I flew into Akron, OH the other day and sitting at the airport was a private 747. Asked the people there what the story was with it, its owned by a church. Yes, a church in Ohio owns one of the BIGGEST AND MOST EXPENSIVE AIRPLANES ON EARTH.

Well, that headline is just a tab bit misleading now isn't it subby. But as a Catholic myself, I'll only say a tab bit.

That, and their one of the largest charitable organizations in the world. Did you run out of room to type that? By all means, don't let facts get in the way of a good inflammatory statement.

It's the false idols he's upset about. DUH! The Catholic church isn't false. It's the one true church of GodTM

Jesus didn't like organized religion.

He did, however, like prostitutes and copious amounts of hallucinogens.

I'd rather hang out with Jesus than go to church.

Give that subby an ice cold brewski!

(You know who owns the largest collection of Pagan artifacts and gold? That same Catholic Church)

Catholic Priests like some of that bowing action. Especially when it involves alter boys.

It wouldn't be so bad except the the largest recipient of those charitable contributions is the clergy of the church.

from the article, his holiness was quoted thusly: "Have not money, the thirst for possessions, for power and even for knowledge, diverted man from his true destiny?"

I do not know which I find more disturbing, that the pope (considering himself a man) is ignoring that fact that he and the powers that be in the catholic church possess and control nearly unlimited wealth and possessions and thus have been diverted from their destiny, or that he does not consider himself and his fellow catholic leaders as men at all, but as higher beings? either way, it is a frightening development.

If by charitable, you mean spending millions of dollars to say that condoms are bad, and protecting priests from sex scandals, then yes, they contribute alot more than anyone else.

I started to type out a serious reply to this, but no, this morning isn't the morning for that.

If people really want to know about the Catholic Church, they'll do research and realize why the Church has all those nice things. But this will just be a masturbatory thread for anti-Christians and anti-Catholics no matter what, so flame on.

eqtworld: Was he sitting on his throne, underneath the gold plated dome in the Vatican at the time?

Came in here to say *exactly* THIS.

Hundreds of millions of Cataholics worldwide suffer from poverty, while their "superiors" live better than kings. I'll take a baptist living on nothing, or a Lutheran Missionary starving in Africa over the 'cannibals' any day. Even some atheists are more selfless and self-sacrificing than the turds who run the Catholic church. Ordinary Catholic people are okay, but their leaders all need to be inquisitioned.

Oakenshield: Jesus...liked lecturing prostitutes and copious amounts of hallucinogens told his followers that a man who at another woman and thinks, "man, I'd like to hit that" has already committed adultery in his heart.

That's cool, but we're talking about the Catholic Church right now. They believe that absolution is granted by God through the priest, not by the priest. Sola Fide is a specifically Protestant belief. And salvation is never certain.

The more you know.

Most of the wealth possessed by the Catholic Church is in paintings and other artifacts that have been donated to the church over the millenia. And I don't think they're liquid assets are as limitless as you proclaim.

The dome of The Vatican is not gold plated (The Vatican doesn't have a dome). In fact, neither is the dome of St. Peters.

Also, 10s of billions isn't all that much with so many people. Actually I'm surprised the Church isn't worth quite a bit more.

Net worth is assets minus liabilities. The Roman Catholic Church, as an integrated entity, has operations in every country of the world and has had such for centuries. Except for a few dioceses, the assets probably outweigh the liabilities materially.

Looking at the Vatican alone, the differential would be wider yet.

I blame New Pope. I still hope this is some sort of Catholic marketing ploy, and they're just waiting to reintroduce Pope Classic.
