Sad that it happened, I knew the man. I went to middle/high school with his grandson Justin. Later in life he actually spent a lot of his time trying to save sharks from overfishing and pollution. He was a nice guy.

fta: He was 82.

"He wanted to be remembered as a pioneer in his sport," said Mundus' wife of 20 years, Jeanette, 46. "He was an extrovert, a straight shooter. He never held back."

Whatever he did was sharks could be trumped by his marrying a 26 year old when he was 62.

Of course pix are needed of the widow...

Wow.

"He wanted to be remembered as a pioneer in his sport," said Mundus' wife of 20 years, Jeanette, 46.

So (let's see, carry the two...) he was 62 and she was 26 when they got married? Nice trophy!

According to Carl Gottlieb, who wrote the screenplay for Jaws, the character was based on a local man named Craig Kingsbury. Kingsbury has a small part in the film. He's Ben Gardner, the man who greets Richard Dreyfuss' character when he first arrives at Amity Island.
"Hello,"
"Hello back, Young feller. How are ya'?"
It is also Craig Kingsbury's head that Matt Hooper finds in the wrecked boat.

Craig never wears shoes. I like him just because of that.

/Never heard of Frank Mundus.

Shark? I thought it was gerbils he was haunted by and hunted down

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte... just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first gerbil for about a half an hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, Chief? You tell by looking from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know, was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, gerbils come cruisin', so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named "The Battle of Waterloo" and the idea was: gerbil comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the gerbil go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that gerbil he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a gerbil... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many gerbils, maybe a thousand. I know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up, down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon, the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us. He swung in low and he saw us... he was a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and he come in low and three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and starts to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened... waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the gerbils took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

So he dangled a hook with some meat on it in the water and waited for a shark to bite it, WHAT A LEGENDARY 'SPORTSMAN'

If he dived into the water with a knife clutched in his teeth and fought the sharks by jamming a finger in their eyes and stabbing them in the head i'd be impressed. meh.

Oh yeah, that's nice.
Anyone know what his TF handle was?

He's never proven himself in the water. I'm sure he could kill 5 ninjas with his beard-fist, but I doubt he would prove to be a worthy foe to a shark in its natural habitat.

Did you know Chuck Norris grew a great white in his testicles and ejaculated it into the waters of Amityville Beach?

/thought that was common knowledge.
