Ziggy Stardust, really? I haven't listened to that for many years, but I don't remember anything gay about it.

I'm with you... not that I have anything wrong with gay people, but I think Bowie may have been adopted by the gay community in this one.

Did Ziggy lay the ground work for "glam rock?" yes. Is it "gay?" I don't think so.

The Smiths by The Smiths? Maybe. But still the best album ever recorded.

BravadoGT: No Pet Shop Boys?

Was wondering the same thing.

Some very good records on that list, but "Ziggy Stardust" is one of the all-time greats.

I own that. I like that. Please send me a woman so I can reaffirm my heterosexuality.

Oh jeez. About 25% of my iTunes collection is gay in some form. Whether it be Erasure, FGTH, and this band called 'Divine' among others. I don't care about the sexual orientation of entertainers, if I like the sound it's in the collection.

I think it's less of a case that the albums are "gay", but that these are the most loved albums by the gay audience of Out Magazine.

/I own three of the top 10 albums. Bowie, Elton, & Lauper
//also own every Queen album not featuring Paul Rodgers.

I never saw PSB as a "gay" act. Erasure, yes. Erasure was flamboyant and fabulous. PSB was more eloquent and debonair.

Well, ok, I guess they were pretty gay then.

I know Bell and Tennant are both gay, but have Clarke and Lowe ever said if they are?

At one time, I owned eight out of the ten listed. No Garland, and I have no idea what Anthony + the Johnsons is, but I never owned it.

You might have a case for Frankie Goes to Hollywood, but not Tears for Fears or Fine Young Cannibals.

FYC were destroyed by the radio playing that damn "She Drives Me Crazy" nonstop. The rest of their work is pretty soulful and damn good. FYC are a band that most people dismiss as a one hit wonder, but like bands such as Big Country it's an incredibly false notion.

This drag queen I used to work with was a huge fan of Stevie Nicks, and led me to believe many gays are similarly fond of her music. Yet, I find no Stevie Nicks, nor any Fleetwood Mac on the list.

Where's Of Montreal's "The Gay Parade"? Actually I don't know if that one is very gay or not, but judging from the other stuff I've heard by Of Montreal, I wouldn't be surprised. Their lead singer seems to rival Prince and David Bowie in being androgynous.

Also, Ziggy Stardust is awesome, and on a record it has one of the strongest sides (A) of any album I've ever heard.

/Moonage Daydream FTW

Weigard 2008-09-10 12:19:22 AM
No Depeche Mode? Seriously? Speak and Spell is pretty gay.

I've heard a few songs from Of Montreal, and so far all of them have been cool and catchy as hell. good stuff.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-09-10 12:35:13 AM
wait just a darned minute now....

The Smiths are on this list? TWICE?

Is Morrissey straight, bi, or gay? or does he not put a label on his sexuality? I've heard conflicting things.
Can anybody tell me the real answer?

/has "Louder than Bombs" cd... it's pretty good.. but where's "there is a light that never goes out" ?? i mean COME ON!

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-09-10 12:36:04 AM
oh.. and one more thing

why is there no QUEEN on that list?!

Third_Uncle_Eno: oh.. and one more thing

To be fair, Queen had possibly the gayest and most flamboyant frontment ever with Freddie Mercury. But their albums and songs were rarely about gay topics. And songs like Fat Bottom Girls, Bohemian Rhapsody and Now I'm Here and are hardly 'gay' tunes by any stretch.

Although their very best songs, like Don't Stop Me Now, Keep Yourself Alive, and Save Me, could probably be seen as having gay overtones, it still pales to the fact those songs kicked major ass.

Ignorant McNugget 2008-09-10 02:19:34 AM
Kevin Gilbert's "The Shaming of the True" contains more explicit references to homo sex than possibly any other prog-rock record ever made.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-09-10 02:30:28 AM
sonnyboy11

i wasn't talking about whether their tunes were 'gay' or not... or had any over or undertones...

i was talking about the listening / concert going audience.

just like what the article was supposedly doing.

[i mean that's the only way to justify putting "ziggy stardust" as an album on that list....... i mean the main thing was to put bowie... cuz of the supposed 'gayness' of some of his listening audience?... and they had to put SOME album, so they put "ziggy" for some reason]

i mean putting Madonna or Cher i can see [big gay audiences there.... supposedly]... but BOWIE?

/ gay queen lyrics? how about "i wanna make a supersonic *man* outta you" ?

Jamdug!: Stephin Merritt & Magnetic Fields tend to disagree

True.

(Secretly I think Merritt is a better song writer than Morrissey)

But really? Ziggy? I never thought of that album in such a context. I just thought it was a great rock n' roll record.
