I am still amazed at this genre and its diverse and complex musical voicing. The dynamics are amazing in range and intelligence.

Florida's greatest musical accomplishments does not consist of Luther Campbell and his cronies.

It's these guys:

Truly Rick Wright influenced this genre considerably. They must be in mourning right now...

My entire high school and college life was shaped by poetry such as:

-One time for the rodeo (come on, now, ride it girl)
-Give me that donkey butt and those big old legs, I ain't too hard to beg
-Come on ride that train (now ride it out)
-The butterfly? Oh, oh, that's old. Let me see that tootsie roll

Wrong. Florida's greatest musical export is death metal. we practically invented it. whether you like it or not, there is denying it's impact on heavy metal 25 years later.

Do things evolve in Florida?

My wife grew up in Florida dancin' to booty music. She introduced me to such classics as 'B-Girls' and 'Shake That Ass'. To me, it's funny shiat. These songs make me laugh. Of course, during that same time period I was listening to Florida death metal, so I had no idea about the *other* awesome Florida music scene. I was missing out.

My favorite? A song called "Yo' Mama's on Crack Rock" by The Dogs. I actually didn't believe her when she sang it.

"That can't be a real song," I said. I was wrong. The video is farking hilarious:

"The metal scene in Florida, especially Tampa, started in the mid-1980s and is still thriving today.

Tampa has produced death metal artists such as Cannibal Corpse, the legendary innovators of the genre Death and Morbid Angel, as well as seminal acts like Deicide, Obituary, Hate Eternal, Monstrosity, Nocturnus, Atheist and Acheron.

Tampa is also home to the infamous Morrisound Studios. Records such as Deicide's debut album, Deicide; Morbid Angel's debut album Altars of Madness, Scream Bloody Gore from Death, as well as many other classic death metal albums.

Ft. Lauderdale has produced a few metal bands as well, such as Into the Moat, Malevolent Creation, Divine Empire, Kult ov Azazel, and Hibernus Mortis."

and yet, booty music is our greatest export?

Until Ft. Lauderdale was mentioned, I was beginning to think it was East Coast vs. West Coast, Florida-style, with death metal in the west and booty music to the east.

The inclusion of Ft. Lauderdale ruins that idea, though. However, the bands mentioned from Ft. Lauderdale aren't even close to being as well-known or influential as the Tampa bands.

I think it's something called sarcasm. Not sure. Could be going out on a limb there.

Yeah, cause everyone knows the #1 export of Florida is obituaries and death notices.

DJ Smurph AKA Mr. Collipark (think Soulja Boy and Ying Yang Twins), Lil Jon, and many other Southern Rap producers started out making bass. So the comparison of influence is really between the main form of rap today vs the harder forms of metal today.

Lets not forget Mr. Vanilla Ice. A1A, Beachfront Aveneue! well... i guess thats more Ft. Lauderdale.

They're not huge here in the States because they are terrible. It's t-top Camaro metal for 17 year-old football players with guns in their school lockers.

really? they're from florida too? crazy. somehow i pictured them being from, i dunno, little rock or kansas city or something.

i saw 'em open for overkill a couple of years back, when they were relatively fresh on the scene. the venue was pretty small, a few hundred people. my friend enjoyed 'em more than i did. i thought they were okay. they didn't annoy me too much, they didn't amaze me. they were, at least, relatively solid performers given their inexperience and youth. on the other hand, i've since seen the youtube videos making fun of their songs, at which i lol'd, cos the singer guy seems to be kinduva douchebag.

the crowd was amusing, with the off-my-lawn overkill fans and the young crowd going nuts for trivium. i'm somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. let's put it this way: i have a lawn, but it is pathetically neglected. anyway, the young'uns were going apeshiat for trivium. based on that experience alone, i've no doubt they're big in europe. european record companies actually spend money promoting metal bands.

they're a good band, talent-wise and songwriting-wise. i don't know where heafy gets the douchebag label from. i met the guys in orlando a couple years ago and they were all really cool (some friends of mine went to high school with their bass player paolo). rita, dimebag's ex-girlfriend, is their alcohol sponsor so we were flanked by two foot bottles of crown royal all over the kitchen of the tour bus. that was probably one of the coolest after-show experiences i've ever had, so like i said... i don't know where the douchebag label came from, but that's not what i saw.

i guess i just don't take much seriously. like i said, i laughed at some youtube vids that made the guy seem like a douchebag. that doesn't exactly mean i agree, but i can see why he'd have haters (hey, just based on his emo-metal appearance alone, he's gonna get shiat for that from haters.). i don't have an opinion about him either way, really, but even if i did think he's a total douchebag, it'd be without actually meeting the guy, so what's it all worth? not much. i'm sure the guy's getting a lot more tail than i am.

meh. rock on with trivium. it's all good. hell, maybe they can do some booty music covers and finally cross into the american mainstream. i say good luck to 'em. i'm just pissed they ruined my theory on east vs. west florida music, which otherwise would've revolutionized florida culture studies for decades to come. even outside of fark. oh well.
