FTA: The bad news is, [mock news shows] leave viewers less politically informed than those who watch real news, a new study suggests.

The endumbination of the U.S. continues. I've gotten pretty jaded...I'm not sure anything can stop this free-fall. Hopefully our inevitable humbling at the hands of history and the rest of the world looks more like Britain's and less like Rome's.

From TFA:

Research has shown that between 48 and 60 per cent of young adults watched fake news shows to get information about the 2004 American presidential campaign.

Research also shows that between 48 and 60 percent of Canadians get their news from 4 years in the past.

Sadly, some people actually take Stephen Colbert seriously.

If your only news source is CNN, MSNBC, or Fox you'll only have half the story. Read or watch news reports from both sides of the spectrum and decide for yourself.

BS!

The Daily Show has more REAL political news then FOX, NBC, CBS and ABC all together.

//and don't get me started on the Spanish news univison, azteca and telemundo..... they make FOX look like factcheck.org.

I bet faux news is just upset that the Daily Show always makes fun of them, so they funded some researchers to make themselves look credible.

You're not going to have pleasure watching The Daily Show if you haven't been talking to your friends about what's going on, following other kinds of news sources."

TV "news" is no longer journalism and should not be categorized as such. It's just a couple of blowhards who shoot the shiat for a while to fill air time rather than doing actual reporting. I could respect CNN 15 years ago, before Fox came around and started pushing for the lowest common denominator, but now they're all less than worthless.

Turn off the TV and READ!

That's a pretty small sample size: 85. I'd _love_ to know what vehicle they used to reach these conclusions. The truth is every Daily Show watcher I know also views "real news" as well. The Daily Show often does a wonderful job of disseminating some of the hidden bullshiat you see on the big networks.

In fact, in all the years I've watched the Daily Show, I've never once met someone that uses it as their sole source of knowledge -- and that number far exceeds 85.

Exactly. You pretty much have to be reasonably informed about what's going on in the world (through other news sources) to be able to appreciate The Daily Show. My wife is in grad school, so doesn't have as much time as I do to follow the news (so consistently). There are clips from The Daily Show that I will find hilarious, while she doesn't get the joke until I give her the news background info to put the humor into perspective.

I think the basis behind this research is Old Media with sand in their vagina, decrying the lost newspaper subscriptions. I'm amazed they didn't take potshots at Internet Blogs as well. I remember the Daily Show being a staple of my college years (especially the 2000 election), and the sophistication with which they presented the issues was far more accurate than the network and cable news programs.

Go cry, emo journalist.

According to TFA, they showed them selected 20 minute clips from either the Daily Show or NBC or CNN about one selected issue and looked what people knew about that issue afterwards.

Yeah, I'm totally convinced if it went like that.

Daily Show does a way better job of pointing out hypocricy and lies than the so-called real news does.

If everyone watched The Daily Show instead of "Sarah Palin- American Woman hosted by Greta Van Susteren", McCain would be doing a lot worse in the polls and the horrifying prospect of Palin as President would go away

two story's by better respected sources disprove this article

Also, according to CNN, Nielsen Media Research statistics show that when directly compared with O'Reilly Factor viewers, "Stewart's viewers are not only smart, but more educated than O'Reilly's.":

"Daily Show" viewers are 78 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education, while O'Reilly's audience is only 24 percent more likely to have that much schooling. read the rest here

There is NO 'spectrum' in US TV+cable news.

I don't think any show can touch Stewart's guest list.
images.ctv.ca
The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are ABOUT MSM -- and how much they suck. And they also show clips of public figures putting their feet in their mouths, and other things that MSM typically REFUSES to show.
But their main line is revealing TV News for the Suc that it is.
DNRTFA;
FTA: "In a study of about 85 people"
That's not a study; that's a Test Group. The entire Fox newsroom population?
"About" 85? Can we Not Count that high??? Or did we drop a few "skewing" personalities?

/Maybe all those Peabody Awards and Emmys were "purchased".
//Colbert's appearance at the 2006 White House Correspondents dinner was a high-point in American Journalism.

Vangor [TotalFark] 2008-09-14 10:46:50 AM
And yet Jon Stewart would be the first to say and has said that he'd prefer it that way, were it true.

However, I have seen more hard-hitting journalism from the Daily Show than I have from real news sources.

MagFura2 2008-09-14 10:50:15 AM
Any person who uses the term 'fake news shows' should forfeit their right to participate in further conversation. The stories on TDS / TCR involve the actual, verified words and deeds of actual, verified political personalities, so that should rule out the use of the 'fake' appellation right there. 'Fake,' then, must refer to the format - that TDS/TCR do not deal with such matters in a sufficiently substantive or reverential manner.

Indeed.

Mainstream news somehow manages to be petty, exhaustive, and vindictive on the trivial level, and at the same time incurious, fawning, and obsequious at the substantive level. It's quite a feat, but perhaps not one that gives them any room to hand down judgement about what's 'real' news coverage.
