Why was he called "the great communicator"?

I don't understand that and the republican/fark independent fellating of him.

They loved him because he was the biggest celebrity in the world.

Isn't that Senator McCain's campaign slogan (check that, that has been every republican's slogan since Reagan).

It is easy to digest and totally vapid. The subtle point is "We know better than you because we are adults, so close mouth and keep your opinions to yourself".

He did nothing of note. Reagan did not kill the Soviet Union it was already dying, and had been for years. Hell, Reagan's policies are at the very core of our current economic crisis. Reagan was a waste.

I'm not trying to turn this into a Obama bashing thread. There are plenty of those around here. But let's just be objective.

You can't be serious...Any impartial person watching the Obama video would have to admit he came off like a particularly nasal Steve Urkel. 'Hold on, hold on, hold on, now, let me speak you young people, come, come on you guys'. That's practically a direct quote.

He didn't regain his cool until his campaign staff and secret service escorted them from the building.

In short, Ronald Reagan displayed confidence. Obama acted more like a flustered professor.

For good or for ill, Reagan did a lot of stuff. For example, you say that Reagan was responsible for our current economic crisis.

It's a fair cop, but you have to admit that farking the economy up for years to come is not ``nothing of note.''

You're a fool. In 1980, the Soviet Union was at the top of its game compared to us. America was in the pits following the 70s. They certainly felt confident enough to invade Afghanistan.

What I am saying is that contrary to the original poster, that the Soviet Union was certainly not already 'dying' in 1980. If anything, it was crowing over American weakness. I.E, the fall of Vietnam, Watergate, the Iran Hostage Crisis, the insane fuel costs, the Olympics being boycotted, etc. The Warsaw Bloc looked practically ascendant until 1984.

I'll admit to not being impartial, but I wouldn't compare Obama's response to Urkle, it was a weak response for sure, but how many times has he truly been heckled in this fashion?

---Warning: Biased Opinion Forthcoming---

Actually, I'm fairly certain that infringing upon a speakers first amendment rights by attempting to shout them out when they attempt to speak, has traditionally been a weapon of Liberals when Conservatives are trying to speak. I can understand why Obama would be flustered by experiencing this himself.

"Alright, I'm going to talk about it, but Americans are tired of us shouting at each other."
-J. McCain, Republican Convention 2008-

"Hold on, hold on, hold on, now, let me speak you young people, come, come on you guys"

Comparing Obama to Urkle was excessive. Yet he seemed very much the flustered professor, even right down to the 'let's get back to work' comment after the hall monitors Secret Service escorted them from the room. You could also tell he was visibly disturbed while trying to ignore them.

Sadly, as with the case of Atillathepun , suggesting the Obama might have had a less than cool moment, is akin to claiming that Jesus Christ contradicted himself.

RemyDuron 2008-09-20 06:28:57 AM
The Soviet Union ate itself. Go read Armageddon Averted. A stuffed dummy could have "killed" the Soviet Union like Reagan did. If you want to give someone credit, his name is Gorbachev and he is kind of hard to miss.

It takes two to tango ya know. We forced them into an arms race that certainly tipped them over the edge and helped the collapse. If you look at all the summits, it was Reagan *and* Gorbachev working together that finally caused it to implode. Reagan held firm and whether or not you want to laugh about SDI, the rumor and possibility of it was enough to bring them to the table.

The troubling thing today is that Russia has increased it's defense spending by about 50%, attempting to nab Canada's North Pole resources etc...

The first amendment protects your free speech against the government. Someone shouting you down is not a violation of your first amendment rights. This might honestly be one of the dumbest things I've ever read on Fark.

Also, this is not the first time that Obama has been been heckled, so no, you can't has the conservative victim card. Not yours.

IMO Obama handled it better - a politician ought to be willing to talk to those with opposing views and not just telle them to shut up.

So what you're saying is that your entire system is constructed in a manner that would not allow for dissenters to directly confront a candidate, whether Kang or Kodos?

Hmm, two different words there. Now the first amendment garuntee's the right to free speech, not the freedom to actually be heard, you are correct. However, given the number of times I've heard squealing from the left regarding this matter, I'd say I was quite within bounds using that type of language.

Hardly ignorant, but then again this is Fark and assumptions are par for the course.

/Regarding Dumbest thing on Fark, you obviously missed the "Before we can get Barack Obama, we need to deserve Barack Obama" comment from one starry eyed disciple when McCain overtook him in the Polls.
