Luckily it sounds just like all the other tracks.

Gilmour sent the CD and
Looked alright from where I stand
Now I'm the man on the outside looking in

Waiting on the first step
Show where this song is kept
Point me down the right line because it's time

Yes, this sure is an exclusive that us digital listeners will never be able to have. Right until some scene group rips the track in 24 bit 96 khz FLAC and promptly sticks it on the Pirate Bay or that other syrup-covered site.

Gavino 2008-09-14 04:15:45 PM
It is awesome and it will be pirated, so no biggie.

/will buy the vynil.

Vinyl didn't stop me from dubbing to tape back in the day, and it sure as hell isn't any harder than hooking my turntable's line out to my sound card.

/better quality too

90% THIS.

I just recently got "Trouble In Dreams" by Destroyer on 2 disc vinyl... it has surprisingly great sound...

and my vinyl copy of "Funeral" by Arcade Fire just has that *something* that the cd copy doesn't.... can't put my finger on it... maybe it's a kind of 'warmth' or something....

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-09-14 05:17:20 PM
P.S.
although, oddly enough, my vinyl copy of "kid A" by Radiohead sounds a little bit *worse* than the cd... hmmmm...

maybe because it's the smaller vinyl size, 10", instead of the normal size... who knows...

SpinStopper [TotalFark] 2008-09-14 05:22:14 PM
Too bad I don't know a single person who still has a turntable.

coloclone 2008-09-14 05:24:08 PM
It will be ripped to torrents soon regardless...

DoctorCal 2008-09-14 05:46:09 PM
I'm perfectly happy with the copy I already have. I don't need a live version from a Pink Floyd cover band.

It hisses and pops like a crackling fireplace, hence the 'warmth'.

Elitist audiophiles piss me off. How do you like you over 9000 dollar wooden knobs for your tube amp receiver??

I'm not so sure he was being serious. Everyone always says vinyl sounds "warmer" and the band he's discussing is called "Arcade Fire."

Dynamic range. Has NOTHING to do with the format, it's the mastering.

Jeff Paine 2008-09-14 06:18:16 PM
Because when I listen to an album, I want to switch sides/LPs after every 2 songs

Exactly. Moreover, digital formats have the capacity for much greater dynamic range than vinyl, because vinyl actually has physical limitations based on groove geometry and manufacturing constraints.

cool?

david gilmour was 'cool' in 1977.

never seen since.

That song is also included on the extras DVD of his recent "Remember That Night" release.

Still very good stuff, but not worthy of extra attention this time around.

The_Time_Master 2008-09-14 09:50:30 PM
Warmer music?

Try Boards of Canada.

Their electronic MP3s are "warmer" than any vinyl you would ever hear.

(hear some samples over on their Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/abeautifulplace (new window) )

hahahahaha
i totally didn't see that connection when i wrote it....
that's pretty neat...

[btw, i thought about the crackling popping when i wrote it, but didn't put it for some reason...
maybe i subconciously thought of the vinyl hissing/crackling and thought of fire/logs etc.] weird.

i was being serious tho...

or maybe it's just my imaginationor something...

oh well.

Damn, the troll is strong in this thread,

/vinyl is king
//why buy CDs when CD-R's and mp3's exist?
///plus, most companies offer free CDs and/or mp3 downloads with vinyl purchase
//just got Brian Wilson's new record on LP
//got a signed 7" with it
//feel sorry for people who think digital > analog

Galaxy of Prawns 2008-09-15 03:12:12 AM
There are good reasons to collect vinyl. One, awesome covers. Two, the "you are there" factor: a lightly used copy of an album (no, pops and scratches are not warmth and are annoying as hell) represents the music as it was originally heard by those who heard it on its original release. CD reissues often contain drastically different mixes than the vinyl (I'm looking at you, Days of Future Passed) and they're almost always remastered to take advantage of a CD's clarity, brightness, and dynamic range.

The "warmth" is caused by a slight boost of certain frequencies and harmonics in the low-mid range. It can be created by using tube amps rather than solid state electronics. It can be created by recording on analog tape, or through modeling (simulation). It can be created through creative EQing of instruments. It can be created from delicate application of compression by an experienced mastering engineer. The perceived warmth of vinyl is largely a placebo, the nostalgia of the Good Old Days, but then again psychology is a major aspect of music. It may be all in your head, but don't let that ruin your listening experience.

Dynamic range is something completely different from what Third_uncle_eno was talking about. Warmth refers to the fact that analog recordings are natural. We hear everything around us in realtime, unaltered, and not split up into tiny 44.1k/sec picees.

Mastering is overlooked by the ones who are buying vinyl purely to be esoteric or hip, so you are correct on that statement. There is also the issue of the Loudness War, which comes through on vinyl or CD for major releases by major artists. I only buy records from small or local artists, or artists that I know use analog or at least 96 KHz/32 bit digital mastering.

The "vinyl resurgence" has left record collectors like myself with mixed feelings. On one hand, it's so awesome to see people getting into the format and into the idea of "collecting" music. It's good to see record labels like Sundazed and now Capitol not only re-releasing records, but they are also directly from analog tapes, and thus purely analog.

On the other, people who normally sell records for dirt cheap now think their copy of the Eagles' Greatest Hits is worth $300. Additionally, it makes stuff harder to come by because of the competition, and thus driving up values on records that would normally be worth less. Of course, this is for pop music generally made within the last 40 years. Stuff I actively collect, shellac 78s and 40s/50s jazz, is still just a collector's thing.

While it's cool that Gilmour is releasing vinyl, making people pay more for a 5 LP set is an old industry trick.

/been collecting RECORDS, including vinyl, my whole life
//analog is better, but that doesn't mean that digital doesn't have its advantages or high points
