MSNBC about fifteen minutes ago:

"Sarah Palin did great, and less than 1,000 Americans know what the Bush Doctrine is. She proved well under pressure."

Yeah, but MSNBC is "liberal."

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-09-12 11:25:25 AM
Seems to me it's a natural reaction to the nonsense and hyperpolarization of the campaigns and supporters themselves.

scseth 2008-09-12 11:25:48 AM
Yes. But then again, what is objectivity in a subjective world?

Number41 2008-09-12 11:25:51 AM
Ugh, Mark Penn. Please stop giving him a stage.

MSNBC wants submitter to know that he is an obvious neo-con Rovian shill who's totally wrong on this

Not only partisan, but equally partisan. If there's a slight bend, the extremists point it out as evidence that the other side is just as bad as them.

tweekster 2008-09-12 11:27:06 AM
Not just partisan but blatantly afraid to cover anything of substance.

It has been such a long time they actually had to do in depth reporting I don't even think they know what that is anymore.

It is just plain pathetic.

whconner4 2008-09-12 11:27:22 AM
The media is bias towards whatever the narrative that brings in the viewers might be. Fox is bias towards one side and pushes a specific political agenda. Sadly, sometimes both of those biases come together to give the GOP a ridiculous advantage.

I Said [TotalFark] 2008-09-12 11:27:42 AM
Yeah. Wow. That's never happened before. In fact, until yesterday I've never heard the term "liberal media". Man what a groundbreaking story in a truly historic election for the media.

TheNewJesus 2008-09-12 11:27:57 AM
I believe that was the idea when the GOP started humping that whole LIBERAL MEDIA thing. The watching public is now paranoid about everything they see on the news.

The politicians like this just fine, as long as they can warp the stories toward their agenda.

Maybe we should start requiring kids to take journalism classes.

MmmBadEggs 2008-09-12 11:28:11 AM
All news organizations and media outlets are biased, and always have been, and always will be. They're run by people with opinions, not robots...

There is no source for objective news. It would be great if there was, but there isn't.

pudding7 [TotalFark] 2008-09-12 11:28:32 AM
bubbaprog: "Sarah Palin did great, and less than 1,000 Americans know what the Bush Doctrine is. She proved well under pressure."

But only 4 are trying to get into the White House.

If anything, the media scrutiny needs to step a notch. Everything they're asking Palin they've asked Obama, McCain, and Biden. They've just had 2 years to do it. Palin gets it all in 2 months, and rightly so.

LeafyGreens 2008-09-12 11:28:42 AM
The "fourth estate" doesn't exist anymore. All we have now are suck-ups to whomever is popular, powerful, or both.

Whiteston 2008-09-12 11:28:48 AM
Face it, anything NBC is liberal (run by liberals, etc.)
Fox is conservative (no matter how balanced they try to be)

Everyone other news outlet is slightly liberal and in love with Obama and Palin because they are news and their only agenda is that they are interested in dirty laundry.

Lagaidh 2008-09-12 11:29:00 AM
Well duh. Advertising is what rules the world by forming popular opinion. News media is a function of advertising.

Did they really say that? I was hoping that maybe someone in the MSM would point out she's an idiot and we could move on from there. Looking at the EV counts lately and Obama's numbers over the last two months or so, I think he's toast.

tweekster 2008-09-12 11:29:33 AM
TheNewJesus: The politicians like this just fine, as long as they can warp the stories toward their agenda.

Even the candidates are getting sick of it. Look at mccain's response to the lipstick on a pig comment. It is pretty bad when the media report something just to create drama and even the person that could benefit tells them to STFU.

THIS is an asinine comment.
Yes, MSNBC leans far to the Left as Olbermann, Mathews, etc. show.

This does NOT mean that everything single, tiny scrap of news OR commentary is going to show that tilt; only that major of the time it does.

At least Fox separates news from commentary, something that most the other outlets don't do, especially MSNBC.

Brilliant on the part of Fox:

1. Create a partisan and biased news network.
2. Call everyone else partisan liberal lefty commies and refer to self as "fair and balanced".
3. Watch the poor, white, uneducated line up to drink the Kool Aid.
3. Profit!

