I've noticed here that the signs stop displaying your speed and simply flash once you are 20 kph over the limit.

/way to take all the fun out of it

ckellingc 2008-09-13 01:01:55 PM
I know cops that do the same thing

tbell83 2008-09-13 01:02:25 PM
I used to do that on my bike. Using a car is cheating.

Exekute 2008-09-13 01:03:03 PM
If I were to set a high score (which of course I wouldn't) it would be drunk, around a corner, in a neighborhood (25 limit), doing 58. Knowing me, I would have tried for 60 but couldn't make. This, of course, didn't happen because it would be terribly illegal.

As a maker of speed displays, I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

A friend told me about one of those radar display trailers set up on a highway just outside of Phoenix, AZ where he lived several years ago. After the first weekend, there was a white stripe and the word "START" spray painted across the highway 1/4 mile before it.

/and lots of peel-out marks
//He clocked his restored 240Z there

Where I work, the company owns 12 or so buildings and acres of land that surround them.

The road in front of my building is straight and about a half mile long. There's a stop sign at the beginning and a round-a-bout at the other end.

People were speeding down that road, so the company put up one of those "Your Speed Is:" machines at the far end.

Before the first day was over, people were doing hole-shots at the first stop sign and keeping it hammered in order to get high-score. Cell phone camera in hand.

The machine was gone in a week, but the tire marks lasted for months.

SwallowTheKnife 2008-09-13 01:23:12 PM
If you want to reduce the speed then simply set up a trap that has CONSEQUENCES, not something that taunts you as you drive past it.

/Had one down the road.
//Old people slammed on their brakes when the sign told them they were going 4km/h over. Everyone else sped up to get the light to flash... like a carnival game! Yeaaay!

143 in a 67 Buick Riviera. At least that's what the sheriff said.

I'd went faster, but the barrel speedometer only went to 140, back to 0 would have been 150. Had it wound around to 5 again. Needed miles of interstate to reach top speed and slow down.

430 Wildcat FTW

akede 2008-09-13 01:29:47 PM
I'm guilty. But in all fairness, they typically put these signs in areas where the speed limit really should be increased. They're littered all throughout Ballard (Seattle, WA) in 30mph where people normally go 40mph as the norm. It's a business area, not residential.. no reason for such a low speed limit.

tuxq 2008-09-13 01:30:00 PM
We had one set to 35 and blinks at 41 locally for about a month... one day I started about a 1/4 mile back in a jeep cherokee... i hit that thing doing 84mph and laughed the whole farking way... I was much younger, of course... those days have gone by... kind of.

DrForrester 2008-09-13 01:31:45 PM
So much fail in one article.

The motorist accelerate

And its understood

nothing in-between their ears

Then you have the very idea of putting up radar without a speed camera. What the hell do they expect?

And finally, the picture of the happy couple, frowning as if the radar itself killed their daughter.

They never show the bloodied victims of car crashes in driving courses anymore -- at least in my state. Perhaps if some of these people had the opportunity to see the graphic potential consequences of their actions, they might be more cautious.

I thought that sort of thing was pretty much a right of passage.

Mine was a 280ZX, so rusty there were bits falling off it.

/125mph according the the speedo.

I had an '87 5.0... it was a dealer demo model with all the extras; digital display, moonroof... something went funny with the electrical system, I replaced the whole damn thing and still wouldn't start some days... finally traded it in on a '94 T-bird, but I think the '87 was still my favorite ever.

Good Behavior Day 2008-09-13 02:03:57 PM
There's a street in town where there's been a lot of speeding and a few fatal accidents. The residents complained and the city put out one of those radar speed signs. It was there for a couple weeks before someone crashed into it.

I did 135 miles per hour in my Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. It took a few miles to wind out that last 10 mph tho. It was damned quick up to 120 and the 5th gear redline. 6th was strictly a overdrive with no guts whatsoever.

/The speedometer went up to 150 or 160, I forget which.

160mph in a 45mph zone.

old ass ford LTD with a 460ci (that's like 7.7L for you youngsters) police interceptor engine.

Litig8r 2008-09-13 02:11:43 PM
Indicated 173 mph on a lightly modified GSXR600.

And I learned, on that day, that the Ford Crown Vic (Interceptor package + I assume light additional mods) has a top speed of somewhere in the range of 140 to 150 mph.

And yes, despite the mantra they love to chant, you can outrun the radio.

SwiftFox [TotalFark] 2008-09-13 02:15:52 PM
I like these signs. They revealed to me that my speedometer always reads 4 MPH above the actual speed when I'm driving above 20.

Ima4nic8or 2008-09-13 02:15:54 PM
This deserves a dumbass tag and an obvious tag. A dumbas tag for the "shocked" residents. An obvious tag for the fact that people try to set the high limit on radar signs.

AuCinaoaMie 2008-09-13 02:17:30 PM
Speed kills. Influenza kills. Guns kill. Knives kill. Ebola kills. People kill. Dogs kill. Cats kill. Ants kill. Plane crashes kill. Famine kills. Pestilence kills.

Big farkin deal. Its called population control. The problem is cars are now so safe for the driver and occupants that stupid people are not culled from the herd often enough.

I stopped driving fast when the HP in my "toy" went over 500. I actually drove slower, because going fast was not a challenge like it was in a 180hp car. I stopped street racing because things happen really fast when you can do 0-60 in less than 3 seconds. Good thing I was two lengths ahead of the chevy I was racing. I wasnt even that old, and I still drive over the limit on a regular basis.

bcroz 2008-09-13 02:27:26 PM
150+ in a new Vette on 696 in Detroit. At the time, 696 had only been open a week or so and was very smooth. Stuff starts to blur on the sides of the road at 130. Worked at a dealership at the time, hence not my Vette.

/not 10 ft tall and bullet proof anymore
