My mom drove nothing but VDub buses from 1961 until my mom died in 1992; I had several. Until the engine seals go bad from age, they don't use much oil. That happens around 80k in the 61's, 100 k in the 68-on's.

The real problem with the 68-ons is from corrosion in the electrical yoke, which makes the computer freak out and no mechanic around seems to be able to solve the problem.

They rarely overheat - unless you are a dolt who relies on idiot lights instead of checking the oil, which in an oil/air-cooled engine is the thing you should be doing regularly and add a half quart when it gets that low.

The best one I ever had was a 66 bus with 67 bug engine in it. Drove it out west and lived in the national forests along the way for 6 months back in 1975. Change the oil every 1,500, adjust the valves every 3,000 or so and nothing much else to do.

Udall's in trouble. A month ago it looked like a cakewalk, but now he's tied with Schaffer. Many reasons are given for this, but the real reason is the horribly-timed Democratic position on energy and COGCC "reforms."

Basically, Colorado Democrats thought this would be a swell year to run on a platform of imposing new taxes on oil and gas production, instituting draconian environmental restrictions on exploration and production, and vowing to combat the idea of opening up more of the outer continental shelf to exploration.

Never mind that gasoline and natural gas have gone through the roof and that the oil and gas industry makes up over 20% of Colorado's economy. And Udall's panicky flip-flopping on the issue has just made him look like an unprincipled stooge.

It wouldn't be surprising if he loses. That McCain is surging in Colorado polls also indicates that Obama's coattails will probably be non-existant. Oops.
