 PM
Weird, I don't see the colors, even after staring for a minute.

/of course, I can't see that naked chick spin counter clockwise either.

shanrick [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 11:22:42 PM
That was defiately shopped. I've seen a few pixels in my time.

That one took me a while. Basically, you just stare at her spinning, and zone out a bit, and *BAM*, she's spinning in the other direction.

Weirder still, it's hard to get her to spin clockwise again.

I think this has done some permanent damage to my eyes. It's been ten minutes and I'm still seeing everything in color.

Very cool!

Me too. Wowza!

crayz 2008-09-20 11:34:22 PM
That was amazing

crayz 2008-09-20 11:36:00 PM
The best is if you keep your eyes where the black dot was, the color slowly fades, but if you let your eyes scan the image it flips to black & white immediately. Freaky

impaler [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 11:37:09 PM
Of interest to us in this illusion are only the central pieces of each of the three visible sides. Two sides are lit and have a brown tile in the middle. The side in shadow has a yellow tile in the middle.

Or does it?

Use the colour picker in any imaging software and you'll find all three central tiles are exactly the same colour.

Yeah. This effect is much better when they keep the black dot to focus on in the color image

This. Yawn.

Neurochemist 2008-09-21 12:39:12 AM
Thats wierd.. I can seen the color image before staring at the dot whatsoever. I had to read the directions several times because the image kept distracting me and I was sure I was misreading something.

I starred at the black dot for 30 seconds and still seen the same color image.

I lose.

nashBridges: Why do the circles come back if you blink?

That illusion uses the same principle as the original illusion of this thread: the human eye is not very sensitive to color. (in fact, jpg and video compression uses this phenomenon to increase compression). If viewed that circle illusion through a black and white camera, you wouldn't see any circles at all. The circles have a different color than the background, but they have the same value (value means the same brightness if viewed in black and white). The circles become invisible, because your cones (the color sensitive part of your eye) get 'tired' easily. When you blink, they rest a little bit. Also, you might move your eye a little when you blink.

Neurochemist 2008-09-21 12:43:02 AM
Haha -- thanks Impaler... if you hadn't posted that I would of thought I was doomed.

Screw my works IE-6 for failing to flip the image once my mouse rolls over. If you ask me, it serves them right that I spend all night farking instead of working.

impaler: the human eye is not very sensitive to color. (in fact, jpg and video compression uses this phenomenon to increase compression).

Actually, regular broadcast TV uses this fact as well.

Your TV has something like a 640X480 resolution for black and white. The 'color' resolution is around 320X480. I.e. 1/2 the black and white resolution.

It's a real genius system. The signal is super-imposed in such a way, that it is backwards compatible with old black and white sets. On top of that, the new color information is broadcast at a much lower resolution, and since the eye isn't sensitive, it doesn't notice it's at a lower resolution.

As for the colored image trick, you can do that with any color picture. Just invert the colors in the main one, and make the other one grayscale.

Yes, but I can still enjoy the effect. I also know how most special effects in movies are done, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying them.

Can any of you photoshop experts take the pictures and spread the color out much like when a kids who didn't color inside the lines? The odd thing is the resulting picture may appear about the same. I've seen it on simpler images, but this one looks like a great one to mess with.

Meh...not that impressive. Besides..it requires you to look at the same part of the image the whole time. My eyes tend to wander too much (like...toward the woman's chest...)

I say we investigate. Know a good PI?

Studio Ghibli 2008-09-21 08:38:50 AM
You're right.

That was the coolest optical illusion I saw in that span of thirty seconds.

In other news, I'd like my thirty seconds back.

Le Grand Danois 2008-09-21 09:23:06 AM
Cappalotti: You are an asshat. I finally get over the trauma from back in 2000 when I saw my first "optical illusion flashes into a screaming alien/ghost" thing and then you do that. At least it wasn't a ghoul... but still startled me.

Seriously, I treaded very gently through the links in this thread, making sure all the comments after weren't calling it awful. I'm so weary of "illusions" on the internet. Until yours.

I need more therapy now.
