(Daily Kos) Interesting Obama campaign raises more in August than McCain and the RNC combined. This is the best month in political fund raising history. Not bad for a campaign in panic and collapse   (dailykos.com) divider line 237

Short lived, post RNC, post Palin shift. It'll get back to reality within another week or so, after all the desperate journalists have "front paged" ever rumor that they hear.

Just goes to show that Obama is catering to the rich with his promises of forced abortion, the oppression of religion and the confiscation of all guns.

Yeah, the platform planks were too heavy-handed. Had you said, "free abortions for the promiscuous, the marginalization of religion, and rolling back Heller," you would've produced a solid lure. Keep trying, though, the rich elite angle was a good one to start with.

Obama supports forced abortions on kindergarteners.
When Obama is president, any kid too young to be on welfare on his own will be an abortion candidate.

nashBridges: What math is subby using?

I'm nitpicking, yes, but from this "article":

Senator Barack Obama raised $66 million in the month of August

The RNC and McCain raised 67 mill combined in August

Am I missing something? Obama raised more than McCain, but if these numbers are to be believed the headline is outright false.

McCain's total doesn't have a dollar sign next to it. I assume he raised 67 mills. I think John Edwards' father worked in all over them.

He voted to force kindergarteners to perform abortions on their promiscuous classmates instead of having nap time. Twice.

Pathological liars

As many reporters noticed, Gov. Palin dropped her "Bridge to Nowhere" lie from her stump speech during her trip to Alaska last week, presumably because too many locals knew about her actual role as a major supporter of the project. So I'd been wondering whether the line would return once she returned to the lower 48. Sure enough, today in Carson City, Nevada, she's back at it. (^)

McCain's lies dishonors the Navy's code.

Yesterday I asked what consequences John McCain might face for repeated instances of lying if he were still in the Navy. The UCMJ covers official lies and, more generally, immoral conduct. But there's also the US Naval Academy Honor Concept. The USNA makes clear it's not a 'code', in that it's not a specific set of rules but a general statement of moral conduct. But in the more colloquial sense most of us understand, it's the Academy's honor code, the rules of conduct midshipman are supposed to live by and against which they are judged.

The first two lines of the Concept (^) are ...

Midshipmen are persons of integrity: They stand for that which is right.

They tell the truth and ensure that the full truth is known. They do not lie.

Don't look at the numbers so much as the trend. McCain has had his bump, and the numbers are trending back to Obama.

I saw the first of Obama's attack ads last night. If he wants to pull ahead of McCain, he's going to have to press hard to throw McCain's hypocrisy in everyone's faces.

But the convention bounce has been a little bigger and much longer than everyone thought. Apparently Palin is socially Stone Age enough for the social conservatives to forget that the Republicans have completely forgotten their principles of fiscal responsibility.

I thought the 'panic' supposedly started with the Palin pick, so those numbers shouldn't manifest themselves until the September numbers come in.

But everything that everybody is squabbling about now will disappear once the debates start. Obama's convention speech feels like it happened 2 months ago.

Just a point on the timeline here. The Palin pick was announced on August 29, meaning that only three days of August were post Palin. Given that Obama only raised $10m during the day after her RNC speech, I find it unlikely that he raised more than $20m during those three days, meaning he still had an awesome August without her help. I further doubt that they raised anything close to that, because they would have talked it up the way that they did the bump after her speech. What we are seeing is simply people actually turning on the news and paying attention to politics for the first time.

ManateeGag [TotalFark] 2008-09-14 10:39:20 AM
I think the people are finally seeing that McCain is lying on so many issues and She is just a parrot who keeps saying the same stupid stories about the jet, the bridge and the cook (poor Keith), but doesn't know anything about national and international politics. Just because she can see Russia from her house doesn't mean she's an expert on national security.

That's a pretty good point - but I need to correct your timeline. Palin did not speak until September 3, so that $10 million was not part of the August haul at all.

By most measures, actually, he's pulling back even and the Palin/McCain bounce is ending. Rasmussen is the only poll I've seen in the last few days with positive movement for McCain, and we all know how kooky Rasmussen Reports is.

Question: McCain is taking public financing and Obama is not, correct? Which means that McCain cannot raise money (though the RNC can), correct? So isn't this comparison a little misleading?

Re Palin energizing both bases, I had dinner with a well-off Democratic woman last night. She said she and all her friends "can't sleep" because of Palin. They are raising lots of money for BHO. So yes, she does seem to energize both bases.

McCain can raise money, but it basically just goes right into the RNC coffers.

For all intents and purposes, DNC and RNC money goes to Obama's and McCain's totals, respectfully. This is a coattails campaign. Very few candidates are going to run on their own reputation.
