Dementia is a sad thing to see in action. If only there were a way that we could find a cure?

McCain does have a point. Name me 1 trillion things that science has done for mankind. I bet you can't do it!

This reasoning is why the LHC is now the largest supercollider in the world and is in a foreign nation. There are no immediate benefits, and it was killed here for being too wasteful. Of course, it could lead to quantum computing, better and more resourceful AI, and learning more about the universe, but hey, MY TAXES MIGHT GO UP $4 A YEAR!

Just think about one of McCain's tired anecdotes, about the "spending $X million for studying migration and mating habits of bears." It gets a chuckle from everyone because who in their right mind would need something so ridiculous?

Unless you realize that vast regions of the US have to deal with bears and their migratory habits, combined with the fact that we don't want to accidentally bring yet another large mammal to extinction, because it takes EVILUTION a few million years to put another one together (God has been dropping the ball on creating new species lately). But yeah, keep touting the fact that science is wasteful. It wins elections....

Also, a little pro-tip for the "pork watchers." The Defense Department has had many scandals in it regarding taxpayer paying billions for weapon systems that don't work. Maybe we should start watching the how the military spends their money on luxury airliners while underfunding treatment for PTSD.

Considering whom this country voted into office in 2004, I think we've had a brain drain for quite some time now. :(

So,, who gets to determine what research has value and what doesn't and what criteria are they going to use in order to do that?

Palin's litmus test of Jesus worthy endeavors?

hubiestubert [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 02:23:32 PM
Science is over rated. What this country needs is more faith, and more values.

Oh, those kooky intelleticals and their "science" and "research" and "investments in infrastructure." Don't they know that Jeebus will free us from our rootless desire for things to be "better" than our ancestors? If you've got enough Jeebus, you don't need things--you can just keep going, and live with less, and less.

Only when we can return to sharecropper shacks and a serf system, can we truly be freed of the desires that have roont us.

I'm sorry you don't get it that science has been wrong before . . people have been tried and put to death for questioning them, and then it was found that the questioner was right, and the scientists were wrong . . are you willing to go to be put to the stake that you are right ?

Keep digging, Mac, keep digging.

Start making contingency plans for the possible McCain win, because you might not want to stick around for the implosion that this country is going to make in that scenario.

W. T. Fark [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 02:43:00 PM
I propose a simple solution for these scientists. Vote for Obama.

This notion that you can evaluate the benefits of research is inherently faulty. All you need to do is look at the history of science and technology to see that.

Let's see... there are forty some-odd days left until the election and McCain gets increasingly demented and senile with each passing day.

According to my calculations, by November he'll be imploring us to Bathe Santa Now!

monkeyinafez 2008-09-20 02:46:13 PM
The sad thing is that the current financial bailout is going to make it impossible for either McCain or Obama to institute their spending plans should they become PoTUS. Either one will be faced with a federal deficit of monumental proportions. Granted, such has been the case for a long time, but now people are actually paying attention to it and the markets are reacting. Either one will be forced to reduce federal spending in ways that will make very vocal segments of our society howl with rage while others chortle with glee at the killing of loved/hated programs.

The difference, of course, is which segments will be doing the howling. With McCain we will have scientists and those who care about our fellow citizens angry while the military industrial complex and multi-nationals breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy their continually filled trough. Under Obama private citizens making less than $5 million a year may actually get some relief, not to mention the noble members of our military and their families.

What do you expect from the crowd that wants to "teach the controversy" in our science classes? Then in twenty years they'll wonder why the United States no longer leads the way in technological and medical advances.

But at least fags can't get married.

Yeah that's a perfectly reasonable request. Halt everything and then tie it all up with red tape until we "get to the bottom of all this".

Riiiight.

It got built, didn't it, so what the hell are you complaining about? Is science not as good if it's funded by ferriners?

While we're on the subject, I'm throwing my support behind the idea that blindly throwing money around without examining where it's going or what it's going to get you is just plain stupid. That doesn't mean discarding every idea that doesn't pay off in the next fiscal quarter. It does mean questioning the funding of the same research that hasn't produced anything of value in the past three decades.

The sad thing is this will probably give him a boost in the polls. The average American wants all those elitist scholars out of this nation of Christ.

Note to Russia and Iran: Up your defense spending, you're going to need it.

W. T. Fark: This notion that you can evaluate the benefits of research is inherently faulty. All you need to do is look at the history of science and technology to see that.

Here's an interesting anecdote on that. In the first half of the 20th century, white dwarf stars provided quite the conundrum. They didn't really behave like people thought stars should, and you had these crazy folks like Chandreshekar telling people that a massive enough white dwarf would go on collapsing and form a black hole.

All of this was quite theoretical, and really- can you think of anything more "impractical" to research than a rare and not terribly energetic subclass of star? What possible use could that be? People invested man-decades into probing how and why these stars collapsed the way they did.

In the 50s, they found a practical use for all that math- the same type of collapse that makes white dwarves also could be used to make the H-bomb.

You never know where research is going to lead. If you knew, you wouldn't need to do research, now would you!

Bob16 2008-09-20 02:49:37 PM
If you wanna know how crazy McBush is read Cliff Schecter's book about him or watch the c-span interview with Schecter when they put in online at the Washington Journal portion of the c-span website in a day or 2.

He was so out of control at one point that he shoved Strom Thermond to the floor when Strom was in his late 80's or early 90's.

A real tough guy.

In high school McBush's nick name was McNasty cause he was such a shiathead so you can see why republicans identify with him.
