40% of white Americans as opposed to 33% of white Democrats. Hmmm.
That would mean that some other group of white folks is even less tolerant.

/I wonder who that might be.

I always suspect that people who describe themselves as "tolerant" are not actually unprejudiced. It's a loaded word if you think about what "toleration" actually is. It implies generosity from the "tolerant" person that someone is allowed to be different or graciously not actively discriminated against. People in majority groups who use it to describe their attitudes towards a minority group seem to think that they should get a thank you card for putting up with all this difference, and seem to see it as a free pass to ignore actual discrimination or racist attitudes they may have without being aware of them.

I harbor negative views towards everyone who isn't me (or when I'm feeling generous, my family). This is the Human Condition.

I just don't act on them. I realize that those feelings are (usually) due to MY shortcomings, and that I need to use my head, not just my gut reactions.

Kome [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 09:21:08 AM
13 paragraphs into the story, you get the biggest result of the poll:

Race is not the biggest factor driving Democrats and independents away from Obama. Doubts about his competency loom even larger, the poll indicates.

A few times a day we get a "here's why Obama will lose" story that sounds, to me, very much like a desperate opposition going "please? Please let this be a problem?"

My favorite ones are the "Obama is hurting himself by doing X, he'd best stop it" articles that show up in the WSJ or on LGF. You know that the only REAL translation for those headlines is "dear GOD Obama is kicking our ASSES by doing that... please Please PLEASE make him stop!"

Has anybody else noticed how few McCain supporters there are on here compared to Bush supporters in 2004? I think he's doomed. Nobody cares about his candidacy.

Considering that 1/3 of blacks harbor negative attitudes toward blacks, I'd say white Democrats are probably doing OK on the tolerance scale.

The Iconoclast: "... a seminal moment for a nation that enshrined slavery in its Constitution."

WTF?

Article I, Section 9: Limits on Congress

The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.

This prevents Congress from abolishing slavery before 1808.

Article IV, Section 2: No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, But shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due.

Why do you think they made the 13th amendment to the Constitution? (The one that abolished slavery.)

muck4doo [TotalFark] 2008-09-20 09:39:48 AM
Why don't they ask Mexicans and Asians for their opinions on these matters. Why must some people see everything in black and white?

MorrisBird: Has anybody else noticed how few McCain supporters there are on here compared to Bush supporters in 2004? I think he's doomed. Nobody cares about his candidacy.

I think the funniest thing is there are very few (if any) McCain supporters that rise above talking point level troll. Nobody argues his policy stances or discusses why he should be president. And, it's the same group of 10-15 people. Go through a political thread and make a list of people that post more than once or twice about political issues...and you'll get about 15 people (excluding the one line GOP trolls) that actively support the GOP.

10 Bash Obama
20 Repeat GOP talking point
30 GO TO 10

So a third of White Americans are honest enough to admit they have prejudices? I wouldn't worry about them. There might be a few KKK members in there but most of them probably have struggled to overcome their prejudices as much as they can.

The rest are either lying through their teeth or are just too stupid to realize that they aren't free of prejudice-- except for Steven Colbert, who doesn't see race.

TeddyBallGame: From the "When all else is lost come up with some bullshiat story about race" files

Honestly, I really don't think so. And I wish it were bullshiat. Some of it probably is. Unfortunately racism is alive and kicking in this country. Sadly I know a few people who wouldn't vote for Obama just because he's black. There's racism amongst all races, not just white vs black.

As a country I think we have come a long way. I still think there's a long way to go.

If, by chance, Obama does lose, there's no way he can personally use it as an excuse if we do want to move even further in the right direction.

In my state it is certainly an issue.^ I am pretty ashamed that race is still such an issue at this point in our history, but pointing fingers and placing blame for it doesn't do anything to solve the problem...

...voting Barack Obama into office, on the other hand, just might.

conservatives (and by conservatives, i mean the anything-but-conservative, nationalize-our-banking-industry, convert-the-arabs-to-democracy-by-the-sword neo-stalinist republican party) don't "soul search." they are convinced 100% of their moral rectitude. it's why studies show they sleep much better at night than progressives.

bobbette: What is a Yellow Dog?

In the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century, Yellow Dog Democrats were voters in the U.S. Southern states who consistently voted for Democratic candidates. The term arose from the notion that loyal Southern Democrats would vote for a yellow dog before voting for a Republican.
Link (new window)

Oddly enough, after Northern liberals started coming down to the South and assisting black Southerners in registering as Democrats (and after Southern Democrats lost several Supreme Court cases in which they tried to keep the party for whites only), millions of passionately loyal Southern white Democrats became passionately loyal Republicans.
