The saddest part of the Palin discourse or any recent political discourse is that the common interests no longer matter. It is nothing but a rhetorical cage match over the pros and cons (or pros and neocons) of special interest issues that are exclusively in the far edges of either side of the political spectrum.

We all need breathable air, safe water and food, a functional society, viable energy and economy. Yet, the arguements always end up about religion, abortion, trickle down economics versus a viable middle class, separation of church and state versus government for and by God, etc.

I am afraid that our current society is going to be ripped apart someday by this media and special interest driven circus. We are no longer Amercians it seems. We are repubicans or democrats first and Amercians and neighbors second. That is sad.

There are two islands in that strait, Big Diomede and Little Diomede, where you can "see Russia from Alaska" and vice versa. Little Diomede is a small island that belongs to Alaska and the US, and Big Diomede is a small island that belongs to Russia. You might be able to see each island from the other, but in no way and from no island in Alaska can you see Russia.
