When my wife was preggers, Tommy was the perfect length for my drive from Cumberland, MD to Morgantown, WV.

That is my driving album.

Anything by Pink Floyd.

No Nebraska by the Boss?
No Sea Change by Beck?

That list is the music of the California whiteman, it doesn't not represent the rest of us.

PYROY 2008-09-15 02:21:22 PM
1. Appetite for destruction
2. Boston (Boston)

Everything else is just filler.

Alice In Chains - Dirt
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Deams
Pearl Jam - Ten
Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith

I've had Iron Maiden's Powerslave in my tape deck for the last three years.

(Yes, I still have a tape deck in my car. It's a classic car with an old two-post radio and I don't feel like cutting up the dash.)

gwowen 2008-09-15 02:23:09 PM
Funhouse is great driving album -- it's a great running album.
I'd like to stake a claim for Tago Mago by Can -- that halfway house between the Stooges and Miles Davis.

Honorable mention to Rush - Moving Pictures for "Red Barchetta".

aimtastic [TotalFark] 2008-09-15 02:24:02 PM
That MBV album is awesome, but I wouldn't call it driving music. It's more like falling asleep behind the wheel and drifting into oncoming traffic music.

Red Barchetta?

I_Love_Cheesecake 2008-09-15 02:24:51 PM
Loveless by My Bloody Valentine? Great album, but hardly a road record.

My nomination: Excuses for Travellers by Mojave 3.

bglove25 2008-09-15 02:25:19 PM
All Things Must Pass by George Harrison. Great record, Awesome jams on the end make great driving music.

Is this a thread where everyone thinks they have better taste in music than everyone else?

(( I already know the answer to this question: Of course it is. ))

Still... I submit Boxer and/or Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers by The National. It's mellow and it makes me so happy.

My second choice (along with Steve Vai's Passion & Warfare)

assegai [TotalFark] 2008-09-15 02:33:19 PM
That list was written by a hippy. Welcome to the year 2008, not one piece of electronic music on that list?

scottycujo 2008-09-15 02:33:27 PM
.. And Justice For All ain't bad to drive to.

sidgoop: My personal favorite.

One of my other favorites. Good choice sidgoop.

The first track off of the first NEU! album.... the white one.
Neu! [the black album, 3rd one]
Best of CCR.
"Pink Flag" by Wire
"more songs about buildings and food" or "fear of music" by Talking Heads
"Marquee Moon" by Television.
"Physical Graffiti" or "Houses of the Holy" by Led Zeppelin
"Low" or "heroes" by Bowie.
"Blue Valentine" or "Nighthawks at the Diner" by Tom Waits [great for driving at night]

bad_ed 2008-09-15 02:34:05 PM
My favorite is Devo's Greatest Hits.

Earpj [TotalFark] 2008-09-15 02:34:20 PM
I need to have songs I can sing along with on long drives, so I can stay awake. Therefor, I usually fall back on my 80's favorites. Duran Duran, Wham, INXS, Rod Stewart, Ozzy...you get the idea. I'm not picky...

Tom_Slick [TotalFark] 2008-09-15 02:34:21 PM
They left out Queensryche Operation:Mindcrime. That cassette made the drive between Valdota GA and Atlanta almost tolerable.

shower_in_my_socks [TotalFark] 2008-09-15 02:34:25 PM
Good list. Some personal favs that I would add:

1. Doves - Last Broadcast
2. Fleet Foxes (currently on a kick)
3. The Books (generally not something I'm into, but there's something about driving around in a cosmopolitan area with their music on - it fits. Works better at night.)
4. Tom Petty - any of his greatest hits comps
5. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
6. Grandaddy (any album from the early 00's)
7. Radiohead - OK Computer
8. REM (New Adventures... or Automatic for...)
9. Wilco (anything)

KingKauff 2008-09-15 02:34:54 PM
Pink Floyd - Animals
Phish - Rift
moe. - Trash Cans, Car Tires
Grateful Dead - Europe '72
Allman Bros. - Fillmore East

jaylectricity [TotalFark] 2008-09-15 02:35:02 PM
I've driven many a mile to that Beastie Boys album.

And a more guilty pleasure of mine would be Kottonmouth Kings: Rolling Stoned.

beerrun [TotalFark] 2008-09-15 02:35:40 PM
If any Beastie Boys album could be considered a driving album, it would be The In Sound from Way Out!

THe best, accept no substitute: "highway star" there is nothing like it

John_Rat_Safari 2008-09-15 02:38:18 PM
Led Zep III?

It's a masterpiece but I wouldn't say it helps eat up the miles, I prefer anything motorik (yes, that's a word) like prime krautrock (Neu, Can etc) or dangerously repetitive french techno (Data, Justice, Daft Punk even.
driving music needs to be repetitive and of an even tempo, but with an urgency and 'some kind of something' to keep the interest.
That said the Pixies made 'slow fast slow' an artform and driving with the top down listening to just about anything they did is amazing, so what do I know?

I_Love_Cheesecake: Loveless by My Bloody Valentine? Great album, but hardly a road record.

Agreed - most activities I associate with that CD involve drugs.

/2 weeks and counting 'til the play here in SF w00t!

HappyHarryHardOn: THe best, accept no substitute: "highway star" there is nothing like it

The original not that horrid remake they did in the early 90s. 6 Cylinders all mine? WTF? I know late 80s early 90s cars sucked but you you could still get a V8.

Long highway trip, I'll take something chill and relaxed like Blind Melon.

Short hop across town on 285, better make that Rage Against the Machine.

AgentOrangeDrink 2008-09-15 02:39:54 PM
Dead Meadow? Awesome!

music is so subjective. these lists are all bull. Plus there are hardly any whole albums i can stand to listen to anyway. Its all about the mix.
