Let's face it, if you're counting on Florida to make or break your election, you need to get a better strategy....

Jebus farking christ, looking at the US try to handle elections over the past 8 years has convinced me that we are not worthy to be a world power. We can't create ballots that are easy to understand, we lose them, we find them and then to avoid the entire damn problem we turn to easily hacked electronic machines with no paper backups.

It's not that farking hard people. 3rd world countries routinely manage it.

Multiple people check credentials on entry, marked in at least two locations, one of which is print only
Big print paper ballots, one candidate per line
Clearly marked blocks of candidates
Mark the ballot with black ink next to the candidate's name. No paper punch. Mismark and you get a new ballot while the first is shredded in front of you.
Stick in optical reader on your way out, paper ballot goes into a box.
Optical scan results are *not certified* until a hand count is done as well. Both are done at the same time in different locations, with witnesses from all political parties watching. If the two records disagree, mandatory recount and checks against the records from step 1 to see if the numbers match. (Having two totally different types of records makes it much harder to cook- you can't just lose a ballot box or hack the reader results- you have to do both at the same time.)

This is by no means perfect and election experts are welcome to point out improvements, but it's a hell of a lot better than leaving it up to Palm Beach County and Diebold in a race to see who can fark it up the most.

The USA should be the subject of a UN report urging the US have a unified Electoral Board to handle elections at the federal level, and have EU and UN election observers monitor polling booths.

Mass hacking isn't that much of an issue, they're much much more worried about the only thing that's actually happened-individual districts botching the ballots.
Even if someone were to mass hack, I'm sure it'd be pretty easy to trace. If one day florida went red by 5 points, then went blue the next by 10, people would notice.

99% of the people that work for the local districts as volunteers are older folk during the vote process. For Florida, I assume that means many of the left lane driving, right turn signal using elderly are the ones counting the votes.

As a proud resident of this fine county, let me point out several things:

1) The person running these elections is a Dem. His name is Arthur Anderson. He's black. So no more "they stole the election" this time around, except if youre republican. Youre still allowed to biatch, i guess.

2) Crist and the elections board REFUSED to certify these results. They didn't quickly certify the results so a recount wouldnt matter. Totally different scenario. Totally logical.

3) ALL of the poll workers are 60+ ...my precinct voting is held in a farking gated retirement community!! So it's no wonder they cant get these newfangled electronic voting machines.

4) Hate on us all you want. Maybe we LIKE being the laughing stock of the whole world, or something. PB County farkups FTW.

Not to mention that of the dozen or so counties in Florida that had problems during the 2000 election, all but one were overseen by Democratic Election Supervisors...

I say we give this area back to Spain or France. It's been more then 160 years and all they've been capable of proving is they can fark up even greater than before. Yeah, it has a couple of benefits, hotties in South Beach and oranges, but it's really doing more harm than good. It's time to go.

The nice thing is it scales easily. Each polling station only needs to handle so many people, and that doesn't change when your country has 10 times as many people. You just have 10 times as many polling stations. The work is also spread out over 10 times as many people.

The real problem is that American elections are too farking complicated. We vote for exactly one person, and answer a referendum question if there is one. Its pretty transparent. The party who has winning candidates in the most ridings controls the government. Leader of the party becomes Prime Minister. I can't even begin to understand how Americans decide who the President will be, nor why they vote for everything from sheriffs to school board positions to judges.

When you're counting votes for so many different positions, it gets complicated fast, which I believe is the problem electronic voting tries (and fails) to solve.
