God Bless our native Beaumonters... That was a white ass.

And reporter live in Galveston just asked a civilian walking the streets, "Where you from?"

I wish he would've replied: "I just flew in from Chicago, and boy are my arms tired!"

Frankly, I'm disappointed. I expected death, mayhem, destruction, total ruin. What do I get. Some white ass streaker.

Fark you Ike. Fark you NWS.

Well, the problem isn't lack of oil. The problem is that the refineries are down right now. Petroleum doesn't crack itself into octane ya'know.

Yesterday afternoon everybody was rushing to buy gas before the prices went up. I myself filled up for 40 bucks just to see the price up 20 cents later. Crazy.

I had to buy my gas, beer, cigarettes, and chronic before it became undesirable to go outside & I wasn't alone.

/everybody at the pump had a white car I thought it was funny
//everyone else must have thought me an ass.

I was really hoping they'd do the great Cartoon President thing again this year, but the relative chances of today's kids not having a damn clue who Tom & Jerry are pretty high considering that the Cartoon Network shows programs with names like "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" and "Chowder."

No wonder kids are so fat these days.

That is precisely what the SOR is for, supply disruptions in terms of crude. If the problem is refining capacity as was the case with Katrina, then releasing more oil from our reserves wouldn't help at all.

A stranded freighter with 22 men aboard made it through the brunt of the storm safely, and a tugboat was on the way to save them.

So at least the stranded freighter made it.

Just checked in with my family in League City and Texas City. The levees held and all are well. They are out and about surveying the damage --- Lots of limbs and trees down and most of the fences are gone. But thankfully everyone's houses are in good shape. They will be cleaning up for awhile. The only concern I have ---- I have a friend that is a police officer that had to stay in Galveston --- I have not heard from him since yesterday afternoon .... hopefully he is ok.

From an earlier post from someone else:

Directv 361 is KHOU, Channel 11

Terron 2008-09-13 12:25:06 PM
If I recall, it was KHOU that pointed a finger at New Orleans residents after Katrina asking "How could these people stay knowing the storm thats coming"

And then seeing this morning on KHOU "90000 residents ignored evacuations" and "1800 calls overnight to 911"

Oh the irony ;)

atlanta_ufo 2008-09-13 12:27:05 PM
The people that stayed will be whining soon because there is no power.

I'd like to take my pants off to show solidarity also but my wife won't let me.

Tennozan 2008-09-13 12:29:26 PM
From the morning news:
About half of the nearly 300,000 residents of coastal Brazoria County stayed behind in defiance of evacuation orders, officials told NBC affiliate KPRC of Houston, as did about half of the 110,000 people in Beaumont. Tens of thousands more in other areas also disregarded the National Weather Service's warning...

Let. Them. Drown.

Someone posted in the prev. Ike thread that the "surprise" storms usually kill the most - and that makes sense.
Days worth of warnings, regardless of an absolute degree of accuracy, should still be heeded. Right?
Folks that feel they MUST disregard evacuation warnings because.... well .... WTF are they thinking?
Helping the people who stayed is like rewarding a child who is waving around a loaded gun.

What's with the moran anchor lady on CNN? There are graphics all over the screen saying Ike is a category 1 hurricane, they have been saying all morning it's a category 1 hurricane, then the anchor lady says to the weather lady just now "Ike is a tropical storm now right?". The weather lady looks shocked and says "No, it's still a category 1 hurricane." Then the moran anchor lady goes "How come we are still calling it a hurricane if it's not over water anymore?" The weather lady looked at her like she was nuts...which she was. Does the anchor lady think as soon as a hurricane hits land we can no longer call it a hurricane???

Oh, shiat.

To repost my stuff from the old thread;

Just talked to my parents in 77019, lots of trees down, no power, lots of water on the road, but nothing seriously bad.

/except those trees
//twelve beautiful old trees

and

To all you dumb sluts complaining about gas prices, 19% of US refining capacity is out right now. Oil prices will be falling since nothing can consume it, and gas prices will be rising since nothing can produce it.

/yes, it turns out Houston is a good place to have around

Okay, I have a question, apologies if it's been asked before.

How come staying behind when a hurricaine hits is deserving of everyone telling you that you're going to be darwined because you're stupid, yet GOING to the hurricaine with cameras and a news crew is acceptable?

If some stupid news crew can survive it, then why not the people that live there?

The streaker on The Weather Channel (NSFW?)

Scroll to about the 38 second mark where the reporter goes "We are dealing with a pretty wild STREAK of weather"

Shortly after a streaker goes by...twice.

From the other thread, regarding Newport in League City

For Richard Roma- Just talked to Mom, still no further damage. The wind is still blowing pretty hard so they can't go out (and Dad is asleep). She sees some large branches in the neighbor's yard- but that tree is over 40 years old. All of their trees (all planted since Alicia) are still standing. The street is not flooded.

I think it's probably ok for you to go to sleep. You may have some ceiling damage from blown in water, but it's unlikely you have a tree through your roof. Your fence is probably going to need some work.

Oh yes- they also report that the water pressure is low- they have plenty of bottled water.

I hope that eases your mind some.

The reporters and emergency crews were staying in a hotel rated for a cat 5 hurricane, not many homes, if any, are rated that. Plus, its not surviving the hurricane only, its the lack of infrastructure (power, water) and food after the hurricane passes. One of the reasons to leave is to get to an area that the infrastructure has a better chance of surviving and where you have a better chance of finding a meal.
