(Japan Times) Ironic Japanese military struggles to curb high suicide rate, a problem that has haunted them for years. One wonders how this got to be such a big problem anyway   (search.japantimes.co.jp) divider line 58

Foreigners with even slightly different skin tones were always depicted and described as black or "dark", reality didn't enter in to it.

JimmyCarter'sSecondTerm 2008-09-20 04:00:16 PM
The way I understand it is in the military once you fark up and stop advancing in rank your career is basically over. In Japan people who would not otherwise become successful join the military to try to make a great carreer out of that. When it does not work out for them they feel like they have no other way out and do not want to dishonor their families by accomplishing nothing with the rest of their lives.

The suicides are probably often more graphic than civilian suicides. I remember reading that Japanese people usually kill themselves with carbon monoxide poisoning from burning charcoal grills in their cars so as to not have to burden the person who has to clean up. Military people can probably get ahold of guns or grenades to do it.

That, or jumping in front of a train, which is decidedly troublesome to tens of thousands of people...

I'm interested in how yall distinguish between the Kamikaze who follow the Bushido code and dirty Islamic suicide bombers?

The Kamikaze are still respected in Japanese culture; Gundam glorified this pretty regularly a decade ago when I watched it.

Many terrorist suicide bombings target enemy military or police targets, at least lately.

I like the Japanese and am inclined to give them a pass on this, but the trick is not to look like a hypocrite.

Top of my head reason: Kamikazes tended to go after actual military targets, not civilian ones. (Didn't they?)

Reyito 2008-09-20 04:22:26 PM
Kamikaze's also didnt' hide in a crowd and magicaly "there we are!"

They didn't dress up as passenger aircraft and pretend to be other than what they were.

---------------------------------

Bushido comes with "stated intent"... i.e. your target knows you are there, and is an opponent/can react to you. Bushido did not involve putting a bomb under your jacket and mixing in with the servants.

keloyd: I'm interested in how yall distinguish between the Kamikaze who follow the Bushido code and dirty Islamic suicide bombers?

When asked military pilots that trained to be kamikazes were outraged by the similarities drawn by pro-Islamists between themselves and Muslims on a jihad. They explained how kamikazes wore uniforms, flew in identifiable combat aircraft and attacked military targets, Muslims on a jihad hide behind women and children and target civilians.

I don't know why the Japanese brass is concerned with the suicides, per se. They should just figure out how to make it so that all these military men stop dishonoring their families.

There you have it folks, everything is the United States fault. high suicide rates in Japan, the inability fo the EU to agree upon a Constitution, the dispute between Canda and Denmark over Hans island, the Viking conquests/invasions, PMS and hang nails can all be blamed on something the US did a century or more ago.

"One of the fondest expressions around is that we can't be the world's policeman. But guess who gets called when somebody needs a cop." -- Colin Powel

All this hate America stuff is just a easy out from a having to accept responsibility for their own problems. The US did create a culture of suicide in Japan anymore than it creatd one in Swedne when they had a high rate, but it does give you chance to vent your ideolgoical hatred and gives you street cred with the hate America crowd.

The obvious solution is to turn Afghanistan back over the Taliban or see if the Russians want back in. See if we can find one of Saddam's relaltives to take control of Iraq, find a way to recoup or money spent on Tsuamni relief (of course we probably caused the Tsumani according to you), Let Slobo and the Serbs have Balkans back, the world certainly does not need the 60% of the total food aid provided from such an evilgroup as US. Those billions fighting AIDs in Africa (of course we caused AIDS also) they certainly do want to accept help from us we need to leave them alone.

Its alot more ambiguous in a asymmetrical conflict, as much of the time any police/military targets will be in close proximity to civilians. Like someone said earlier, the Japanese Kamikazis flew warplanes against warships. Soldiers undertaking missions from which they dont expect to return is a fairly old occurrence.

That's not the same as either kamakazi or suicide bombing, in which the death of the soldier is an integral part of the act. An attack against overwhelming odds in which you will almost certainly die is fundamentally different than an attack in which your death is part of the tactics employed.

I disagree. One has been glorified in movies and literature for thousands of years (not movies, obviously), but that's the only real difference. From a "suicide is a mortal sin" standpoint, there might be a difference, but certainly not a big one.
