AH, they just don't make solid entire records like that any more!

This. What an amazing piece of work O:MC was. Holds up well over time.

Hmm. If I go out cruising this afternoon, I'll be sure to take my copy of Mindcrime with me.

/and get the priest as well

Thanks subby. A little before my time, but Op:MC is probably my favorite metal album.

BigBaldRon: AH, they just don't make solid entire records like that any more!

Yep, that's proven by Op:MC2

I loves me some Operation:Mindcrime. It's my most-listened album by about two orders of magnitude over anything else.

One of the best albums ever

What a great band - their music stood head and shoulders over most of their contemporaries. In an age where it would have been easy to sell out and make oodles of money appealing to 12-year-old kids, Queensryche stuck to their guns and produced quality material....and made oodles of money anyway. Kudos guys.

Good track, but that's a lot of prancing perming lotion right there.

/Does not miss the 80s.

Yes 'they' do. Unless you're talking about Queensryche specifically.

In my top 5 albums of all time. It came out while I was in college, and my CD laser practically burned through my first copy while getting through school.

//O:MC2 sucks 5 kinds of weiners.

Absolutely love Mindcrime.

But Queensryche hasn't been the same since DeGarmo left.

Nothing better that the sound of the 'Ryche in the morning. If they would only release the whole album for Rockband, that would truly rock, although I would feel bad for anyone who had to sing the whole album.

// still have all the early QR on cassette out of sentimental value

This is not heavy metal, it's prog rock and it is horrible.

i just remember doing...what they told me...told me...told me

//had an older gf at the time, who told me she just gave away tix to some concert by some band she never heard of..queensryche or something...damn near had to choke a biatch

umm, no. that would be prog metal, and it kicks major ass.

doctorwormwood 2008-09-14 05:36:08 PM

Yup. Same here. I would listen to this album on my headphones almost daily for several weeks.

/I remember how it started...

Listen youngster, before you get off my lawn, I just want you know it's heavy and it's metal, therefore it's heavy metal. It also happens to be progressive, yes. Got a problem with that? Then hurry up off the lawn.

TheRockinDonkey 2008-09-14 08:33:25 PM
To be fair, I think bands like Metallica re-defined "metal". As a result, most of the bands that were defined as "metal bands" in the 80's are considered rock bands today.

That said, Operation Mindcrime is probably one of the best albums to come out in the '80s.

Scottybobotty 2008-09-14 09:29:35 PM
I have seen them twice, once they did Mindcrime beginning to end, WITH Pamela Moore.

Good stuff. Much love for the boys in QR.

/One of the few that liked OM:2.
//Take Cover is pretty good, too....

As much of a fan as I am, I can't help but agree with that last line.

Right about the time Ryche started to suck, Dream Theater took up the mantle for prog metal. I love me some Mindcrime, but Scenes from a Memory kicked all kinds of ass too.

Greatest concept album. Ever.

dbirchall [TotalFark] 2008-09-15 10:15:59 AM
Lots of progmetal is polarizing, love it or hate it kind of stuff. Queensryche were no exception. I love (most) stuff by them, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Savatage...

One prog band I absolutely cannot stand (mostly due to the vocals which sound like a frickin' boy's-choir reject to me) is Coheed & Cambria.

Sadly, this. He's a corporate pilot now, not even in the business anymore.

/also in my top five of all time
//listened to it flying back from the west coast this weekend

You really think so? I'd say just the opposite - they were one of the few prog bands that bridged the (rather large) gap between sophisticated obscurity and mainstream sensibility, with remarkable success.

This is my third favorite concept album.

First would be BE by Pain of Salvation.

Second would be Scenes from a Memory by Dream Theater.

Dreadstone 2008-09-15 04:03:22 PM
Eyes of a Stranger was for the longest time my favorite song well into the 90s. I miss the old 'Ryche, but we shouldn't mourn for what's lost but remember them for their peak. That said, Empire wasn't that bad and Promised Land had a few gems as well.

kab 2008-09-17 03:51:30 AM
Late to this one... what a great great disc OM is.

Am I the only one who thinks DT peaked with 'Awake' ?

Or that Fates Warning: Awaken the Guardian was one of their best (aside from Perfect Symmetry)?

/never mind me, I'm rambling.
//sweet dreams, you bastards.
