A John McCain victory means a 1 in 3 chance of President Palin.

That thought scares the crap out of me.

And it's not just the regurgitation of tough sounding talking points and the use of forceful language to answer questions that called for nuance, it's the almost complete and utter lack of intellectual curiosity about events that occur outside her little provincial fiefdom

She knows the town's gossip but can't bother with understanding the core issues of the Iraq War. Even a drunk at the neighborhood bar exhibits a better grasp of foreign affairs than Palin has done thus far.

See, I'm uncomfortable with Palin--and McCain at this point as well--because I'm Conservative, and neither really are.

McCain, used to be. But he's sided with fiscal radicals, and idiots who can't see past their next dividend, to sell out any hint of actual Conservative values. It's not just his windsockiness, but his inability to actually look further than his nose and his campaign pockets that worries me about him in the Presidency.

His lack of integrity at this point actually worries me slightly less than this lack on issues. But it runs a very close second. And Palin's choice only reinforces this lack on the issues. Her choice was to shore up his position with those folks he should have had in his pocket already, and she is tissue thin on experience, on issues, and on the wrong side of those issues she can articulate a great deal of the time for my taste.

I don't want a zealot near the White House. It's dangerous and it's time the GOP gets out of the shadow of radicals who parade as Conservatives. We need folks in that office that are bright--not intellectually stunted, or worse, willfully ignorant.

She's an intellectually disinterested and dishonest zealot hiding under the guise of a "reformer" when she has reformed very little, save to bring home a lot of pork for her state and constituents while claiming to have done away with it? She has a tissue thin understanding of international relations or even public policy, and her ideas on education and domestic policy make you cringe in the light of the realities of the 21st Century? That this intellectually disinterested and dishonest person will be only a heart beat away from the Presidency, and is the running mate to one of the greatest windsocks of this generation, and doesn't bat an eye at the lies told in her name?

the scary part is that Dad thinks she's wonderful. Then he wondered why I spent most of that convention watching 'Revenge of the Sith'.

somtimes my commentary is a bit TOO subtle.

A soul? For all the talk about how personal (or congenial) she is, she seems positively robotic.

Not saying my impression is accurate, she may be quite nice, but it seems like an act - like she's pretending (rather poorly) to have emotions. Then again, I have been re-watching Dexter lately.

The backlash has been interesting as a rallying cry, and it's been good to sell papers and ad space, but not much more. If anything, it's been interesting to watch the media play with this election like none other.

The media own this puppy by this point. The Fourth Estate is doing their damndest to sell this as a contest that is important, that is close, that demands watching closer.

That should be the real lesson carried from this election. But, I doubt very seriously that the news agencies are going to have that much introspection, or allow their commentators or pundits that much leeway.

well...it really IS an important election. There is a lot at stake here, not the least of which is a couple of supreme court appointments. We're also going to have a LOT of economic issues over the next 4-7 years. Social security and that mortgage company bailout, not to mention paying for the Iraq and Afghanistan adventures. Who gets to deal with those is rather important.

As for 'owning' the event, I think that's untrue. Oh they influence it a great deal...but they no longer control the flow of information and commentary. Too much of that has been taken over by the bloggers and sites like this one. THAT has made the pundits fairly uncomfortable...not that there's anything they can do about it.

I would disagree there--at least for the bulk of the populace. With the amazing amount of Astroturf that has been generated for this campaign, and the sheer volume of blog text devoted to every shill and red herring, we're nearing a point of overload.

It's the Mitnick ploy--throw up so much information and dis-information that it's hard to parse and navigate through. You may find yourself sorting through the mess, eventually, but by that time, there's a narrative in place, and a merry garden path to be led towards.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that the media are getting some of their testicular fortitude, but right now, most of the coverage has less to do with journalistic standards rising, than the need for ad space and generating as much "drama" as possible from the election, and making it infotainment.

In that interview when Gibson asks her about the Bush Doctrine and she says "In what regard Charlie?" and she's got this indignant attitude toward him, like he's the one who doesn't know what he's talking about! I wanted to reach through the screen and smack her.

I'd rather see a slew of anti-Palin Daily Kos threads than a bunch of whiny nanny-state drivel from the Daily Mail. Although I'll check back tomorrow, there will probably be at least four in the queue.

Daily Mail is good for cute animal stories, though.

Quick question, but how does donating to Obama help him? Especially small amounts?

I mean, everyone knows him, the debates don't cost anything, and with the several million he does have should be enough for a few ads.

So how does donating help counter the other candidates? I never fully understood this part.

Gunther 2008-09-14 02:42:38 PM
The NRO wrote this, apparently:

Somebody who knew President Bush well once remarked to me. "You'll notice he never asks questions."

"Why not?" I said.

"Because he doesn't know what it's okay for him not to know."

That's actually a personality quirk I've noticed before in people who've risen above their level of competence. They don't want anyone to know how little they understand about what's going on around them, so they never question anything anyone tells them in case they ask something they should already know the answer to.

For some reason she instantly sent me into an overwhelmingly angry mood. I really do NOT get, at all, this supposed "folksy" appeal she has. She's a lying snake, and that is even more horrifying coming out of her mouth in that accent. She represents the banality of evil in America.

I would guess its the fact that she doesn't have a sincere bone in her body, she will throw out whatever spittle people want to lap up, and there are many people who lap this stuff up as gospel.

Me too. I've talked to lots of other women who feel the same way. Really McCain could not picked a better VP to energize the disaffected feminist Dem vote.

I was so disgusted by the whole primary - grew to hate Hillary and hated the way the media made a big deal about her cleavage and cankles. I was thrilled Obama won but just got tired of the whole election.

Now I'm all politicized again. fark that war mongering fundie GOP biatch. She needs to go away.
