"Anyplace on the planet, when someone has a song that has a beat, they're on the floor dancing apart to the beat, and before Chubby Checker, it wasn't here, and I think that has a lot to do with me being on the charts," he said.

I was confused by "dancing apart to the beat" but Chubby explained it in an interview:

Dancing apart to the beat is when you look at someone and they look at you and you're doing something together, but you're not touching.

If that's so that's really a pretty huge development in dancing.

That's pretty much what The Twist is, though. You kinda have to stand apart while doing it or you'd be knocking each other over.

submitted this with a different headline expressing dismay over the fact that the Beatles were beaten out by both The Macarena and Olivia Newton-John.

To me this list sums up why the recording industry sucks and people have turned to pirating music rather than paying $20 for a CD with one good song on it.

After awhile, whenever I heard "Smooth" on the radio my right index finger would begin twitching. I could feel the serrated trigger of an H&K USP .45 under that finger, and see Rob Thomas' face as the Golden Saber entered just about the eyebrow.

I'd turn the gun on Carlos but, remembering the smoking coolness of Borboletta I'd forgive him his later transgressions. But I'd make him promise to go back to Latino funk and give up pop. Or I'd come back and kneecap him.

I like the dancing chick in the T-shirt in that video. It's all I remember about 'Smooth'. THAT was a development in dancing.

Chubby Checker is always first on my list when I think of great musical achievement of the last century, especially the remake he did with the Fat Boys on their self titled album.

I would have sworn Nickleback would have taken the top 4 spots of this list. Cause everyone loves Nickleback man!

FTFA: "My music is less played that any performer that has been a No. 1 chart man on the planet," said Checker, who also had hits with "Pony Time," "The Fly" and "Let's Twist Again," which earned him a Grammy. "I don't get the respect that Rod Stewart gets, or the Rolling Stones, or Frankie Valli. ... But I have to deal with it."

Go cry, emo Chubby...

I read an interview w/Carlos in Guitar World before Supernatural came out, where he talked about how he wanted to bring really positive, uplifting music to the masses because he didn't see much of that in the popular music world at the time. A lot of it was just dark and despairing and such. So he chose collaborators who would reach a popular audience while still staying true to his message. While some of these collaborations worked better than others, I know his heart was in the right place and so I don't fault him for any of it.

meh, so they would've paid $.99 for the same crappy single. The discontinuation of the single in the 90s is what killed the industry. But even then, fark you if you're knowingly buying disposable, novelty bullshiat and then crying about spending $20 bucks a CD. Sorry, you fail at having musical taste, thanks for playing, abort yourself from society.

billboard considers Nickelback to be rock

this list just lost all credibility in my eyes for that reason

FeedTheCollapse 2008-09-11 05:11:39 PM
oh, and I've never quite understood how Smooth became as big as it did. If it weren't for that odd Latino Explosion (where anyone remotely hispanic made it big despite being almost universally awful), I think most people had forgotten about Santana.

kanesays 2008-09-11 05:18:43 PM
I could actually sit through The Twist without a problem. That godawful Smooth song? No f*ckin way.

This is why the term "The Great Unwashed" caught on like it did, in essence.

I've always thought that "Smooth" was almost the same song as "Rainbow in the Dark"

Popular and Good are, sadly, nearly orthogonal concepts in music.

FTA: Initially, Billboard relied on stations to report the most popular songs, and got sales surveys from record stores. But Mayfield said stations often stopped reporting on a song's popularity if it was no longer a priority for record labels.

Is it just me or does this sound like a coded way of saying "Early chart standings subject to payola, so take article with a grain of salt"?

Lord Snoopy's G.P.E.H. 2008-09-11 08:08:20 PM
Chubby Checker's version of "The Twist" is an almost note-for-note, nuance-for-nuance Xerox copy of Hank Ballard's original. The only differnce is that Checker hadn't had a history of songs that couldn't be played on the radio.

AgentOrangeDrink 2008-09-11 08:33:11 PM
Chubby Checker released like 20 songs that were all variations on the Twist in a sad attempt to keep himself relevant. Chubby Checker is to Bo Diddley as Paris Hilton is to Monica Belluci.

Lord Snoopy's G.P.E.H. 2008-09-11 08:35:44 PM
And his name's a ripoff of Fats Domino's. Which means he's earned the same respect as Rod Stewart in my book. And I mean the Rod Stewart who replaced the one who'd made "Never A Dull Moment."

There were a zillion bad Twist songs on the radio way back in the day. The most egregiously foul cash-in on the craze was "The Twisting Rose of Texas," sung to the tune of ... well, you can guess. How far we have come. Maybe.

Zombie Hitler 2008-09-12 01:27:00 AM
There is a level of Hell where "Smooth" and "This is our country" play back to back on infinite loop.

OMFG. i HATE that song!
grrrr... damn you.
it's possibly one of the worst pop/rock songs of the past 3 years, IMHO.

I admit, it does have some good guitar licks in it, tho.

"It's the only song that was ever No. 1 in two different chart runs," he said.

I could swear that "Bohemian Rhapsody" hit #1 again after Freddy Mercury died.

1963, 12 years old, twisting to Chubby with my girlfriend at her Halloween party, first time I ever got boobies (small but nice) rubbed on me. Haven't been the same since.
