I read that as "wampeter"

So it goes.

Whisky, please.

Whisky is plenty fashionable. Tartan fabrics should be removed. Maybe that can mix with the whisky somehow.

Scots are too busy running secret societies that rule the planet to get too involved with popular fashion--other than creating the classics like school-girl plaid skirts and make-the-ladies-curious men's kilts.

o0weno 2008-09-14 04:11:15 AM
If it ain't Scotch, it's crap indeed.

Scotch is the finest alcohol there is. Then comes bourbon, then comes whiskey.

After that the Irish, and the Canadians, have some very nice bottles of engine solvent that they want to sell you.

The good people of Scotland should consider themselves lucky that they are not seen as "leaders of popular fashion". The whole fashion industry is a complete scam and always has been.

I'll have to remember that one. But it does taste good in a Manhattan. Although, I'd prefer to get a Rob-Roy (Manhattan with scotch instead of Bourbon), but it sounds too nancy of an order.

This. Lately Scottish whiskey seems to be more about advertising and and less about quality. Don't get me wrong, there are still some damn fine Scottish whiskeys, but it's outnumbered by some pretty awful crap.

Blasphemy. I assume you're not stupid and don't buy the blends looking for quality so as far as malts go - which ones do you object to? I don't think I've had any that are really bad but some that weren't to my taste. I have no great fondness for Jura, for example.

FAIL. There is no such thing as Scottish whiskey. And even if there were, all that advertising that you seem to be so affected by is only due to it being trendy in the US at this time. If you're looking to advertising to tell you what to purchase, you're doing it wrong.

The true function of bourbon is to break in the barrel. Any barrell is good enough for bourbon, only those that have proven themselves worthy can be used for real whiskey.

Looking at the content of the article, the reason people who don't live in Scotland go to events like the Scottish Fashion Industry is biatching about is to celebrate Scottish history and heritage.

I'm pretty sure there's a reason my family originally left that country, and I really can't care what the Scots' Fashonistas are doing today. But I don't mind learning more about my ancestry.

Bollocks. The whisky takes on the characteristics of what used to be in the barrel. The type of barrel used has an enourmous impact on what the finished product will be.

You can taste the bourbon in, for example, Glen Livet 12 yr old. Its a bit like rough Jack Daniels.

Even more pronouced is the diff between Lagavulin 16 yr old and Lagavulin distiller's edition. The latter is just the former after 9 months in in Pedro Ximénez barrels.

/does not like Glen Livet

Peener waving is a sign of poor endowment. It's amazing how many advocates of Scotch, Bourbon, or other forms of Whisk(e)y are hung like baby carrots.

This is even more pathetic than Mac advocacy.

Gee, can't you take a joke? I happen to prefer Scotch. Most bourbons taste too sweet to me. So, in order to rationalize my preference I must denigrate bourbon drinkers and ridicule their arguments. If you like Lagavulin are you partial to Islays and have you tried Laphroaig? In my opinion it has as much of the full-bodied peatiness but with a bit smoother finish. I also enjoy Jura. About as smokey as a good cigar without the acrid nose.

queenstacela 2008-09-14 11:33:59 AM
While you all are talking about the slam on alcohol, I seeing the slam on the Scottish history. Looking at that history, I am glad that there are still some that want to preserve it. The country lost a lot to it being overrun at different parts of its history. Keeping its heritage is important.

Whisky is no laughing matter my friend!

I do like Laphroaig, though I find it less smooth but more a lot more phenolic. And Jura, although I find the latter to be not at all smoky. Its on special at Tesco at the mo' if you're in the UK.

I really recommend visiting Islay sometime, its stunningly beautiful and wild. In the gulf stream, so a lot better weather than the mainland.

Cheers.

Seriously? Budweiser as a pinnacle? Ah, well, to each his own.

So, as a scotch/bourbon/whisky noob, what is the best brand to try for a first timer? Asking for guidance here.

(NOT Budweiser, thank you very much) and would like to know overall opinion on what/where to begin
