Maybe they'll just have to have a guitar-free Europe?

I have had gear stolen before and it blows, but ultimately it's replaceable. However, losing the guitar that you've played for 26 years must be heartbreaking.

hopefully someone will steal the mandolin he plays poorly, too

This from the guy who was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf?

I can't comment on his mandolin skills, but IMO, Pete Buck is one of the great under rated guitarists.

Flash, is that the actual guitar?

That is the guitar as pictured in the link at the bottom of TFA. I'm betting that the guitar will get returned for the "no questions" reward. Especially if the guitar community around there lets everyone know what to look for. That would preclude any resale.

That sucks man. I got a guitar I've had for 25 years and I have actually made sure it had a decent home even when I didn't. You become attached to your shiat man. And some dink stealing it would make me irate. Of course this is Peter Buck and he's about as threatening as Grover the Muppet.

But he could snap...

Let's change the subject, then.

Should we talk about the weather? Should we talk about the government?

When I die I have demanded that I be buried with my Fender Jazz and Precision basses.

I adore them both as my own children.

In fact,a hollowed out Ampeg SVT cabinet would make a fine coffin.

Man thats a hell of a blow. You can say its all just equipment and its all replaceable, but fark that. A guitar is not something that comes off the assembly line exactly the same as the one before it or after it. All guitars just play differently. And then you throw in the fact that it was made 25+ years ago, by people no longer making guitars, using methods and equipment no longer available. And the guitar was treated a very specific way in those 25 years, banged, beat up, and cared for in a way that made a guitar that is so impossible to replace in any way.

theurge14: I've always wanted a Rick...

I've had a few Ricks. 3 or 4 basses and a couple of guitars. I love the way Rick basses sound, but never found them comfortable to play.

I owned a 360 for a while (6 string), but never really bonded with it. I currently own a 620 6 string guitar, which I really like a lot. I take it out every few months, play it for a few weeks and put it back in the case again. That way I never really get bored with it.

Owing to a smallish production capacity and huge demand, it can take a very long time to get a newly ordered instrument delivered. Prices have also gone up quite a bit since I got my guitar back in 2004. Even back then it took almost a year from when I ordered it to the time I got it. It was worth the wait.

True Story:

After a music festival in Austin several years back, a guy I know who works the festival found one of Peter Buck's acoustic guitars in a venue where he had played a show with (I think) Minus 5.

Said guy attempted to get in touch with Buck or his people through the festival organizers, but he was unsuccessful.

The guitar stayed in Austin and may or may not have been used by a band I may or may not have played with during the recording of an album in 2003.

REM again played in Austin in 2006 at the ACL Festival and the "Bucktar" as we called it was returned to Peter Buck without a scratch ...

The thing that bothers me about R.E.M. is that Michael opened his fat mouth about the election.

Dr. Fritz Rotwang 2008-09-16 08:20:58 PM
I'm no REM fan, but this is so sad. The same thing happened to Robyn Hitchcock on his last tour, while Peter Buck was a member of Robyn's band. Starlight Mints lost a very unique guitar and many other instruments to tour theft. ALL of the Stooges gear was recently stolen.

I dig the Finnish response, though. In the US, it happens all the time. In Finland, it's an affront to their collective honor as a music community. I'm betting this guitar comes home soon.

You...don't play the guitar much, do you.

Jefferson, I think it's lost.

My old bass player used an SVT that survived a termite attack in a garage in Pittsburg. There were severe gnaw-marks clearly visible in the back. Other equipment there didn't fare so well, though. Entire basses were eaten, leaving only the metal parts.

Om, nom, nom.

So now someone in Finland has a chance to be wildly overrated.