/Wait, that would be a lot funnier if it wasn't right on the money.

They showed the video where she sounds like a dumbass, and then raved and raved about how great she was.

It was ridiculous. It was Iraqi Minister-level cognitive dissonance.

Also, when did the "National Security" = "Energy policy" thing start?

"Tell me about your ability to lead our nation to war."

"I know a lot about energy, and knowing is half the battle. Fortunately, I've got G.I. Joe to help me with the rest. He's got swivel elbows!"

Maybe we should start requiring journalists to take journalism classes...and bloggers, and politicians.

And journalism schools need to teach more than one ethics course in the curriculum.

And we can also remember journalists are not gods. They are not soothsayers. They're people. Their opinions are worth only the same as everybody elses. Take them with a grain of salt.

Even Walter Cronkite got things wrong. And Edward R. Murrow. Stop elevating these people to give them power.

Are you claiming that GE is "liberal"?

ObiJuan 2008-09-12 11:32:21 AM
The two things that really matter to corporate media are 1) what brings in the most ratings/revenue and 2) who will cost them the least amount of taxes/give the least amount of regulation.

The answer to 1) is sensational journalism, fear, sex, and conflict

The answer to 2) is the Republican party

That there pretty much explains the state of corporate media today.

Exactly. The only bias is more of a bandwagon mentality to hype something meaningless up. They are vultures with no real allegiance to either side (except the two you mentioned)

no, that means that matthews, olbermann, and maddow lean left. and really, chris matthews doesn't, but that's neither here nor there. that's not even half of their programming.

mfaby: At least Fox separates news from commentary, something that most the other outlets don't do

you're kidding, right?

mediaho 2008-09-12 11:32:34 AM
The media needs to stop kowtowing to the extremists and stop trying to be "balanced." That's not your farking job. Give us information, not two extremists arguing back and forth. If one person denies the holocaust and another claims 11 million people died in it, the truth doesn't lie somewhere in the middle and both sides are not equal. This goes for so many things.

Sarah Palin may have said, "Sambo beat the biatch"

Barack Obama denies he's a Muslin, but is that enough?

There is no way to be absolutely sure anything you might eat will not kill you. Therefore you should eat arsenic, because it is just as good as anything else you might eat.

I thought the same thing. I was watching it last night and they went from "Coming up......OMG another plane has just hit the WTC!" to "Does your kitty litter stink!"

Cythraul 2008-09-12 11:33:59 AM
Ah, yes. I remember the good ol' days, when news sources attempted (but not always succeeded) in remaining as non-partisan and non-biased as possible. Yep, back in the good times, when news reporters would just state the facts, and then shut the f*ck up, and not give their opinions about a news story.

I want those times back.

whconner4 2008-09-12 11:34:01 AM
Fox News is simply not equal to anything that has come before it or currently exists in terms of media bias. Could that point be any clearer? How do people deny this? How can the debate about media bias (the article) so farking often not include a discussion Fox News and the change it brought to news in general? WTF?

i called that last night. they wouldn't spin it, they would just outright lie about it. we have moved to the next level of orwellian doublespeak. down is no longer not quite down if you look at it from this perspective... down is now up, plain and simple.

Seriously? Less than .0003% of the population of the United States can identify what the Bush doctrine is? My co-worker, who has some interest but doesn't follow this stuff, said, "I'm not exactly sure what the Bush doctrine is... wouldn't it be the idea of a preemptive first strike?"

Yeah, no one could possibly understand the Bush doctrine. It's only been in common usage for half of a decade.

The fact that McCain is going up in the polls just adds fuel to the thought that us Americans are easily mislead. McCain has offered nothing of substance, and his campaign is based on misinformation about Obama and whining about perceived attacks against him and his VP.

Yet, it is working.

BlaineIsAPain 2008-09-12 11:34:58 AM
It's not the partisanship that bothers me. It's the sensationalism. It's farking pathetic. They talk about flag pins, lipstick on pigs, and how people are supposed to vote based on their race, gender, or location. No one in the MSM has the balls to ask hard questions or call candidates out on their bullshiat and lies.
