Capitalism and responsibility had a messy divorce. Unfortunately, the former cannot exist without the latter. Responsibility went to live with her mother and capitalism committed suicide.

At the same time, he warned Democratic leaders against adding "controversial provisions" to the rescue package "that could delay action.

"This is not a time for partisanship," Bush said.

The guy is never off script. 8 farking years of this crud. If Congress had passed half the shiat he proposed in the last 4 years, we'd be in far worse mess.

"Let's privative all our safety nets, durrrrr."

"Ah let's not."

"Partisan!"

Bush also has authorized Treasury to tap up to $50 billion from a Depression-era fund

Fascinating. I wouldn't have thought anything like this could survive. Even the damn post office is quasi-privatized.

Any company who gets a bailout should have to cede significant control over to the government. Since the government saved their asses, their asses now belong to the entire country. This way the government gets her money back, and can the public can benefit from the company's growth.

"The risk ... of not acting would be far higher. Further stress on our financial markets would cause massive job losses, devastate retirement accounts and further erode housing values, as well as dry up loans for new homes and cars and college tuitions."

"Not to mention completely wiping out any chance of my party retaining the White House," President Bush added, before sporting a dopey grin and unleashing his trademark chuckle, "Heh..he he he he heh."

Darconix:the worst thing Bush has done in his tenure.

That is a tough one. I think denying habeas corpus rights to US citizens is at the top though.

Along with kidnapping and torture.

That crud made me feel physically sick when he was spouting his tripe like some farking John McClane of the financial world. What an asshole trying to take credit for what, is it tens or hundreds of thousands of talented finance guys (and gals) have lost their jobs and been kicked out into this unrelenting environment.

Yeah, some of them made bad decisions and were greedy, but I'll bet anyone most of them were seeing what was happening and rolling their eyes, unable to do anything about it because they're back office staff or bean counters, not sales.

Then there are the poor shlubs who were told houses only go up and got taken in by the hype. That figure could be millions, yet George farking Bush was on screen while world markets were creating the biggest rises for years (on the back of anti-shorting rules), acting like he's got all tough on the causes of financial problems, and I bet those same poor shlubs thank him for what he's done. Slimy, idiotic, prat.

funny...we've got schools in horrible shape, teachers dont' get paid enough, bridges falling apart, Social security is a joke, medical care is too expensive...and here are taxpayer dollars funding some corporate mistake.

Nice.

Were taxpayers getting a share of the short lived profits these companies made? I don't think so.

Are the CEOs of these companies handing over their fat bonuses to help the situation? Hells no.

Well, at least Wall Street knows that their big donations have had yet another good results. Low tax rates, easily avoidable tax system, lower audits at the high end, weak regulation. Now, free money!

I wonder how much dividends+buyback+other compensation has been paid out in the past 6 years.

Yup good for the 400 people under this Administration who have increased their wealth by $654 billion. Not so good for the 180 million who have seen their wealth decrease by 2 - 3 K per person.

Largest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind in only 8 years.

It's mindboggling that when "conservatives" watch the movies Wall Street and A Few Good Men, they come out of them thinking Gordon Gekko (Douglas) and Col. Jessep (Nicholson) were the good guys.

You libs are socialists, and I want no part of that whatsoever. However, if the government is to move toward socialism, better income-generating areas such as the financial sector than your insane subsidized healthcare plan.

And to still call libs socialists is pretty full retard after the Bush Fed has socialised us, right? AMIRITE?

President Bush, a nominal social conservative Republican, just nationalized about a third of our economy. Nationalized. As in 'the government now directly controls it'. As in 'socialist'.

Looks like the libs aren't socialist anymore, it's the conservatives who have done more to make us commies than anything else.

It wouldn't surprise me to see that happen, but it'll be caps on US (i.e. the rank and file) and not on the CEO/corporate officer types.
