No, I think this is "turn the other cheek." As in "turn your head a little so I can smash this shotgun butt into your eye socket, Mr. Stabby Atheist Christian-Hater Dude."

From that article, it says beer was involved (SHOCKING) and that he was a self-described Atheists trying to behead these women only because they were Christian. Now, my question: did they ever interact? Were they door-to-door people and he just flipped and tracked them down, or saw them leave a church as thought 'Yep, they have to die.' I would like to know how he knew that they were Christian and why them. Maybe he did just want to kill them because they were Christian.

Regardless of how it was found out, nothing excused what he tried to do, so screw him.

Yes, I agree, of course. But it's not gonna stop people citing it both here and elsewhere as an example of the evils of atheism.

It'll be op-ed fodder by Tuesday. I'll bet that at least 3 prominent conservative op-ed writers will have cited this guy as an example of the evils of atheism within the next week or two.

I believe that he is shear proof of the dangers of utter stupidity, much like the people who use religion to cause harm.

Just proves that a label doesn't stop people from being assholes.

He must have done it because the atheist's magic book says to kill all believers. Except there is no atheist magic book.

So he must have done it be cause his invisible friend whispered it in his ear! Except we don't have invisible friends either (as a rule anyway).

Guess he's just a whackjob then ... throw the book at him (the legal one, not the magic one).

This guy represents the worst that contemporary atheism has to offer. Doesn't compare to the worst that contemporary Christianity or contemporary Islam has to offer, but he's still a violent asshat who deserves what he got.

Lessee...this happened in Colorado.

So if a gay guy beats the crap out of some fag-bashing asshole, and the cops elect to do nothing because the fag-bashing asshole got it handed back to him in spades, this is "OOH, BAD, EVIL COPS!" (Fag not charged with aggravated assault)

A Christian belts some atheist asshole in the eye and blinds him, and the cops elect to do nothing because the atheist asshole gets Mosaic justice in the classic eye-for-an-attempted-beheading sense, this is "OOH, GOOD, WONDERFUL COPS!" (Christian not charged with aggravated assault)

I love you Farkers to death, but sometimes your sense of justice is warped.

It would be awesome if the shotgun-wielding eye-basher were another atheist. The story doesn't say, so I'm going to go ahead and assume that for purposes of narrative irony.

Why is this guy NOT representative of atheism, but people always post pictures of like... the baptist ministries asshat to be representative of all of christians.

I dunno... I remember not too long ago there was a story of an atheist and a creationist getting into a drunken brawl about evolution which ended in a stabbing; all the fark atheists were like "SEE, its always the religious who pull the knife first..." etc.

Not seeing such play action when its the other way around.

Erm... the cops didn't elect to do nothing. They're already charging him with felony intimidation or something like that, and are investigating for possibly more charges. Read the end of the article again.

the Grinch: "I'm not really seeing this guy as representative of atheism... more like representative of anyone who could be described as "militant" (or "evangelistic") in their beliefs regarding religion"

Come on now, give them their cookie. This really does fit the bill. His hatred of the victims seems to stem from his intolerance of their beliefs. Intolerance may not spring from atheism but that difference did wind up motivating violence. Divisions of any sort between groups of humans often do result in inter-group violence, for a variety of reasons.

If we're going to point out instances of intolerant religious people we need to be willing to acknowledge instances of intolerant irreligious people. The question then becomes whether beliefs are capable of influencing behavior for the worse, whether monotheism for instance has such an influence, and whether atheism by itself is sufficient to motivate anyone to do anything. Perhaps comparisons of predominantly atheistic capitalist countries to religious capitalist countries (Best to keep all other aspects as close to the same as possible to as not to compare apples and oranges) and then examine the standard of living indicies for the religious nations versus the irreligious ones. One could also examine the crime, education and other statistics for each demographic group.

Interestingly enough, the one eyed dick in the article may, in fact, be having issues viewing images. So it isn't neccesarily a threadjack so much as a stealth joke.

Those people are all the same. Sad that they can't realize it.

I did that joke in Alabama, in Fife, and these three rednecks met me after the show. "Hey, buddy! C'mere! Mr. Funny-man, c'mere! Hey, buddy, we're Christians, and we don't like what you said."

"So then forgive me."

I don't think atheism plays as much a role as INSANITY. Oh sure we've all had a few too many beers and ended up in a fight, but deciding to go behead some ladies? No sir, I wouldn't classify that as normal at all.
