It doesn't matter if takes one picture, follows you for 6 miles or makes a full motion feature of you. There will always be the "I'm a good enough driver to speed." or the "cash grab" crowds, so good. I know there is nothing that will keep some from driving like idiots so at least hit them in the wallet. If only the fines would go somewhere more effective.

/I await your slings and arrows.

If you want the government to raise the speed limit, lobby the government!

/lobbies can get a decent amount of sway for relatively little money
//you can't live in a democratic republic (or whatever the UK has) and then complain that you have no say in the government

I'll just arrange for an identical make and model of car using the same license plate number to travel about six miles ahead of me. They can clock me at 3600 mph.

This is why government should never receive funding from the punishment of vices. Government should donate ALL proceeds from traffic violations, cigarette taxes, alcohol taxes, and speed cameras.

What happens when their endeavor to reduce unsavory behavior, by taxation, begins to work? shiat, THEY'RE OUT OF MONEY!

Link was sadly not as awesome as I'd hoped.

I'd envisioned a robot with a radar detector and a camera, either attached to a model car chassis or a jet engine.

As long as young drivers are continually starting to drive, there will always be a reliable source of revenue for speeding traps.

Don't speed.

Top Gear figured out the answer to this ages ago: Just go too fast for the camera to register the object as a car.

Honestly, what could you need so badly that you couldn't drive at the speed limit?

There's some high-tech cameras out there, too. If you blow a red light a tech can tell what type of soda you're drinking or what color your eyes are if the lighting is right.

They just artificially lower the speed limit to raise money! It's just another process in which big government steps over the line and takes away rights our founding fathers wanted us to have.

I'm perfectly capable of driving my car in traffic at 90mph while talking on my cell. I've had over 10 years of driving experience and I am very good at it. Traffic accidents actually decrease when speed increases. Stop lights and stop signs only add to accidents, we should remove them to improve safety but the fat cats want their big paycheck!

Hmmmmm....

Sort of like legislators here in NC want to raise, not lower the gas tax because why? At $4 farking a gallon people are driving less. So hey, let's just raise the tax until we're flat out of revenue for our bloated government. Same thing for cigarettes. And then they biatch that the state lottery isn't meeting revenue projections.

Can these same cameras be modified to fire a laser or some sort of smart missile at a vehicle in the fast lane going below the speed limit?

There already is collision avoidance- the ability to hold red lights all around for someone who trips the algorithms and blows through an intersection

Well i know in certain parts in and around Indianapolis they are experimenting with overrides that moving emergency vehicles can trigger. (even though our lights are still not programmed correctly for traffic flow)

Collision avoidance sounds good even if not foolproof.

Just wait until they use your I-pass (Illinois) to gauge your time between tollbooths. Having been on all IL tollways, I can assure you everyone gets a ticket a day. Will start to happen soon.

Amusing to note the pro-camera people on the thread who can't differentiate between "hero guy on way to gym going 30 mph over the limit in traffic whilst talking on cellphone and eating burger" with "guy booked by revenue camera for going 10 mph over in light traffic with no danger to public"

It's that kind of stupid zero tolerance logic that got us the nanny state in the first place.

I think the cameras need to guage your speeding by the rate you are going over the average for that stretch of road, at that moment. Basically, "flow of traffic". If 12 cars are averaging 65 mph and one man is averaging 75, that's speeding. If 4 lanes of traffic are going 50 mph in bad conditions, and 1 person goes 70, he will get cited.

Therefore, if the road is empty, you could be allowed to drive at a higher rate. HOWEVER, once you see cars coming near you, you must slow down or you will be going faster than the rest of traffic.

I understand your point on that one (I've never had a ticket, but constantly driving about 10 over as I do is only asking for one). The biggest problem though is it seems like the prevalent attitude (or perhaps just the loudest) is the former of those two. I hear at least a few of my coworkers talk about how fast they've driven before, and it amazes me that they are around to even tell us about it.

There are things that should change with traffic laws (I honestly think that people should have to retake their driving tests every 10 years; if we're going to spend that much time in the DMV, might as well do something with that time), but don't bet on them ever happening. Numbers are what they are, and they suggest that higher speed limits result in more deaths. Maybe not for the people that are actually capable of driving faster, but if you are able to drive 30 over, you can drive the speed limit as well.

What Plants Crave 2008-09-14 10:36:01 PM
What the Don't Speed crowd always fails to take into account is the fact that they themselves, at some point, have been speeding but may have been too busy watching the farking road at the time to notice. Would you be happy with a camera ticket if you were driving like a sensible person, but happened to drift a bit over 70 when cresting that hill where the camera happens to be? These things always happen to be in areas where a driver is likely to pick up speed because of a hill, or as the traffic enforcement types like to call them 'problem areas'.

I don't have a problem with speed enforcement, as long as it's by a human who can make a judgment call. There is a difference between a driver weaving through traffic and one who picked up too much speed on the way down a hill. A camera doesn't know the difference, but a patrol officer easily make the distinction and act accordingly. The other side of that argument is that these cameras do nothing to identify other problems such as drunk / aggressive / reckless driving.

Of course this is a tougher argument against the speed averaging cameras. In that case drivers should be given a *reasonable* margin for error, but that still leaves the problem of attention diverted from the road to watch the speedometer.

I'll still never agree with the cameras solely on the basis that having more cops on the road would be more effective, but that's less profitable. And anyone who thinks this is about *anything* other than revenue is only buying into the propaganda. Here in AZ I have heard our governor both downplay the revenue one day and use it as a justification for installing more cameras on another. They barely even mention safety anymore.

I got my 1 speeding ticket, 13 years ago, by an officer who caught me fair and square driving like an idiot in the California desert... and I was ok with that. I just don't think that most of the people getting popped by these cameras really deserve a ticket and all the hassle that comes along with it... we're all being squeezed hard enough as it is.

SimonSaid 2008-09-14 10:38:29 PM
The bulk of the places adopting speed cameras do so by contracting a private company that gets a cut of the fines paid. In city after city as the level of fines fall because people slow down the equipment gets adjusted in that special way to keep the bucks flowing. Yeah, it's about safety.
