My sister (we're a family of AZ natives) has a bumper sticker on her car -- "Welcome to Arizona. NOW GO HOME!"

We natives don't really believe in hospitality. And by native, I mean 5th generation and she's married to a Navajo.

Jeez. You'd think over time they'd forgive that one little massacre by Cortez.

When a translator finally arrived it turned out that the villagers just really wanted to know if the tour members had read Sutter Cane.

I walked into an auto body shop wearing a jacket and tie. Some employees mistook me for an insurance adjuster. Luckily, they ran away instead of beating me up.

"Holidaymakers"?

Oh those Brits are so cute when they try to speak English with their made-up words. It would have been soooo much easier to understand if they just said "Vacationers".

// Vacation-makers?

/// I kid, of course.

RavingRaven 2008-09-14 09:04:39 AM
According to the article, that trip costs about 2,000 pounds. That's an arm and a leg. The villagers were only there with their axes to collect.

/No?
//Hey, I just woke up, cut me some slack.
///With a villager's pickax.

This story ain't shiat.

Read about what land surveyors had to encounter as they were trying to establish the Public land survey system in North America in the 1800s.

They had to divide the land into township and range. 640 acres to a square mile, they had to set a point every 2640 feet in a grid.

They would have to avoid Native Americans scalping them, dying from starvation, or being killed by wildlife like bears or mountain lions.

To this day I am waiting to be run off someones property with a shotgun.

Anyone considering traveling to Peru, do it! Amazing country with a cool history. The Cordillera Blanca is a beautiful area with 6000m peaks and fascinating trails and ruins. Chavin as well as Chan-Chan near Trujillo are worth seeing.

I just did the 4 day hike along the Incan trail to Machu Picchu in April, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Honestly though it was the most incredible experience of my life and anyone who is remotely interested and in a position to do so should do it.

You do need to make sure you have a couple days to acclimatize, as well as be in moderately good shape (at least good enough shape to know how to pace yourself, the climb on the second day is bad, very bad).
