(From Article)"They kind of lose their appeal as cute cuddly critters in the pet industry when kids get them after a couple years, and they tend to get released into the wild or traded around, not cared for," Blakely said.

Since when were turtles cute and/or cuddly?

They are not. Especially if you have a snapping turtle hooked on your fishing line. That was a nightmare.

They weren't snappers. They were sliders.
One of my neigbors used to fish for snappers for soup.
She caught one the size of a washtub once.
She dragged it (she wsas in her 60s mind you ) by the tail up to her house and chopped its head off with an axe, and started prepping it and that's when my mother came over to her yard and dragged me home.
I wanted to stay for lunch, too.

it's not THAT easy to get salmonella from reptiles.
We have 9 Diamondback Terrpains and a Veiled Chameleon...

you buy proper filtration for your aquariums, they don't require "daily" upkeep either...

the more you know n stuff.

how do you get proper filtration for 700 plus turtles?

Used to have some sliders and musk turtles.

I have two little guys. Not the best pets, but they are fun to watch and do have personality. So sad how people buy them at fairs then lose interest after a few days. Can always find tons of free turtles on craigslist.

/won't somebody think of the turtles?!

I have had 2 red eared sliders for about 15 years. I had no idea until today that they were illegal to own in Oregon. I will concur that they make a heckuva mess and are difficult to keep the tank clean.

durbnpoisn 2008-09-13 06:31:25 PM
Here in NJ, we have an outright ban on Sliders smaller than 4". Evidently, that's when the salmonella thing is an issue.
Larger than that no one seems to care.

The only thing I've seen worse than people hawking baby sliders, is baby sea turtles.

I ran across a family a couple of weeks ago at the shore. They found a little baby sea turtle and had it in a bucket. They were going to bring it home.

I was like, "do you have any idea how to keep one of these?"
"No... But I saw a box of 'Instant ocean' at the pet shop last week... I figured that's all I need."

//Facepalm

I said, "Look, I don't want to sound like a know-it-all... But if you don't already have something suitable to hold an animal like this, it ain't gonna survive."

That was really the last word I could have in it. I'm sure the poor little guy is long dead and flushed down a toilet by this time...

Salacious Salad 2008-09-13 06:33:27 PM
"If released, wildlife officials fear the turtles will grow and begin taking over native species' habitats."

Translation: we are going to kill them.

The turtles are illegal in Oregon and Washington

lol wut? i live in WA and own a red-ear slider that was sold to me by petco. they still sell them, so does petsmart. not illegal unless under 4" shell length.

NYZooMan 2008-09-13 09:21:26 PM
I don't think the salmonella is any worse with the baby turtles, except that it's the baby ones that kids WANNAHAVE! when they see one as though they're little battery toys. Especially when they were sold for pennys and tortured to death for their short little lives.
Adult ones at least cause the buyer to think for a microsecond first.
